Camping near Lincoln, Illinois
Lincoln sits in Logan County in central Illinois, along Interstate 55 and the historic Route 66 corridor between Springfield and Bloomington. The surrounding landscape is flat farmland cut by Salt Creek and dotted with small lakes, which shapes what RV renters find nearby: a mix of small private parks close to town and a larger state park campground about 30 minutes east.
The closest option, Camp A While, is a small privately owned park just off I-55 that suits overnight travelers rolling through on Route 66. Kentuckiana Campground near Hopedale and Kamp Komfort near Carlock sit north toward Bloomington-Normal and lean family-oriented, with playgrounds and on-site activities. Arrowhead Acres and Weldon Springs State Recreational Area are both near Clinton, closer to the Weldon Springs Lake fishery.
Most visitors use Lincoln as a base for Route 66 sightseeing, Abraham Lincoln historical sites, and short drives to Springfield, Bloomington, or Decatur.
Things to do near Lincoln
Lincoln is a working stop on the Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway. In town, RV travelers can visit the Postville Courthouse State Historic Site, a replica of the 1840 courthouse where Abraham Lincoln practiced law on the Eighth Judicial Circuit, plus the Mill Museum on 66, the Tropics neon sign, the Lincoln Heritage Museum at Lincoln College, and the World's Largest Covered Wagon.
For outdoor recreation, Weldon Springs State Park east of Clinton has a 29-acre spring-fed lake with about two miles of shoreline, bank fishing platforms, and a boat launch limited to electric motors, along with hiking trails including the Salt Creek Backpack Trail. Clinton Lake, a short drive from Arrowhead Acres, adds boating and larger-water fishing to the mix.

Central Illinois has a humid continental climate with strong seasonal swings. Peak RV season runs from late spring through early fall, and most private parks in the area, including Kamp Komfort, generally operate from April through October. The Weldon Springs campground is open year-round, but the shower building closes by November 1 and reopens May 1, with earlier or later transitions depending on weather.
Spring brings the wettest stretch and can bring flooding along Salt Creek, which affects the primitive backpack sites at Weldon Springs. Summer is warm and humid, with July typically the wettest month and afternoon thunderstorms common; holiday weekends and summer weekends fill quickly at state park sites and should be booked well ahead.
Fall is often the most comfortable window for touring Route 66 and hiking, with mild temperatures, lighter crowds, and fall color. Winter camping is possible at Weldon Springs, but expect cold conditions, limited services, and snow.

Greg was great! The RV was delivered in a timely fashion and Greg walked me through its various functions and amenities. I was able to travel with my family (5 of us in all) from Central Illinois to Estes Park, Colorado. We were able to step out of our RV every morning to the sight of mountains surrounding us, and the RV handled very well on the mountain roads! Thanks, Greg! My family and I were able to make some terrific memories!

Greg and his wife were excellent to work with and we had the best time traveling in their RV! Really a great experience for first-timers!

How to book near Lincoln
Weldon Springs State Recreational Area is managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Camping reservations are handled online through the ExploreMoreIL platform, which replaced ReserveAmerica for Illinois state park bookings. Campsites can be reserved for up to 14 nights within a 30-day period, and reservations must be made at least three days before arrival. Some holiday weekends require a two-night minimum. IDNR no longer accepts camping reservations by mail or phone.
Private parks near Lincoln handle their own bookings directly. Camp A While, Kentuckiana Campground, Arrowhead Acres, and Kamp Komfort take reservations by phone or through their own websites. For any primitive backpack site along Salt Creek at Weldon Springs, call the park office first to confirm conditions, since these sites can flood in spring.
What to expect near Lincoln
Expect small, quiet private parks in this area. Camp A While is a small park just off I-55 with a wooded setting surrounded by farm fields, and it functions well as an overnight stop for travelers on Route 66 or the interstate.
Weldon Springs offers 75 Class A sites with 30 or 50 amp electric service, a dump station, shower building, pit toilets, water hydrants throughout the campground, playground, and picnic tables. There is no site-level water or sewer. Separate tent, backpack, group, and youth camping areas are also available, and sites are back-in and gravel, so larger RVs should confirm dimensions before booking.
