Campgrounds and RV parks near Indian Creek, IL

Water recreation defines most trips in this area. Chain O Lakes State Park sits in Illinois' largest concentration of natural lakes and offers boating, fishing, and paddling, with seasonal rentals through the park concessionaire. Anglers pursue bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, muskie, northern pike, bullhead, catfish, and yellow and white bass across the chain. On the Lake Michigan side, Illinois Beach State Park stretches roughly 6.5 miles along the shoreline with swimming beaches, dune and swale trails, and a visitor center. The park covers about 4,160 acres split into North and South units. On land, Chain O Lakes State Park has seven picnic areas, roughly 8 miles of equestrian trail, and a 6-mile biking and hiking trail. Volo Bog State Natural Area and the Volo Auto Museum are nearby for a change of pace.

The main RV season in Lake County runs roughly from mid-April through October. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort operates overnight camping from May 1 through October 15, with seasonal sites open from mid-April. Illinois Beach State Park accepts campground reservations only for stays between May 1 and September 30, though limited first-come, first-served sites can extend the shoulder season. Summer is peak, with Lake Michigan beaches and the Chain O'Lakes drawing heavy weekend traffic from Chicago and southern Wisconsin. Illinois Beach specifically flags high use on summer weekends and recommends booking ahead. Late spring and early fall are quieter, with milder temperatures and fewer crowds, though winds off the lake can stay cool into May. Winter shuts down most camping. Illinois Beach State Park's campground is closed January through March, and day-use activities at Chain O Lakes shift to ice fishing, ice skating, and cross-country skiing when conditions allow. Chain O Lakes also closes the entire park on scheduled hunting days beginning the last weekend in October.

State park sites in this area are Class A Premium or Class B Premium: electric hookups are common at Class A, but individual water and sewer hookups are not provided at the site. Illinois Beach State Park, for example, has 241 Class A Premium sites with electricity, showers, and sanitary facilities, plus a dump station near the campground rather than site-level water and sewer. Private resorts fill the full-hookup gap. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort offers full-hookup RV sites with electric, water, and sewer, plus a heated pool, sandy beach, boat rentals, and a season-long activity calendar aimed at families. Grass Lake Marina and RV Park caters to boaters with direct access to the chain. Expect mosquitoes and biting flies in marshy areas during warm months, occasional blue-green algae advisories on some lakes in late summer, and firewood rules at state parks that ask campers to buy on site or bring wood from approved sources.
