Campgrounds near Lake Forest
Lake Forest sits on Chicago's North Shore, roughly midway between downtown Chicago and the Wisconsin state line. RV travelers use it as a jumping-off point for two very different camping regions: the Lake Michigan shoreline to the east and the Chain O' Lakes region to the northwest.
On the lakeshore, Adeline Jay Geo-Karis Illinois Beach State Park stretches along Lake Michigan north of Waukegan to the state line. Its South Unit campground offers 241 Class A Premium sites with electricity, showers, sanitary facilities, and a dump station. Inland, Chain O' Lakes State Park borders Grass, Marie, and Nippersink lakes and the Fox River, with Turner Lake South - Chain O Lakes State Park providing Class B Premium sites near the park's 44-acre interior lake.
Private options round out the picture. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in Volo offers full-hookup RV sites, cabins, and lakefront tent sites on Fish Lake, while Grass Lake Marina and RV Park and Pingala RV Resort serve travelers looking for waterfront or hookup-focused stays closer to the Chain O' Lakes waterway.
Things to do near Lake Forest
Water-based recreation dominates the area. The Chain O' Lakes waterway draws boaters, anglers, and paddlers for bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, muskie, northern pike, and catfish. Illinois Beach State Park offers 6.5 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline for swimming, sunbathing, and birding across dune, marsh, and forest habitats, along with hiking trails and the Zion Bike Trail connecting the North and South units.
Chain O' Lakes State Park adds four trail systems, including the 2.25-mile Nature's Way hiking trail, seven picnic areas, plus 8 miles of equestrian trail and a 6-mile biking and hiking trail. Seasonal boat and canoe rentals are available through an on-site concessionaire. Families based at Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort can use the heated pool, hot tub, sandy beach, playgrounds, and pickleball courts on site.

The main state park campground at Illinois Beach is open from April 1 through November 15, with the campground closed roughly January through March. Summer weekends see the heaviest use, and reservations are recommended from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Private resorts run a similar arc: Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort operates from May 1 through October 15.
Spring brings mild days, chilly winds off the lake, and lighter traffic before schools break. Summer is the peak season for swimming, boating, and thunderstorms, and sites at both Illinois Beach and Chain O' Lakes fill quickly for holiday weekends. Early fall offers cooler nights, fall color along the Fox River, and easier reservations.
Winter changes the picture entirely. Chain O' Lakes State Park shifts to winter hours the last weekend of October, when the park closes for scheduled hunting programs and daily operating hours contract to 8 a.m. until sunset. Once the ice thickens, ice fishing on Turner Lake and the Chain O' Lakes, ice skating, sledding, and cross-country skiing on the horse trail, bike trails, and Nature's Way trail become the main draws.

Very very helpful to have a sizable fridge and freezer. Microwave a big plus. Solar panels and Shore Power allowed us to use comfy air-connditioning. Thanks.

Bogdan is an incredible host. He patiently explained everything about the RV, was reachable and helpful when I needed some advice. Camper is well kept and is a labor of love. We really enjoyed the experience.

Booking and reservations
Illinois state park campgrounds, including Illinois Beach State Park and Turner Lake South - Chain O Lakes State Park, are reserved through the ExploreMoreIL system. Reservations open up to 180 days in advance and are only accepted for stays between May 1 and September 30. Outside that window, sites are held for first-come, first-served use. Chain O' Lakes reservations can also be made by phone at 866-716-6550, and youth group sites must be booked directly through the park office.
Private parks manage their own systems. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort, Grass Lake Marina and RV Park, and Pingala RV Resort take direct bookings through their own websites or offices, often with a two-night minimum on summer weekends. For holiday weekends and any July or August stay, book eight or more weeks out.
What to expect on arrival
At Illinois Beach, the South Unit campground has 241 Class A Premium sites with electricity and access to showers and sanitary facilities, but no individual water or sewer hookups. A dump station and accessible restrooms are on site, and campers must check in with a camping unit and either a reservation or a permit from park staff. Only certified firewood may be brought into Illinois state parks due to Emerald Ash Borer restrictions.
