Campgrounds and RV parks near Hawthorn Woods, IL

Hawthorn Woods sits in central Lake County, Illinois, roughly an hour northwest of downtown Chicago and within easy driving distance of the Chain O' Lakes region, the Fox River corridor, and the Lake Michigan shoreline. RV renters use the village as a launch point for weekend trips into some of the densest concentrations of lakes and state-managed campgrounds in northern Illinois. The closest full-service private option is Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in Volo, a family-oriented park on the shores of Fish Lake with full hookup RV sites, tent sites, and cabins. Grass Lake Marina and RV Park and Fox River Recreation add water-access options along the Chain O' Lakes and the Fox River. For state-run camping, Turner Lake South at Chain O' Lakes State Park offers Class B Premium sites near the water, and Illinois Beach State Park runs a large Class A Premium campground on Lake Michigan south of the Wisconsin line. Between these, renters can choose resort-style amenities, no-frills state park loops, or waterfront sites tied to boating and fishing.

State park sites and private resorts use separate systems, so plan on booking each destination directly. Camping reservations for Chain O' Lakes State Park, including Turner Lake South and the other loops inside the park, are accepted through ExploreMoreIL. Reservations at Illinois Beach State Park can be made up to 180 days in advance at ExploreMoreIL, and reservations are only accepted from May 1 through September 30, with walk-in camping outside that window. Private parks book on their own platforms. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort takes overnight reservations online or by phone. Grass Lake Marina and RV Park, Fox River Recreation, and other Chain O' Lakes area properties should be booked directly with the operator. For peak summer dates, target reservations several weeks out at private resorts and several months out for lakefront state park loops.
