Campgrounds and RV parks near Illiopolis, IL

Water recreation drives most trips. Sangchris Lake covers about 2,164 acres with roughly 18 miles of shoreline, and the lake was built as a power-station cooling lake, which keeps water temperatures moderate. The lake has multiple boat launches, and fishing focuses on bass, bluegill, crappie, and catfish. Swimming is not permitted in the lake. On land, Sangchris offers a public archery range at the Maple Flats area, a seasonal dog-training area, and quiet paved loops good for kids on bikes. At Weldon Springs, fishing, boating, hiking, and picnicking are the main warm-season activities, while sledding, tobogganing, ice fishing, and cross-country skiing take over in winter. Springfield is about a half-hour west and offers the Lincoln Home National Historic Site, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, and the Old State Capitol for a rain-day break from the campground.

The camping calendar is shaped by state-park schedules. At Sangchris Lake State Park, Hickory Point and Deer Run are technically open year-round, but water facilities and the shower building close from the Monday before Thanksgiving through March 31, and the cabins close November 1 through March 31. Weldon Springs runs on a slightly different rhythm: the campground stays open year-round with 75 electric sites, a dump station, cooking grills, and shower and toilet facilities, though water service is seasonal. Summer is peak season. Reservations should be made well in advance for holiday weekends and summer months, as campgrounds can fill quickly. Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day typically book to capacity, and those weekends carry a two-night minimum through the state system. Spring can be muddy and buggy near creeks. Primitive backpack campsites along Salt Creek at Weldon Springs can flood in spring, so calling ahead for conditions is wise. Fall brings comfortable temperatures, fewer insects, and open sites midweek.

State-park loops in this part of Illinois are wooded, gravel-surfaced, and generally quiet. At Sangchris Lake State Park, Deer Run contains Class A sites with electricity, Class B/S sites, and Class C walk-in tent sites, but the shower building is located over at Hickory Point Campground, so Deer Run guests may need to walk or drive across the lake to shower. A dump station is provided in each campground. At Weldon Springs, sites accept RVs up to 60 feet, and amenities include 30 and 50-amp electric service, a dump station, showers, a playground, and a fishing area. Cell coverage is generally usable on major carriers, though it varies by loop. Pets are allowed at both state parks on leash. Expect mosquitoes in June and July near water, and pack for humidity.