Chain O' Lakes offers a mix of Class A Premium electric sites at Honeysuckle Hollow and Fox Den plus Class B Premium non-electric sites at Turner Lake South, Prairie View, and Mud Lake East. Maximum stay is 14 nights in a 30-day period. Full-hookup 30/50-amp service, laundry, and a camp store are standard at Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort. Cell coverage is generally good across the area.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lake%20Forest%2C%20IllinoisDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Lake Forest, IL?
Good news: for the vast majority of RVs you'll rent on RVezy in Lake Forest, your regular Class D driver's license is all you need. Illinois only requires an upgraded non-commercial license for personal motorhomes over 16,000 pounds gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), and nearly every travel trailer, campervan, and Class C motorhome on the platform falls comfortably under that threshold. You'll need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the booking flow. Visiting from another state or country? Your home license is recognized in Illinois, so just bring it along and you're ready to roll up Sheridan Road.
ilsos.gov/departments/drivers/drivers_license/classifications.htmlWhat protection is included with my Lake Forest RV rental?
Every RV rental in Lake Forest, IL booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can drive away with real peace of mind. You choose your coverage level at checkout (not the host), so you can pick the plan that fits your comfort level and budget. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the RV during your trip, and if a tire blows on I-94 or you need a tow near Waukegan, one phone call gets help dispatched any hour of the day. It is not traditional auto insurance, but it is substantial financial protection designed specifically for peer-to-peer RV trips.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Lake Forest RV trip?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policies (not individual hosts), and every reservation includes a money-back grace period right after you book, so you have breathing room if plans shift. If severe Lake Michigan weather, a flight cancellation, or a family emergency comes up, our support team is available to walk you through your options. The exact refund depends on how far out you cancel and the specific policy applied to your booking, but the system is designed to be fair to renters. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best Lake Forest RVs for summer weekends, knowing you have flexibility if life happens.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Lake Forest RV rental?
Absolutely, plenty of pet-friendly RV rental options in Lake Forest are ready for your four-legged co-pilot. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see motorhomes and travel trailers from hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Lake County is a great launchpad for pet travel: dogs are welcome on-leash at Independence Grove Forest Preserve in Libertyville, Lake Forest Dog Beach (permit required for residents and guests via the Lake Forest Parks & Recreation department), and the trail system at Old School Forest Preserve. Pro tip: message your host to confirm any pet fee and ask for a recommendation on their favorite local dog-walking loop before pickup.
lakecountyil.gov/2256/Forest-PreservesCan the RV be delivered to me in Lake Forest?
Yes, RV delivery in Lake Forest is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters who do not want to drive a big rig through the North Shore's winding roads. Many local hosts will deliver and set up the RV at your campsite, your driveway, or a nearby campground like Illinois Beach State Park in Zion. They will level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every switch and system before they leave. Filter by Delivery on the listing page to see who offers it, and check the delivery radius (most cover Lake County and reach into northern Cook County). Bonus: you skip the stress of city driving entirely.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lake%20Forest%2C%20IllinoisHow far can I travel on a Lake Forest RV trip?
You've got serious range from Lake Forest, and many hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage or a generous nightly allowance (typically 100 to 150 free miles per night). From Lake Forest you can reach Starved Rock State Park in about 1 hour 45 minutes (95 miles), Wisconsin Dells in roughly 2 hours 45 minutes (165 miles), Door County in about 4 hours (215 miles), Indiana Dunes National Park in just over an hour (75 miles), and the Wisconsin Northwoods around Minocqua in 4 hours 30 minutes. Pro tip: filter listings by mileage policy and message hosts about your route so you can grab the best deal for a longer Lake Forest RV trip.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks.htmlWhere are the best campgrounds near Lake Forest, IL?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Lake Forest. The best campgrounds near Lake Forest include Illinois Beach State Park in Zion (about 20 miles north, with lakefront sites right on Lake Michigan), Chain O'Lakes State Park in Spring Grove (about 35 miles northwest, with Fox Den and Turner Lake South loops for RVs), Camp Reinberg in Palatine (about 15 miles west, with electric hookups and Deer Grove trails), and Fish Lake Beach in Volo (privately owned with full hookups and family amenities). Pro tip: Illinois Beach books up fast for summer weekends, so reserve early through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources reservation system.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.illinoisbeach.htmlWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Lake Forest?
