Camping near Lockport Heights, Illinois
Lockport Heights sits in Will County along the Des Plaines River corridor, roughly 35 miles southwest of downtown Chicago. The area serves as a practical base for RV travelers who want quick access to the city, Joliet, and the surrounding Illinois and Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor without paying downtown rates or dealing with urban parking.
Most RV options within a short drive are private parks rather than public campgrounds. Martin Campground and Leisure Lake Membership Resort sit closest, both catering to trailers and motorhomes with electric and water hookups. Chicagoland Speedway/Lakeside Campgrounds operates primarily around race weekends in Joliet, while Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort offers full-hookup pads tied to the casino property. Enchanted Shores rounds out the local roster with a lake-focused setup.
Public camping in the immediate area is limited. Channahon State Park, about 15 miles south, offers rustic walk-in tent sites managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and Will County forest preserves such as McKinley Woods allow permitted tent camping but do not accommodate RVs.
Things to do around Lockport Heights
The Illinois and Michigan Canal State Trail runs directly through the area and connects more than 60 miles of flat, crushed-limestone path suited to biking, walking, and stroller pushing. Channahon State Park serves as the official trailhead and marks the confluence of the DuPage, Des Plaines, and Kankakee rivers, where kayaking and shore fishing are common weekend activities.
Families staying at Chicagoland Speedway/Lakeside Campgrounds often plan trips around NASCAR and ARCA race weekends, with Cup Series racing returning to the Joliet oval in 2026 after a seven-year absence. Hollywood Casino in Joliet offers indoor entertainment for rainy days, and the historic locks and lock tender's house at Channahon give kids a hands-on look at 19th-century canal engineering. Downtown Chicago attractions, including Navy Pier and the museum campus, sit within a one-hour drive.

How to book a campsite
Private campgrounds in the Lockport Heights area typically take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Martin Campground, Leisure Lake Membership Resort, and Enchanted Shores all handle bookings this way. Leisure Lake operates as a membership resort, so non-member availability can be limited; call ahead to confirm access for a short stay.
Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort books through the casino property, and Chicagoland Speedway/Lakeside Campgrounds opens reservations tied to the track's race calendar, often selling out months in advance for headline events. Camping at Channahon State Park is walk-in tent only, with permits obtained at the park information center rather than through an online portal. Renters should confirm rig-length limits, hookup amps, and pet policies at the time of booking, since site specs vary widely between parks.
What to expect on arrival
Expect flat terrain, gravel or grass pads, and mature tree cover at most local parks. Sites at Martin Campground are close together and near Interstate 80, so highway noise is a factor for light sleepers. Speedway and casino campgrounds are paved and level but offer minimal shade.
Cell coverage is strong across the region on all major carriers, and grocery, propane, and RV repair services are available in Joliet, Lockport, and Romeoville within a short drive. Mosquitoes and biting flies are active near the rivers and lakes from June through August, so pack repellent. Severe thunderstorms can develop quickly on summer afternoons; most parks post shelter locations, and RVers should monitor NWS Chicago alerts during watches and warnings.
