Campgrounds and RV parks near Knollwood, IL

Knollwood is an unincorporated community in Lake County, Illinois, roughly halfway between Waukegan and the Chain O' Lakes region. RV travelers use it as a base for reaching Lake Michigan shoreline camping to the east and the interconnected lakes and marshes to the northwest, both within a short drive of the community. The closest large public campground is Illinois Beach State Park, which stretches along Lake Michigan and offers Class A Premium electric sites managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Inland, Chain O' Lakes State Park sits at the heart of a large connected waterway, with Turner Lake South among its camping loops. Private options in the area include Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in Volo, Grass Lake Marina and RV Park, and Fox River Recreation. Expect a mix of state-run electric sites without individual water or sewer hookups and private resorts offering full-hookup pads, cabins, and seasonal amenities. Most public campgrounds close for the winter, while private resorts generally operate spring through mid-fall.

Illinois state park campgrounds, including Illinois Beach State Park and Chain O' Lakes State Park (Honeysuckle Hollow, Fox Den, Turner Lake South, Prairie View, and Mud Lake East), are reserved through the ExploreMoreIL system. Reservations can be made up to six months in advance and no later than three days before arrival, with a non-refundable reservation fee plus the full camping fee due at booking. Any sites not reserved remain first-come, first-served but often fill by early Friday on summer weekends. A responsible adult of 18 or older must acquire the permit and have a camping unit on site at registration. The maximum stay at Chain O' Lakes is 14 nights within a 30-day period. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort takes reservations directly. Private parks such as Grass Lake Marina and RV Park and Fox River Recreation handle their own bookings, so contact them directly for availability.
