Campgrounds and RV parks near Kenilworth, IL

Kenilworth sits on Chicago's North Shore along Lake Michigan, roughly 20 miles north of downtown Chicago. The village itself is residential and does not host campgrounds, so RV travelers base their trips at parks in northern Lake County and the Chain O' Lakes region, most within a 45 to 60 minute drive. The closest developed options include Pingala RV Resort and, farther north near the Wisconsin line, Illinois Beach State Park, which stretches 6.5 miles along the shores of Lake Michigan and covers roughly 4,160 acres across a North Unit and South Unit. To the northwest, the Fox River and Chain O' Lakes waterways anchor Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort, Grass Lake Marina and RV Park, and Turner Lake South within Chain O' Lakes State Park. This area mixes state-park camping with privately run resort-style parks. State-park sites lean toward electric or primitive loops in natural settings, while the private resorts add pools, beaches, and family programming. Many RV travelers use Kenilworth as an easy gateway to Chicago attractions while sleeping at a quieter lakeside site to the north.

Illinois state parks use a single reservation portal. Reservations can be made up to 180 days in advance at ExploreMoreIL, and are accepted for stays from May 1 through September 30. This covers both Illinois Beach State Park and Turner Lake South at Chain O' Lakes State Park. Outside that window, sites at both parks are first-come, first-served, and campers must have a camping unit with them at check-in. Private resorts book directly. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort, Grass Lake Marina and RV Park, and Pingala RV Resort each take reservations through their own websites or by phone, and seasonal-site demand is highest between April and June. For summer holiday weekends, plan to book state-park sites as soon as the 180-day window opens, and reserve waterfront private sites even earlier.