The sweet spot for RV camping in Lake Forest runs from late May through early October, when daytime temperatures sit between 70 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit and Lake Michigan beaches are at their best. June and September are the local insider favorites: warm enough for swimming at Forest Park Beach but without the July humidity or peak campground crowds. Fall foliage along the Skokie River and Ryerson Woods peaks in mid-October and makes for stunning RV photography. Winter rentals are possible too if your host offers a four-season rig, but most travelers aim for that May to October window. Pro tip: book 8 to 12 weeks ahead for July 4th and Labor Day weekends.
weather.gov/lot/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You will be fine, and you are in great company because first time renting an RV is one of the most common scenarios for our Lake Forest guests. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup or delivery, covering the propane system, slide-outs, fresh and gray water tanks, leveling, and how to back into a campsite. Many guests start with a travel trailer or a Class C motorhome (around 22 to 28 feet) because they drive much like a large pickup. If you would rather skip city driving altogether, book delivery to your campground. Pro tip: do a slow practice loop around the quiet streets near Deerpath Golf Course before hitting I-94.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I break down during my Lake Forest RV trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on the Tri-State Tollway, a dead battery at Chain O'Lakes, or an overheated engine on a Wisconsin run is one phone call away from help. The roadside team can dispatch tow trucks, tire service, jump starts, lockout assistance, and fuel delivery anywhere in the U.S. Your host is also a quick message away in the RVezy app if you have questions about how something works in their specific rig. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate at pickup so info is handy if you ever need to call in.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Lake Forest RV rental into Wisconsin or other states?
Yes, an RV road trip from Lake Forest into Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, or anywhere in the continental U.S. is welcome on RVezy as long as you let your host know your planned route. Cross-state travel is covered under your renter protection plan, which is great news because Lake Forest sits just 45 minutes from the Wisconsin state line. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental due to insurance coverage limits. Popular routes include Lake Forest to Door County, Lake Forest to Mackinac Island via the Upper Peninsula, and Lake Forest down to the Indiana Dunes lakeshore. Pro tip: share your itinerary in the booking message so your host can flag any low bridges or weight-restricted routes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Lake Forest RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable in your trip budget, but it's easy to plan for. Most Class C motorhomes you'll rent in Lake Forest get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class A motorhomes average 6 to 10 MPG, campervans and Class B rigs land at 16 to 22 MPG, and trucks towing travel trailers typically see 9 to 13 MPG. Illinois gas prices in the Lake County area generally run a bit above the national average due to state and Cook County-adjacent taxes, so fuel up in Wisconsin (Kenosha is just 25 minutes north) where prices are typically 30 to 60 cents per gallon lower. Pro tip: use GasBuddy along I-94 to spot the cheapest stations near the state line.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Lake Forest?
For the best campgrounds near Lake Forest, plan to book 3 to 6 months ahead for summer weekends, especially anything along Lake Michigan. Illinois state park sites (including Illinois Beach and Chain O'Lakes) open reservations through the Illinois DNR's Explore More IL system, and prime lakefront pads at Illinois Beach are often snapped up within hours of release. Lake County Forest Preserve sites at Van Patten Woods can be booked through the Lake County Forest Preserves website. Private parks like Fish Lake Beach typically open bookings many months out. Pro tip: weekday arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) are far easier to grab and often $10 to $20 cheaper per night.
camp.exploremoreil.com/What are the driving conditions like around Lake Forest?
