Campgrounds and RV parks near Havana, IL

Wildlife viewing anchors most trips. Chautauqua National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1936 to provide sanctuary for the millions of birds that migrate along the Illinois River and has been designated an Important Bird Area, accepted into the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network, and recognized as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. The refuge sits about eight miles north of Havana and includes a rare 100-foot observation tower. Sand Ridge State Forest provides miles of hiking, backpacking, and horseback-riding trails, plus a hand trap shooting facility and an archery range. Families staying at Evening Star Camping Resort can use pool, playground, and lawn-game amenities on site. The Dickson Mounds Museum, a short drive across the river, covers regional Native American history and works well as a rainy-day stop.

Camping season in the Havana area runs primarily April through October, with most private parks following that window. Sand Ridge State Forest sites stay open year-round, though winter facilities are limited and vault toilets are the standard at Pine Camp. Spring brings warming temperatures, wildflowers, and strong shorebird migration through the refuges, but river bottoms can flood after heavy rain. Summer is peak family season, with warm humid nights, active campground programming, and full hookups in high demand. Ticks are common in the summer months, so plan on repellent and long pants for trail time. Fall delivers cooler nights, fewer bugs, and heavy waterfowl movement along the Illinois River. Winter is quiet, with eagles abundant in the Illinois River Valley each winter and the Fulton-Mason Eagle Day event held the first Saturday in February, drawing day-trippers even when overnight camping slows. Portions of Chautauqua refuge close October 16 through January 31 as a waterfowl sanctuary.

Expect a mix of developed private resorts and rustic public sites. Evening Star Camping Resort offers pull-thrus, hookup sites, showers, laundry, and a dump station, making it the easiest fit for larger rigs. Pine Camp - Sand Ridge State Forest offers 24 RV-suitable sites with fire pads, picnic tables, water spigots, and vault toilets, but no water, electric, or sewage hookups, so plan on dry camping. A sanitary dump station is available across the road from the campground. Roads into Sand Ridge are paved to the main campgrounds but narrow, and the forest is not big-rig friendly, with most sites suited to Class B, small Class C, and trailers under about 22 feet. The state forest is pet-friendly, but dogs must be on a leash and under supervision at all times. Stock up on groceries and fuel in Havana before heading to the more remote sites.
