Campgrounds and RV parks near Long Creek, IL

Fishing and boating dominate trip planning. The 4,900-acre lake at Clinton Lake State Recreation Area draws anglers for crappie, catfish, bass, and walleye, with boat launches at the Mascoutin and West Side Access Areas and a fishing pier at the Spillway Access Area. A 1,000-foot sand beach is open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. At Eagle Creek State Recreational Area, Lake Shelbyville supports water skiing, sailing, and windsurfing, plus hiking and horseback riding. Weldon Springs State Recreational Area is better suited to low-key days: the 29-acre lake is ringed by fishing platforms, and shorter trails wind through woodland along Salt Creek. Sullivan Marina and Campgrounds Resort provides marina access on Lake Shelbyville, and Arrowhead Acres offers a smaller, quieter base close to Decatur.

Central Illinois has four distinct seasons, and the state-park camping calendar tracks them closely. Weldon Springs' campground is open year-round, but the shower building closes by November 1 and reopens May 1, with the exact dates weather-dependent. Eagle Creek follows the same pattern, and at Clinton Lake, showers and potable water are available from mid-April through November, weather permitting. Spring brings the wettest stretch and periodic flooding along creeks. Primitive backpack campsites at Weldon Springs are located along Salt Creek and can be flooded in spring, so calling ahead for conditions is advised. Summer is peak season for families, beaches, and boating, with holiday weekends filling first. Fall cools quickly and is prime for fishing without crowds. Winter camping is possible at most state sites, but expect closed shower houses and reduced services. Clinton Lake is open year-round except for the full week prior to the first firearm deer season, when no entry is allowed in the Mascoutin area.

Sites at the state campgrounds are typical Midwest layouts: gravel or grass pads, electric hookups on Class A sites, picnic tables, and fire rings. Clinton Lake has 17 Class AA, 277 Class A, 9 Class B/S, and 5 Class C sites, with most adaptable to tents, trailers, or motor homes, and each site equipped with a grill and picnic table. Dump stations are on-site at the main state campgrounds, and shower buildings are seasonal. Cell service is generally reliable across DeWitt, Macon, and Shelby counties. Mosquitoes and ticks can be heavy in late spring and midsummer near the lakes, so bring repellent. Expect quiet loops mid-week and busy conditions on summer weekends. Alcohol restrictions apply in specific loops: at Clinton Lake, camping loops H, I, J, and K are alcohol-free.
