Camping near Loami, Illinois
Loami sits in Sangamon County just southwest of Springfield, putting RV travelers within a short drive of the state capital and several central Illinois lakes. The area is flat farm country crossed by county highways and Interstate 55, so towable and drivable rigs of most sizes reach nearby campgrounds without difficulty.
Most overnight options cluster east and south of Springfield. Double J Campground and RV Park and Crazy Horse Campground provide private-park hookups close to town, while Springfield KOA Journey sits southeast of the city near Rochester and offers pull-thru RV sites, cabins, and tent areas. For a state-park stay on the water, Hickory Point at Sangchris Lake State Park is roughly a half-hour drive southeast.
Springfield itself anchors most trip itineraries. Lincoln historic sites, the Illinois State Museum, and Lake Springfield are all within a short drive of Loami, which makes the area a practical base for families combining sightseeing with lake recreation.
Things to do around Loami
History drives most Springfield-area itineraries. Families tour the Lincoln Home National Historic Site, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, and the Old State Capitol, then drive out to New Salem State Historic Site, where costumed interpreters recreate the frontier village where the future president lived and worked.
Water and outdoor recreation sit close by. Lake Springfield is a major central Illinois recreation center offering boating, fishing, and water sports, with roughly 57 miles of shoreline including public parks, boat docks, and launches. At Sangchris Lake, anglers target bass, bluegill, crappie, and catfish from shore or boat, and the park includes an archery range and seasonal dog training areas.
For rainy days, the Henson Robinson Zoo, the Dana-Thomas House, and Route 66 roadside stops give families indoor and drive-up alternatives.

Central Illinois has a clear camping season that runs spring through fall. State-park campsites at Sangchris Lake use a defined booking window: reservations can be made online through ExploreMoreIL or by phone with a credit card for the period of April 1 through October 31. Deer Run Campground on the north end of the lake is typically closed from mid-January until March, so winter RV trips generally rely on private parks.
Summer is peak season. Weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and the Illinois State Fair in August book out early, and pool amenities at private parks generally operate from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Spring brings green landscapes and lower demand, but also the region's wettest, most thunderstorm-prone weeks.
Fall offers cooler nights, harvest scenery, and easier reservations before state-park sites close at the end of October. Winter travelers should confirm year-round status directly with any private park before arrival.
How to book campgrounds near Loami
State-park sites at Sangchris Lake are handled through the Illinois DNR system. Camping and cabin reservations can be made at ExploreMoreIL, and at Hickory Point Campground a portion of the Class A sites and the rent-a-cabins are reservable while the remainder are first-come, first-served. Book several weeks ahead for summer weekends and holiday windows.
Private parks each use their own systems. Springfield KOA Journey takes reservations through the KOA website and app, and Double J Campground and RV Park and Crazy Horse Campground accept bookings by phone or through their own online forms. For larger rigs, confirm site length, hookup amperage, and slide clearances at the time of booking, and ask about pet policies if traveling with dogs.
What to expect on arrival
Most sites in the Loami area are level and grass or gravel, with pull-thrus common at private parks and back-in sites more typical at state-park loops. At Springfield KOA Journey, expect level pull-through and back-in RV sites with full hookups including water, sewer, and 20/30/50 amp electric, with some premium sites offering concrete patios.
State-park facilities are simpler. At Sangchris Lake, Hickory Point Campground contains 55 Class A, 10 Class C, and two rent-a-cabin sites, with playground equipment, showers, and a restroom with flush toilets nearby. Cell coverage is generally usable across the area for navigation.
Bring bug spray for summer evenings, a water pressure regulator, and a surge protector. Firewood should be sourced locally to comply with Illinois rules on moving wood.
