Campgrounds and RV parks near Kankakee, IL

Kankakee sits about an hour south of Chicago in northeastern Illinois, with the Kankakee River defining the area's outdoor recreation. RV renters use the city as a base for weekend trips centered on the river corridor, state park land, and easy access from I-57. The headline destination is Kankakee River State Park, which envelops both sides of the Kankakee River for 11 miles in an area 6 miles northwest of Kankakee and covers approximately 4,000 acres. Potowatomi - Kankakee River State Park, one of two campgrounds inside the park, offers wooded Class A sites with electric hookups. Kankakee South KOA Holiday provides full-service RV infrastructure closer to town, while Enchanted Shores and Martin Campground round out smaller, quieter private options in the surrounding countryside. Renters heading north toward Joliet can also stage trips from Chicagoland Speedway/Lakeside Campgrounds, which pairs standard sites with proximity to the racetrack. Between the state park and the private grounds, the Kankakee area covers most RV needs: hookups, dump stations, river access, and quick highway routes back to the city.

State-park sites use the Illinois Department of Natural Resources system. Camping reservations are available online at ExploreMoreIL, and bookings for Potawatomi Campground go through that portal. Book as early as the six-month window allows for summer weekends. Private options book directly. Kankakee South KOA Holiday reserves through the KOA website or app, and Chicagoland Speedway/Lakeside Campgrounds, Enchanted Shores, and Martin Campground each handle bookings through their own websites or by phone. Race weekends near the speedway can sell out months ahead. The state park campground typically does not accept same-day or day-before reservations. Walk-in camping is the option for last-minute stays, subject to availability, so plan to arrive during posted office hours if walking in.
