Camping near Homewood, Illinois
Homewood is a south-suburban village in Cook County, roughly 25 miles south of downtown Chicago and a short drive from the Indiana state line. RV travelers using Homewood as a base can reach a mix of private RV parks, Illinois state park campgrounds, and Lake Michigan lakeshore parks in northwest Indiana within an easy day's driving radius.
The closest options tend to be private parks. Emerald Trails Campground and Pingala RV Resort sit within reasonable driving range and cater to travelers who want hookups and standard amenities. Farther east across the Indiana border, Cedar Lake Ministries RV Park, Cedar Lake Bible Retreat and RV Park, and Enchanted Shores add lakeside and faith-based camping choices around Cedar Lake, Indiana.
For public land camping, travelers generally head south into the Illinois state park system, which encompasses over 60 parks and about the same number of recreational and wildlife areas, or east to Indiana Dunes National Park along the Lake Michigan shore.
Things to do around Homewood
Homewood itself offers a walkable downtown, a Metra Electric station with direct service to Chicago, and easy access to south-suburban forest preserves in Cook and Will counties. Travelers can day-trip into Chicago for museums, Lake Michigan beaches, and Millennium Park without moving the RV.
Outdoor draws sit within an hour or two. Indiana Dunes National Park protects a long stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline in northwest Indiana, with beaches, dunes, wetlands, and forest trails. Cedar Lake in northwest Indiana adds boating, fishing, and swimming close to several of the private parks on the campground list, and Indiana Dunes State Park sits adjacent to the national park with additional beach access.

The Homewood area follows a classic Upper Midwest pattern. Summers are warm, humid, and wet, and winters are cold, snowy, and windy, with variable shoulder seasons in spring and fall. Peak RV season runs from Memorial Day through mid-October, with the strongest demand between mid-June and Labor Day.
Most Illinois state park campsites operate on a defined booking season. Most campsites may be reserved from May 1 through October 31, and some parks accept reservations year-round, so check the specific site on the ExploreMoreIL website before planning a shoulder-season trip. In Indiana, Dunewood Campground at Indiana Dunes National Park is open April through October on a reservation system through Recreation.gov.
Private parks in the area often extend their season into late fall and sometimes offer limited winter camping, but water hookups are commonly winterized once overnight lows drop below freezing. Confirm hookup availability with the campground before booking a cold-weather trip.

How to book a site
For Illinois state parks, reservations run through the state's official platform. On-line reservations for Illinois Department of Natural Resources-hosted camping, cabins, group camps, and shelters are made through the ExploreMoreIL website, and IDNR no longer takes camping and shelter reservations by mail or phone. Campsites can be reserved for a maximum of 14 nights within a 30-day period, and reservations must be made three days before the campsite is needed.
Indiana state parks and Indiana Dunes National Park use separate systems. State park sites book through Reserve America, while the seasonal reservation window for Dunewood opens November 15 for the following April 1 campground opening, and sites become available on a rolling 6-month window after that.
Private parks such as Emerald Trails Campground, Pingala RV Resort, Enchanted Shores, Cedar Lake Ministries RV Park, and Cedar Lake Bible Retreat and RV Park generally take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Book summer weekends well in advance.
What to expect on the ground
Private parks near Homewood typically offer full or partial hookups, dump stations, and restrooms with showers, with Wi-Fi of varying quality. Sites at Cedar Lake Ministries RV Park and Cedar Lake Bible Retreat and RV Park have a faith-based community focus with quiet hours and family programming, while Emerald Trails Campground, Enchanted Shores, and Pingala RV Resort lean more traditional-recreational.
At Indiana Dunes' Dunewood Campground, expect a more rustic setup. The park offers camping at Dunewood Campground, which has 66 campsites: 54 drive-in and 12 walk-in, with no sites offering electric or water hookups, though each site has a picnic table, grill, and fire ring. Some sites are length-limited for RVs, so read each campsite description carefully before booking a larger rig.
Biting insects are active from late spring through early fall, and thunderstorms can be intense in summer. Pack accordingly and monitor local weather advisories on travel days.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Homewood, IL?
RV rental in Homewood, IL is affordable compared to renting in downtown Chicago, with options for every budget. On RVezy, towable trailers near Homewood typically range from about $100 to $150 per night, while motorhomes generally range from about $175 to $250 per night depending on class, age, and season. Many hosts offer discounts of 10 to 20 percent for weekly or monthly bookings, which is great for a longer Midwest road trip. To score a cheap RV rental Homewood travelers love, book midweek, travel in May or September just outside peak summer demand, and use the price filter to sort by lowest nightly rate. Pro tip: south suburban listings often cost less than Loop-adjacent Chicago rentals while still being about 25 miles from Millennium Park.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Homewood,%20IllinoisDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Homewood, IL?
Good news: for most RVs you will rent on RVezy in Homewood, a regular driver's license is all you need. RVezy generally requires renters to be 25 or older with a valid license, and identification is verified right through the platform. Illinois ties license class to vehicle weight for in-state registrations, but the vast majority of campervans, Class C motorhomes, and travel trailers listed near Homewood fall well under the 16,000-pound threshold that would require a higher class. Out-of-state and international visitors can drive under their home jurisdiction's license. International guests should bring an International Driving Permit, usually under $20 from your local auto association, and you are road-ready.

You can book with confidence because RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy for every reservation. There is a money-back grace period shortly after booking, plus protections that take real-world events like natural disasters into account, which matters in the Midwest where severe thunderstorms and winter storms can pop up. Because refund amounts depend on how far out you cancel and the circumstances, the easiest move is to review the policy details at the RVezy checkout page before confirming. Pro tip: if Chicago-area weather looks dicey, message RVezy support early. The support team is available before, during, and after every trip.

fpdcc.com/places/campgrounds/When is the best time to rent an RV in Homewood, IL?

Pro tip: complete the pre-trip and post-trip walkthrough with the host and take date-stamped photos of the interior and exterior. It is the single best way to avoid any deposit disputes on your Homewood rental.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I prep a Homewood RV for cold-weather or shoulder-season trips?
Cool-weather camping near Homewood is genuinely fun if you are prepped, fall foliage in the Cook County Forest Preserves and quiet shoulder-season sites at Indiana Dunes are hard to beat. Look for RVs listed with a working furnace, heated holding tanks, and dual-pane windows, all common on Class C and newer travel-trailer listings near Homewood. Book a campground with a 30- or 50-amp electric hookup so you can run the heater overnight without worrying about the battery, and ask the host to top off propane before pickup. Pro tip: October nights here can drop into the 30s°F, so pack a sleeping bag rated to around 20°F as a backup, and confirm with your host that water lines are ready for shoulder-season use before your trip.
