Campgrounds and RV parks near Itasca, IL

The Chain O' Lakes, a connected system of lakes and the Fox River, dominates outdoor recreation north of Itasca. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort sits on an 80-acre lake in Volo with a sandy beach, floating piers, and rentals for pedal boats, kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards. Grass Lake Marina and RV Park gives boaters direct launch access to the Chain O' Lakes waterways. On Lake Michigan, Illinois Beach State Park stretches 6.5 miles along the sandy shore in northern Illinois, with swimming beaches, hiking trails, and access to the Zion Bike Trail. The park protects the state's only remaining beach ridge shoreline and records more than 650 plant species in the dunes area. Closer to Itasca, families use campgrounds as a base for day trips to Chicago museums, the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, the Volo Auto Museum, and Six Flags Great America in Gurnee.

Northern Illinois has a short, defined camping season. Most private resorts and the campground at Illinois Beach open in spring and close by mid-October. The state park campground at Adeline Jay Geo-Karis Illinois Beach is closed from January through March, with reservations available for stays from May 1 through late September. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort runs overnight camping from May 1 through October 15, with seasonal sites starting April 15, which is typical of the private lakeside parks in Lake County. Peak demand runs Memorial Day through Labor Day, and weekend sites in the Chain O' Lakes and along Lake Michigan often book weeks in advance. July and August are the busiest months at Illinois Beach State Park, so reservations should be made as early as possible. Late spring and early fall offer cooler temperatures, thinner crowds, and easier availability. Winter camping options are limited. Private resorts drain water lines and shut down, and the state park campground closes for the coldest months. RV travelers targeting the shoulder months should confirm hookup availability, since water service is often shut off before the official closing date.

Sites near Itasca skew toward developed, family-oriented resorts rather than backcountry camping. Private parks in the Chain O' Lakes region typically offer full hookups, gravel pads, laundry, pools, and organized weekend activities. Fish Lake Beach features a heated pool, kiddie pool, hot tub, playgrounds, a leash-free dog park, clean bathhouses, a convenience store, laundry, and golf cart rentals, with pull-through options for larger rigs. State park expectations are different. The southern-unit campground at Illinois Beach provides Class A Premium sites with electricity and access to showers and sanitary facilities. Sites do not have individual water or sewer hookups, but a dump station is available on site. Mosquitoes are common near the lakes in summer, cell coverage is generally strong across the region, and shade varies widely by site at both the state park and private resorts.