Lake Forest driving is straightforward once you know a few local quirks. Sheridan Road, the iconic North Shore route, has tight curves and overhanging trees, so larger Class A motorhomes are better suited to Route 41 or I-94 (the Edens and Tri-State Tollway). Watch for the 12'6" railroad underpass on Deerpath Road and the low clearances near the Metra tracks downtown. Summer weekends bring heavy traffic from Chicagoans heading to Wisconsin, so leave Friday mornings or after 7 p.m. for an easier run. Winter (December to March) can mean lake-effect snow squalls off Lake Michigan. Pro tip: a motorhome rental in Lake Forest under 26 feet handles every local road comfortably, including residential streets.
gettingaroundillinois.com/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Lake Forest?
Campgrounds near Lake Forest range from basic to fully loaded. Illinois Beach State Park offers electric hookups (no water or sewer at the site), flush toilets, hot showers, and a dump station near the entrance. Chain O'Lakes State Park provides electric sites plus a centralized water fill and dump station. Private parks like Fish Lake Beach in Volo and Blackhawk Valley near Rockford offer full hookups (electric, water, and sewer) right at the site, plus Wi-Fi, laundry, and pools. For dumping and filling between stops, the Mobil station in Gurnee and Camping World in Wadsworth both offer public dump and freshwater stations. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 30-amp to 50-amp adapter to cover any campground setup.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.chainolakes.htmlWhat's inside the RVs available in Lake Forest?
Lake Forest RVs come fully equipped for a home-on-wheels experience. Expect a queen or king bed in the main bedroom, additional sleeping for 2 to 6 in convertible dinettes and bunks, a kitchen with a refrigerator, freezer, propane or induction stove, microwave, and sink, plus a bathroom with a toilet and shower. Most rigs include air conditioning, a propane furnace, a TV, and seatbelted seating for everyone riding. Many newer listings add solar panels, onboard generators, and Wi-Fi boosters, perfect for streaming a Cubs game from your campsite. Filter by sleeps count, generator, and Wi-Fi on RVezy to find the right fit. Pro tip: ask the host whether linens, kitchen kits, and a portable grill are included or available as add-ons.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lake%20Forest%2C%20IllinoisWhat add-ons and options do Lake Forest hosts offer?
Lake Forest hosts make it easy to customize your trip. Popular add-ons include delivery and setup (around $2 to $4 per mile is typical in Lake County), bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits with pots, plates, and utensils, portable grills, generators, bike racks, and even kayaks or fishing gear for Lake Michigan day trips. Mileage policies vary: some hosts offer unlimited miles, others include 100 to 150 free miles per night with a per-mile charge after that. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Lake Forest, Lake Bluff, or Highland Park, with most allowing pickup in the early afternoon. Pro tip: bundle add-ons in your initial booking message for a smoother checkout.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lake%20Forest%2C%20IllinoisHow does the security deposit and payment work?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book an RV rental in Lake Forest, IL on RVezy, you pay the full trip cost (rental, protection, taxes, and any add-ons) by credit or debit card right through the platform, never directly to the host. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before pickup and is released after your trip if the RV is returned in the same condition. To avoid issues, do a quick walkaround video with your host at pickup and dropoff, return with the same fuel and propane levels, and dump the tanks if your contract requires it. Pro tip: keep all receipts and dump-station stubs in the RVezy chat for easy proof.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park an RV in Lake Forest overnight if I'm not at a campground?
You have a few solid options. Lake Forest itself is a residential community without designated overnight RV parking on public streets, so the smart play is to stay at your host's driveway (with permission), at a nearby campground like Illinois Beach State Park or Van Patten Woods Forest Preserve, or at retailers in the Gurnee and Wadsworth area such as Cabela's or Camping World where self-contained overnight stays may be allowed with manager approval. Illinois rest areas along I-94 permit short rest stops but not overnight camping. For a quick family RV trip in Lake Forest, the easiest path is booking delivery straight to your campsite. Pro tip: always call ahead to confirm overnight parking is allowed before you arrive.
