Campgrounds and RV parks near Lake Catherine, IL

Lake Catherine sits at the northeastern end of the Fox Chain O'Lakes, a nine-lake system in Lake County that connects to the Fox River and stretches into McHenry County. The community is roughly 50 miles northwest of Chicago and about 20 miles southwest of Kenosha, Wisconsin, making it a common weekend destination for RV travelers from both metro areas. The Fox Chain O'Lakes is rated one of the busiest inland recreational waterways in the country, with an estimated 60,000 to 100,000 people on the water on peak weekends. Because Lake Catherine itself has limited public shoreline access, most RV camping happens at nearby parks along the wider Chain or the Fox River. Options within a short drive include Grass Lake Marina and RV Park, Fox River Recreation, Turner Lake South - Chain O Lakes State Park, and Happy Acres Kampground. Just across the Wisconsin state line, the Kenosha County Fair Association grounds also host RV camping, primarily tied to events. Together these give travelers a mix of state-park sites, private full-service parks, and lake-access marinas.

State-park sites at Chain O' Lakes, including Turner Lake South, are reserved through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources ExploreMoreIL system online, or by phone at 866-716-6550. Reservations can be made up to 180 days in advance and must be placed at least three days before arrival. The maximum stay is 14 nights within any 30-day period, and a responsible adult 18 or older must have a camp shelter set up at the time of registration. Private options like Grass Lake Marina and RV Park, Fox River Recreation, and Happy Acres Kampground book directly with the operator. The Kenosha County Fair Association typically opens RV camping around scheduled events, so confirm dates before planning a stop. For summer and holiday weekends, book at the 180-day mark for the best selection.
