Campgrounds and RV parks near Limestone, IL

The Kankakee River drives most trip planning. Anglers, paddlers, hikers, and cyclists find broad access along both banks of the park, and smallmouth bass, walleye, northern pike, and panfish are common catches from shore and boat. Paddling is popular through the warmer months, and the park operates two boat launches limited to motors of 10 horsepower or less. On land, hiking and cycling trails run along both banks, and the equestrian area draws horse campers in season. Families staying at Kankakee South KOA Holiday or Enchanted Shores typically split time between campground amenities and day trips into the park. Motorsports fans base at Chicagoland Speedway/Lakeside Campgrounds when events are on the calendar, and Martin Campground works as a quieter rural stay.

The main RV season runs from spring through mid-fall. The park's Equestrian Campground off Illinois Route 113 is open only from April 1 through October 31, and the other state park campgrounds see peak demand from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with fall foliage weekends also filling quickly. Summer weekends at Potowatomi - Kankakee River State Park book out well in advance, so reserve early. Chippewa Campground, which had been closed for years, reopened in recent seasons, adding capacity but not eliminating the summer crunch. Private parks like Kankakee South KOA Holiday tend to stay busy through the shoulder seasons as well. Winter is quiet. Most private campgrounds close or offer limited services from late fall through early spring, and while some day-use areas of the state park stay open, RV amenities are seasonal. Spring can bring high river levels and muddy access roads, so check park updates before towing in.

Sites inside the state park are wooded and relatively level. Potawatomi Campground has 110 Class A sites with showers and electricity in a wooded setting, which suits most standard rental rigs, though big-rig maneuvering is easier at private parks with pull-through hookups. Quiet hours are enforced. The campgrounds close at 10 p.m., and all campgrounds observe quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. with no vehicular traffic allowed during that time. Plan arrivals accordingly, especially on Friday nights. Cell coverage along the river corridor is generally usable, but shaded sites can hurt satellite reception. An emerald ash borer quarantine is in effect for Kankakee County, so firewood cannot be brought into or taken out of the park. Bring bug spray for summer stays, and pack layers in shoulder seasons when overnight lows can drop sharply.