Mosquitoes, ticks, and poison ivy are common in wooded areas during warmer months.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Lincoln, IL
How much does an RV rental in Lincoln, IL really cost?
RV rental in Lincoln, IL is one of the most affordable ways to explore central Illinois, especially compared with hotel stays in Springfield or Bloomington. On RVezy, most travel trailers in the Lincoln area rent for roughly $90 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes typically land between $175 and $275 per night, and larger Class A coaches average $250 to $400 per night before fees. For a cheap RV rental in Lincoln, filter for travel trailers with delivery included, book midweek, and target shoulder months like April, May, or late September when demand around Route 66 attractions cools down. Pro tip: bundle delivery with a longer 4 to 7 night stay and many Logan County hosts will discount the nightly rate.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lincoln,%20IllinoisDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Lincoln, IL?
Good news: for the vast majority of RVs you can rent in Lincoln, your regular Class D driver's license is all you need. Illinois only requires an upgraded non-commercial license when a motorhome exceeds 16,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), and almost every travel trailer, campervan, and Class C motorhome on RVezy in the Lincoln area falls well under that threshold. To rent on RVezy you must be 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and ID verification happens right in the app. Out-of-state visitors are recognized under their home-state license. Filter for Class C or travel trailers and you can hit Route 66 with the license already in your wallet.
ilsos.gov/departments/drivers/drivers_license/home.htmlWhat protection comes with my Lincoln RV rental?
Every RV rental in Lincoln, IL booked through RVezy automatically includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can pull out of the driveway with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose the coverage level that fits you (Basic, Standard, or Premium) during checkout, not the host. It provides meaningful financial protection if something unexpected happens on I-55 or in a campground loop. Pro tip: pick the highest tier you are comfortable with for your first time renting an RV. The peace of mind is worth far more than the small nightly difference.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if my plans change after I book a Lincoln, IL RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy, not the host, sets the cancellation policy, and every booking includes a grace-period window where you can cancel for a full refund shortly after booking. After that grace period, refunds scale based on how far out from your trip you cancel, and special situations like declared natural disasters (think central Illinois tornado warnings or major winter storms) are reviewed by our support team. The cancellation policy is standardized across the platform rather than displayed on each listing. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best Lincoln rigs for Logan County Fair week or Route 66 events, knowing you still have room to adjust if plans change.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Lincoln, IL RV trip?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Lincoln is easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see listings whose hosts welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Lincoln itself is great for four-legged co-pilots: Postville Park and Kickapoo Creek Park have shaded walking paths, and Edward Madigan State Park just west of town has leashed-pet trails along the Salt Creek bottomlands. Nearby campgrounds like Camp A While and Hickory Lane Campground in Atlanta, IL, both allow leashed pets at most sites. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any size or breed notes, and pack a collapsible water bowl. Central Illinois summers get humid fast.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.edwardrmadigan.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campground or address in Lincoln, IL?
Yes, RV delivery in Lincoln is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it is a game-changer if it is your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will tow or drive the rig directly to your campground, a friend's driveway, or a Route 66 event site, then level it, hook up water and 30/50-amp power, and walk you through every system. Popular delivery destinations from Lincoln include Camp A While off Route 121, Edward R. Madigan State Park, and Weldon Springs State Recreation Area near Clinton (about 25 miles southeast). Use the Delivery filter to see who offers it. Pro tip: ask about a setup-only package, you drive nothing and arrive to a ready campsite.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lincoln,%20IllinoisHow far can I drive from Lincoln on a typical RV rental?
Plenty far, Lincoln sits right on Interstate 55 in the heart of Illinois, putting major destinations within an easy day's drive. Springfield is just 30 miles south (about 35 minutes), Peoria is 40 miles north, St. Louis is roughly 140 miles southwest (around 2.5 hours), Chicago is 160 miles northeast (about 3 hours), and Indianapolis sits 200 miles east. A great RV road trip from Lincoln is the historic Route 66 corridor through Atlanta, Funks Grove, and Pontiac. Each RVezy host sets their own mileage policy: many include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and you can also find listings tagged with RV rental with unlimited mileage. Pro tip: filter by unlimited mileage if you're planning a Chicago or St. Louis loop.
idot.illinois.gov/travel-information/maps.htmlWhere are the best campgrounds near Lincoln, IL for an RV trip?

