Lockport camping overview
Lockport sits in Will County along the historic Illinois and Michigan Canal, roughly 30 miles southwest of downtown Chicago. The city works as a practical base for RV travelers who want quick access to the Chicago metro without paying urban parking rates, plus direct routes to the I&M Canal State Trail, the Des Plaines River, and the Joliet entertainment corridor.
RV options in the area range from full-service resort-style parks to basic rural campgrounds. Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort offers partial hookups with 30/50-amp electric and water, a sewer connection point behind the hotel, clean showers, complimentary morning coffee and donuts, laundry, and pet-friendly pull-through sites, with Wi-Fi accessible at the adjacent hotel. Nearby, Martin Campground and Leisure Lake Membership Resort provide additional local choices, with Leisure Lake leaning toward water-based recreation. Chicagoland Speedway/Lakeside Campgrounds and Enchanted Shores round out the closest options.
Because Lockport sits on the I-55 and I-80 corridors, most campgrounds are within a short drive of a major interstate, which makes arrival easy but means highway and rail noise is a real consideration when picking a site.
Things to do around Lockport
The I&M Canal State Trail is the anchor attraction, following the historic towpath 61 miles from Rockdale west to LaSalle. Channahon State Park serves as a popular access point, with two restored canal locks and a locktender's house on site. Cyclists ride the flat crushed-limestone towpath toward Morris and beyond, and canoeists can paddle 15 miles of open canal between Channahon and Gebhard Woods with abundant wildlife viewing.
Anglers fish the canal and the Des Plaines, DuPage, and Kankakee rivers for bass, crappie, bluegill, catfish, and bullhead. Guests at Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort get a shuttle to the casino complex and restaurants, with the Joliet Area Historical Museum a short drive away. NASCAR fans base at Chicagoland Speedway/Lakeside Campgrounds during race weekends. For a Chicago day trip, Metra rail from nearby stations reaches downtown in about an hour.

Lockport has four distinct seasons and camping availability tracks them closely. Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort operates seasonally, typically from mid-April to mid-October, and requires guests to be at least 21. Many smaller private parks follow a similar April-to-October window, though a handful of Will County properties stay open longer. Summer weekends fill quickly, especially those tied to NASCAR events at Chicagoland Speedway and to Chicago-area festivals.
Spring brings wildflowers along the canal towpath and cool riding conditions, but also the wettest stretch of the year and occasional river flooding along the Des Plaines and DuPage. Summer is hot, humid, and buggy near the water, with July averaging highs in the low 80s Fahrenheit. Fall is the sweet spot for RV travel: drier air, thinner crowds, and foliage along the canal corridor through October.
Winter camping is limited. Freezing temperatures, snow, and reduced services shut down most private RV parks, and only a few year-round properties remain accessible.

How to book near Lockport
Private RV parks around Lockport, including Martin Campground, Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort, Leisure Lake Membership Resort, and Enchanted Shores, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. For NASCAR weekends and summer holidays, book eight to twelve weeks ahead.
For state-run camping in the area, online reservations for Illinois Department of Natural Resources campgrounds and shelters go through the ExploreMoreIL website, paying by Visa, MasterCard, or Discover. A non-refundable reservation fee plus the full camping and utility fees are due at booking. Most sites are reservable from May 1 through October 31, up to 180 days out from the arrival date, for a maximum of 14 nights, and reservations must be made at least three days before arrival. Most state campgrounds also hold first-come, first-served sites, so contact the park directly for same-day availability.
What to expect on arrival
Expect a suburban-industrial setting rather than wilderness. Most Lockport-area parks sit near interstates, rail lines, or the working canal, which keeps arrival easy but adds background noise. Reviewers frequently mention traffic and train sound at properties close to I-80. Sites tend to be relatively large, flat, and suitable for a range of RV sizes.
Hookup levels vary. Resort-style parks commonly offer 30/50-amp electric and water, with a dump station or sewer connection nearby rather than at each site. Tent camping at Channahon State Park is rustic, with fire rings, picnic tables, pit toilets, and a permit from the park office, and it is not suited to larger RVs.
Cell service is generally strong across the metro fringe. Grocery stores, propane, dump stations, and RV service in Joliet and Romeoville are within a short drive, so restocking mid-trip is straightforward.

