Lake Petersburg camping overview
Lake Petersburg is a small reservoir community in Menard County, central Illinois, about two miles south of the town of Petersburg and less than a mile from the Sangamon River. The unincorporated community centers on a small reservoir used by residents for recreation, and Petersburg, the county seat, sits two miles to the north. The area is within easy reach of Springfield to the south and puts RV travelers close to Lincoln-era historic sites, Sangamon River fishing, and central Illinois state lands.
RV options near Lake Petersburg are mostly private, family-run parks. Double J Campground and RV Park sits in the immediate Petersburg area, while Crazy Horse Campground and Crazy Horse Campground, L.L.C. are a short drive west near Ashland. Crazy Horse is a 55-acre campground north of Jacksonville and west of Springfield, with stocked ponds for fishing, planned crafts and activities, disc golf, live music, and a swim area.
For travelers willing to drive north into Mason County, Evening Star Camping Resort and Pine Camp at Sand Ridge State Forest add resort-style and rustic public-land options to the trip menu.
Things to do around Lake Petersburg
Fishing, boating, and lake swimming anchor most stays. At Crazy Horse Campground, guests can fish stocked ponds, join planned crafts and activities, play disc golf, listen to live music, swim, or relax by the fire. The Sangamon River corridor and nearby Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site add paddling, hiking, and a walk-through living-history village depicting Abraham Lincoln's early adult years.
Day trips reach further afield. Sand Ridge State Forest, the largest forest in the state, covers roughly 7,200 acres of oak-hickory woodlands, pine plantations, grasslands, and sand prairies, with fishing, hiking, biking, swimming, and hunting on offer. From Pine Camp, a 5-mile orange trail loop starts at the campground and gives easy access to the sandy forest and its prickly pear cactus.

Central Illinois has a four-season humid continental climate. Springfield sees very large seasonal temperature contrasts, with warm summers and cold winters that bring regular snowfall, and precipitation spread relatively evenly through the year, though summers tend to be wetter and winters drier. Most private RV parks in the Petersburg area operate on a spring-to-fall schedule.
Evening Star Camping Resort is open from April 1 to October 31, and other private parks follow a similar warm-season pattern. Peak demand tracks the state fair season in August and the fall color and Halloween weekends in October, so booking early for holiday weekends is wise.
Winter camping options are limited. Sand Ridge State Forest can be visited off-season for hiking and snowmobiling when snow depth allows, but Pine Camp is a rustic Class C area without full hookups. Spring can be wet and buggy, and late summer often brings heavy tick activity in wooded and prairie areas.

How to book campgrounds near Lake Petersburg
Private parks handle their own reservations. Crazy Horse Campground, Crazy Horse Campground, L.L.C., Double J Campground and RV Park, and Evening Star Camping Resort take bookings directly by phone or website, and offer a mix of full-hookup, water-and-electric, and primitive sites. Evening Star Camping Resort has over 300 sites with full hook-ups, water and electric connections, and primitive camping, plus rental cabins and trailers.
Pine Camp at Sand Ridge State Forest is reserved through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources system. Reservations are required, and campers can place them six months in advance and up to four days before the date of arrival. Pine Camp is rustic with 27 Class C sites featuring water, pit-vault toilets, a fire pad, and space to park two vehicles. Reserve well ahead for summer weekends.
What to expect on the ground
Expect quiet, rural, agricultural surroundings. Roads to the campgrounds are paved or well-maintained gravel, and most private parks accept larger rigs, including 40-foot Class A motorhomes, with both pull-through and back-in options. Sites at Crazy Horse are level packed gravel.
Stock up before arriving. Small central-Illinois towns have limited groceries, so plan resupply in Springfield or Jacksonville. At public-land sites, Pine Camp is primitive: bring extra drinking water, expect vault toilets, and be ready for sand, insects, and heavy tick activity in warm months. Cell coverage is generally reliable near Petersburg but can thin out inside Sand Ridge State Forest.
