Campgrounds and RV parks near Long Lake, IL

Water recreation drives most trips here. The Chain O' Lakes connects ten natural lakes via the Fox River, and boat launches, marinas, and rentals are common. There is no charge to launch boats at Chain O' Lakes State Park, and a user fee is required for all boats using the Chain, charged by the Fox Waterway Agency. Fishing turns up bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye, muskie, northern pike, crappie, and catfish. On land, Chain O' Lakes State Park has four trail systems, including trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Cyclists can also reach the Prairie Trail and McHenry County paths within a short drive. Off-water attractions near Long Lake include the Volo Auto Museum, Volo Bog State Natural Area, and the Metra commuter rail at Fox Lake for a car-free day trip into Chicago.

The private RV parks in this corridor operate on a warm-weather schedule. Fish Lake Beach runs from May 1st through October 15th, and neighboring resorts follow a similar May-to-October window. Peak demand tracks Memorial Day through Labor Day, with holiday weekends filling first at both private parks and state-park campgrounds. Chain O' Lakes State Park uses two operating windows. Summer hours run 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and take effect April 1st, terminating the last weekend in October when the park closes for all activities except hunting from the beginning of November through mid-December. Fall visitors should confirm dates directly with the park office before planning a stay. Shoulder seasons are quieter and cooler. Spring brings wildflowers and the region's wettest months, while fall delivers oak and hickory color across the park. Winter camping is limited: most private resorts are closed, though ice fishing and cross-country skiing are available on state-park land during the colder months.

Sites in this region skew toward gravel pads with mature shade trees. Fish Lake Beach offers full hookup sites with water, electric, and sewer, plus a dump station, laundry, and hot showers. State-park Class B-Premium sites at Turner Lake South are more primitive and can accommodate larger RVs without hookups. A few park rules are worth noting. All campers at Chain O' Lakes must have a permit and bring their own firewood; no one is allowed to pick up wood in the park, and alcohol is prohibited in the campgrounds. Pets must be leashed on public land. Expect mosquitoes and ticks in wooded and marshy areas from late spring through early fall, and secure food overnight, as raccoons are active after dusk. Cell coverage is generally reliable throughout the Chain O' Lakes corridor.
