Campgrounds and RV parks near Herscher, IL

Kankakee River State Park is the main draw. Activities include biking, hiking, equestrian trails, canoeing, fishing, and geocaching, along with an archery range, metal detecting, snowmobile trails, cross-country skiing, and hunting. A 3-mile route along Rock Creek takes hikers past limestone canyons and a waterfall, and a bicycle trail begins at Davis Creek Area and travels 10.5 miles along the river. Anglers target bass, channel cats, walleye, and northern pike, and canoeists favour the shallow, gentle river. Families staying at Kankakee South KOA Holiday find a pool, playground, basketball and volleyball courts, and a game room. Race fans can time visits to events at Chicagoland Speedway, and Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort adds adult-oriented dining and gaming close to Joliet.

The Kankakee area is a full four-season destination, but RV camping windows vary sharply by property. Potowatomi - Kankakee River State Park is typically open in the warm-weather months, with campsite reservations available up to 180 days in advance through ExploreMoreIL. Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort also runs seasonally, typically from mid-April to mid-October, and campers must be at least 21 years of age. Late spring through early fall is peak season. Weekends in May, June, and July fill quickly at Potowatomi and Kankakee South KOA Holiday, and family holiday weekends see the earliest sellouts. Halloween-themed weekends at the KOA are a long-standing tradition and book far in advance. Winter narrows the choices considerably. The state park stays open for day use, and in mid-January when hunting season ends and there is snow cover of 4 inches or more, the park is open from sunrise to sunset for snowmobiling. Overnight RV options in the immediate area are limited during the coldest months.

Sites at Kankakee River State Park are basic but well kept. Potowatomi Campground has 110 Class A sites across four loops, each with electric hookups, a picnic table, and a campgrill, plus hot showers, a dump station, and water taps available within the campground. Sites accommodate RVs 35 feet long or smaller, so bigger rigs should look elsewhere. Campgrounds close at 10 p.m. and observe quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. with no vehicular traffic allowed during this time, and alcohol is prohibited. Pets are welcome on leash. Private parks offer more amenities. Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort provides electric and water at sites with a shared dump station rather than in-site sewer, along with clean shower and restroom facilities. Expect some road and rail noise there, and a more resort-style feel at the KOA.