Popular drop-off spots include Channahon State Park, Des Plaines Fish and Wildlife Area, and private campgrounds along the Illinois River. Use the Delivery filter when searching and check each listing for the host's free delivery radius (often 10 to 25 miles) versus a per-mile fee beyond that. camp.exploremoreil.com/When is the best time to take an RV trip from Lockport?
Late April through mid-October is prime time for a Lockport RV trip, with the sweet spots being May, June, September, and early October. Summer days typically run in the upper 70s to upper 80s F with humid evenings perfect for sitting outside the awning, while spring and fall hover in the mild 55 to 75 F range with fewer mosquitoes and lower campsite demand. June brings the Lockport Old Canal Days festival, July and August are peak family camping season, and late September delivers gorgeous fall color along the I&M Canal Trail. Winters get cold (often 20 to 35 F with snow), but several hosts offer four-season, heated-tank rigs if you want a quiet shoulder-season stay.
weather.gov/lot/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be able to handle it?
Absolutely, and Lockport is a friendly place to learn. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup (or at delivery), walking you through the generator, slide-outs, water hookups, dump valves, propane, and driving quirks of the specific rig. First time renting an RV is much easier than most people expect, especially if you start with a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer. From Lockport you can practice on flat, straight roads like IL-7 or Route 53 before hitting I-80. Tip: book delivery for your first trip so the host parks and levels the RV for you, freeing you to focus on enjoying the campfire instead of backing into a site.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002180233-RentersWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering things like flat tires, lockouts, dead batteries, and towing. If a slide-out gets stuck at Channahon State Park or a tire blows on I-55, one phone call gets a technician dispatched. Your host is also a quick text away for questions about how the RV's specific systems work, and RVezy's customer support team is reachable throughout your trip. Tip: before you leave Lockport, snap a photo of the RV's VIN, plate, and tire size so you can share it with the roadside team in seconds if you ever need them.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Lockport RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome and very popular for renters leaving Lockport. You're well positioned to cross into Indiana (about 40 minutes east to the Dunes), Wisconsin (under 2 hours north to Lake Geneva), Iowa, Michigan, and Missouri without any extra paperwork. Cross-border trips into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and the protection plan selected, so message the host directly to confirm before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. A favorite RV road trip from Lockport is Historic Route 66 south through Pontiac and Springfield on toward St. Louis.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I plan for?
Plan realistically and you'll be pleasantly surprised. Class B campervans typically get 16 to 20 mpg, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 mpg, Class A coaches 6 to 10 mpg, and a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer roughly 10 to 14 mpg. Illinois gas prices in the Chicago metro tend to run noticeably above the national average thanks to state and local taxes, so filling up in Joliet, Plainfield, or just over the border in Indiana can yield real savings. For a 300-mile weekend out of Lockport in a Class C, budget roughly $120 to $170 in fuel at current prices. Tip: apps like GasBuddy and the Costco on Larkin Avenue in Joliet routinely have some of the lowest pump prices nearby.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Lockport?
Book early and you'll have your pick of the best sites. Illinois state parks like Channahon and Starved Rock open reservations up to six months in advance through Camp.ExploreMoreIL.com, and summer weekends, holidays, and fall color weekends fill within days. Cook County Forest Preserve campgrounds like Camp Bullfrog Lake and private parks like Leisure Lake Resort are best reserved 2 to 3 months ahead for July and August. For mid-week or shoulder-season trips you can often snag a site 2 to 4 weeks out. Tip: set a calendar reminder for the six-month mark if you want a riverfront site at Channahon over Memorial Day weekend or July 4.
camp.exploremoreil.com/What are driving conditions like in and around Lockport?
Lockport driving is friendly for RVs once you know the basics. Most local roads (IL-7, Route 53, Briggs Street, Archer Avenue) are flat, wide, and easy to handle. I-355 and I-80 are the main interstates and can get busy during Chicago rush hours, so aim to roll out before 7 AM or after 9:30 AM, and avoid the 3 to 6:30 PM window heading north. Watch for low railroad underpasses and historic bridges in the downtown canal district, which can be too low for tall Class A and Class C rigs, and always confirm posted clearances. Winter brings snow and salted roads from December through March. Tip: I-355 south to I-80 west is a smooth route toward Starved Rock.
gettingaroundillinois.com/What amenities should I expect at campgrounds around Lockport?
Local campgrounds run the full range, so you can match the experience to your comfort level. Channahon State Park offers primitive sites with potable water spigots and a dump station but no individual electric hookups. Des Plaines Fish and Wildlife Area provides rustic camping. Private parks like Camp Bullfrog Lake and Leisure Lake Resort offer full hookups (water, electric 30/50 amp, and sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, playgrounds, and on-site dump stations. For dumping mid-trip, the Channahon State Park dump station and most Pilot/Flying J truck stops along I-80 are reliable options. Tip: top off fresh water at the campground spigot the morning you leave so you've got plenty for the road.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.channahonstatepark.htmlWhat's actually inside the RVs available in Lockport?
Lockport-area listings cover everything from cozy campervans to family-sized motorhomes, but you can count on the essentials. Most rigs sleep 4 to 8 people in real beds (queen master, bunks, or convertible dinettes), with a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, propane or induction stove, microwave, sink, and cookware), an indoor bathroom with toilet and shower, roof-mounted air conditioning, and propane furnace heat. Travel trailers and motorhomes typically include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, and outdoor awning, while many also have a generator for off-grid power and DOT-rated seatbelts for travel. Wi-Fi or a cellular hotspot is a common add-on. Each motorhome rental Lockport host lists every amenity right on the listing page so there are no surprises.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lockport%2C%20IllinoisWhat add-ons and pickup options are available with my Lockport RV?
Hosts love adding extras that make your trip easier. Popular add-ons for a campervan rental Lockport or larger motorhome include kitchen kits, bedding and linens, generator usage, portable propane fire pits, bike racks, kayak racks, camping chairs, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Mileage policies vary by host, with most including 100 to 150 free miles per night and overage charged at roughly $0.25 to $0.45 per mile. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Lockport, Romeoville, Joliet, or Homer Glen, and many offer paid delivery to your campground. Tip: bundle delivery, setup, generator, and a kitchen kit on your first trip so you arrive to an RV that's truly ready to camp.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lockport%2C%20IllinoisHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and fully handled through RVezy, so you never hand cash or a check to the host. You pay securely online with a credit or debit card when you book, and the security deposit is held separately from the booking payment, typically pre-authorized on your card before pickup rather than charged outright. The deposit amount depends on the rig and the protection plan you choose at checkout. As long as the RV comes back in the agreed condition with the agreed mileage and generator hours, the hold is released after your trip. Tip: do a quick walk-around video at both pickup and drop-off so you and your host are aligned, then enjoy your RV rental Illinois adventure stress-free.