Weldon Springs State Recreation Area near Clinton has Illinois Department of Natural Resources sites with electric hookups around a 29-acre lake. Mr. Lincoln's Campground is also right in town for quick overnight stays. Slightly farther, Riverside Park Campground in Springfield offers full hookups along the Sangamon River. Pro tip: book IDNR sites through the Reserve America/ExploreMore IL system up to six months out for popular summer weekends.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.weldonsprings.htmlWhen is the best time of year to plan a Lincoln, IL RV trip?
Late April through mid-October is prime RV camping in Lincoln, with the absolute sweet spots being May, June, September, and early October. Summer highs in Lincoln average in the mid-80s°F with humid afternoons and pop-up thunderstorms, while spring and fall hover in the comfortable 60s and 70s°F. Winters dip into the teens with around 20 inches of snow per season, so most state-park campgrounds at places like Weldon Springs run their reservable RV sites May 1 through October 31. For a family RV trip Lincoln-style, target the second weekend of September when the Logan County Fair and Route 66 Garage Sale draw crowds. Pro tip: book shoulder-season weekends for cool nights and zero mosquitoes.
weather.gov/ilx/ilx-normal-monthlyI have never driven an RV. Will I be okay picking one up in Lincoln?
You will do great, Lincoln is honestly one of the easiest places in Illinois to learn. The terrain around Logan County is flat, the roads are wide, and Interstate 55, Interstate 155, and Route 121 give you straightforward routes with very little traffic compared to Chicago or St. Louis. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering propane, water, leveling, slide-outs, and the dump valve, and 24/7 roadside assistance is included with your protection plan. If you are truly new, pick a smaller Class C motorhome or a travel trailer under 25 feet, or book delivery so you skip towing entirely. Pro tip: do a practice loop in a large empty parking lot before heading to the campground.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road near Lincoln?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy rental in Lincoln includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and tow service. One quick call gets help dispatched whether you are at a rest area on I-55, a campground loop at Weldon Springs, or somewhere along Route 66 between Atlanta and Lincoln. Your host is also reachable by message in the app, and RVezy's support team backs you up before, during, and after the trip. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number to your phone contacts before you leave the driveway, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate so you have it handy.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Lincoln RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is built into RV camping in Lincoln, your rental can cross into Missouri, Indiana, Iowa, Wisconsin, or Kentucky and the protection plan follows you. A favorite RV road trip from Lincoln is south on I-55 toward the Ozarks, or east on I-74 to Indianapolis. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed but requires written approval from your host before booking, since insurance and protection terms can differ. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: message the host with your full itinerary so they can confirm the route and any mileage adjustments up front.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much will fuel cost on a motorhome rental in Lincoln?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost, but it's very manageable from Lincoln. Gas prices in central Illinois typically run a bit below the Chicago metro average, and most Class C motorhome rental Lincoln options get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, campervans (Class B) get 15 to 20 mpg, and a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer averages 10 to 14 mpg. For a typical 300-mile weekend loop through Springfield, Petersburg, and back, budget roughly $120 to $200 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up at the Pilot or Love's just off I-55 Exit 126 in Lincoln before heading out, prices there are usually a few cents cheaper than at campground-adjacent stations, and the pumps fit big rigs comfortably.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds around Lincoln?
For Illinois Department of Natural Resources parks like Weldon Springs, Edward R. Madigan, and Lincoln's New Salem near Petersburg, reservations open up to six months in advance through the state's online reservation system, and you must book at least a few days before arrival. Most campsites are reservable May 1 through October 31, with a 14-night maximum and a small non-refundable reservation fee plus the camping and utility fees. Holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) often require a two-night minimum, so lock those in by February or March. Private parks like Camp A While and Hickory Lane book directly. Pro tip: for a Route 66 weekend or Logan County Fair stay, reserve as soon as the booking window opens.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/camp.htmlWhat are driving conditions like around Lincoln, IL?
