Camping near Kansas, Illinois
Kansas is a small village in Edgar County, in east-central Illinois. The surrounding countryside is flat farmland cut by the Embarras River and its wooded ridges, and the area sits between Interstate 70 to the south and Interstate 57 to the west. RV travelers typically use Kansas as a base to reach a cluster of state and county parks within a 30 to 45 minute drive.
The closest full-service RV campground is Mill Creek Park near Marshall, a Clark County park with 139 electric sites, shower facilities and a large lake. State-park options within easy reach include Walnut Point State Park in Douglas County, a 671-acre park built around 59-acre Walnut Point Lake, Fox Ridge State Park south of Charleston, a 2,064-acre park known for wooded ridges and hiking trails along the Embarras River, and Lincoln Trail State Park south of Marshall, a 1,023-acre park with a 146-acre lake for boating and fishing.
For RVers who prefer a private park with pull-through sites and hookups close to the interstate, Casey KOA sits just off I-70 in Casey.
Things to do near Kansas
Fishing and paddling dominate the local park lakes. Lincoln Trail Lake allows outboard motors up to 10 horsepower and holds largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, crappie and channel catfish, while Walnut Point Lake restricts boats to electric trolling motors only, keeping the water quiet for kayaks and canoes. Mill Creek Lake is much larger and is open to water skiing and powerboats.
Hikers head to Fox Ridge for terrain that stands out in this part of Illinois. The park has about eight miles of connected trails through steep ravines above the Embarras River, with wooden bridges, rest benches, and a long staircase up to the Eagle's Nest overlook.
Families with kids often build a day around Casey itself, home to a well-known collection of oversized roadside attractions certified by Guinness World Records, including the world's largest wind chime, rocking chair, mailbox, and golf tee.

The RV season in this part of Illinois runs roughly April through October. Mill Creek Park operates its camping season from April 1 through October 31, with slight adjustments for weather. State-park shower buildings follow a similar pattern: at Lincoln Trail and Walnut Point, shower buildings close by November 1 and reopen May 1, weather depending, and Fox Ridge runs on the same schedule.
Spring brings wildflowers and green ridges but also the wettest weather. Summer is warm, humid and busy, with weekends and holidays filling first. Fall is often the best window for RV travel, with cooler nights, drier campsites, and hardwood color across Fox Ridge and Lincoln Trail.
Winter camping is limited. Walnut Point's campground closes during the cold months, and while Fox Ridge and Lincoln Trail technically remain open year-round, showers and most services are shut down until spring. Mill Creek's cabins stay available for cold-weather trips.

How to book a site
Illinois state parks use a single online system. Reservations for Fox Ridge, Walnut Point, Lincoln Trail and other IDNR sites are handled through the ExploreMoreIL platform. All campers must obtain a camping permit before occupying a site, which is done at the park office or self-registration station on arrival.
Mill Creek Park is a county park and books separately through the Clark County Park District. Reservations may be made in advance or upon arrival, with a deposit and credit card on file required for advance bookings and a signed lease at check-in.
Casey KOA books through the KOA website or by phone. Summer weekends and holiday weeks fill quickly at the state-park loops, so reserving several weeks ahead is recommended for July and August stays.
What to expect on-site
Most sites in this area are electric-only with shared water spigots and a central dump station rather than full hookups. Fox Ridge offers 43 sites with electricity at each site, a shower building, shared water and a dump station. Walnut Point provides 34 Class A electric sites with 30 and 50-amp connections, close to a shower building with flush toilets. Lincoln Trail's Lakeside Campground has 120 sites including 100 Class A electric and 20 tent-only, each with a gravel spur, table, fire ring and grill.
Sites at Fox Ridge are wooded and almost entirely back-in, so plan for maneuvering room. Casey KOA is more open and has long pull-through sites suitable for large rigs. Cell coverage can be spotty deep in Fox Ridge's ravines. Firewood is sold at park concessions and should not be brought in from outside the region.