Driving an RV in and around Lincoln is refreshingly low-stress. Logan County is flat farmland with wide, straight roads, and Interstate 55 cuts right through town with generous shoulders and easy exits at Lincoln (Exit 126) and Atlanta (Exit 140). Watch for two things: sudden spring and summer thunderstorms with high crosswinds across open prairie (especially March through July), and the occasional ice storm or blowing snow in winter. Stay alert for slow-moving farm equipment on rural routes like IL-10 and IL-121 during planting and harvest seasons. Pro tip: check IDOT's Getting Around Illinois map before you roll out, and avoid I-55 northbound on Sunday afternoons when Chicago weekenders are returning home.
idot.illinois.gov/travel-information/road-conditions.htmlWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Lincoln?
Most campgrounds near Lincoln are well equipped for a smooth stay. Private parks like Camp A While, Hickory Lane Campground, and Cedarbrook RV Park offer full hookups (30 and 50-amp electric, water, and sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, hot showers, and dog runs. State-park sites at Weldon Springs and Edward Madigan typically include electric hookups and a central dump station and potable water fill, but not always sewer at the site. The closest dump stations and freshwater fills in Lincoln itself are at Mr. Lincoln's Campground RV Center on the south edge of town. Pro tip: top off freshwater before leaving the campground, gas stations along I-55 rarely have potable water suitable for RV tanks.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.weldonsprings.htmlWhat features and amenities come inside a typical Lincoln RV rental?
Today's RVezy rentals around Lincoln are basically apartments on wheels. Expect a full kitchen with a propane stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, and sink; a wet or dry bathroom with a toilet and shower; comfortable sleeping for 2 to 8 (queen beds, bunks, or convertible dinettes); air conditioning and furnace heat; and seatbelted seating for travel. Many listings also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and a backup camera. Campervan rental Lincoln options (Class B) are more compact but include the essentials. Wi-Fi and generators are common add-ons. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count and scroll the photos. Hosts list whether the rig has solar, a generator, or shore-power-only, which matters if you want to boondock at Clinton Lake.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lincoln,%20IllinoisWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about for a Lincoln RV rental?
RVezy hosts in Lincoln offer some genuinely useful extras that can transform your trip. Common add-ons include kitchen kits, linen and bedding packages, camp chairs and tables, portable grills, generators, bike racks, and tank cleaning at return so you do not have to dump it yourself. Pickup is usually at the host's address in or around Lincoln, but many offer delivery to your campground for a flat fee or per-mile rate. Mileage policies vary by listing: some include free miles per night, others offer unlimited. Pro tip: bundle linens, kitchen, and tank cleaning on your first trip. The convenience is worth far more than figuring it out at 9 p.m. in a campground.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lincoln,%20IllinoisHow do payment and the security deposit work for a Lincoln RV rental?
Payment on RVezy is straightforward and secure, you pay the full booking total (nightly rate, fees, protection, and any add-ons) through the platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before pickup and released after the trip once the host confirms the rig came back in good shape. To avoid any deposit issues on your Lincoln RV rental, document the RV at pickup and return with timestamped photos and video, return it with the fuel and propane levels noted in the agreement, and use the tank-cleaning add-on if it is offered. Pro tip: do the walkaround with the host on camera. It protects everyone.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Lincoln during winter, and is it worth it?
Yes, winter RV rentals in Lincoln are doable and can be a quiet, scenic experience along Route 66. Look for listings tagged as four-season or winter-ready, these rigs have heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, an upgraded furnace, and skirting options to keep plumbing from freezing when overnight temperatures drop into the teens or single digits (typical December through February). Most state-park campgrounds in central Illinois close their water service from November to April, so plan to stay at year-round private parks or use shore power at a friend's driveway. Pro tip: ask your host for winter prep tips at pickup and pack extra propane. A 30-pound tank goes faster than you would expect when the prairie wind kicks up.
