Camping near Mackinaw, Illinois
Mackinaw sits in Tazewell County in central Illinois, roughly between Peoria and Bloomington-Normal. The surrounding landscape is farm country with scattered woodlots, small lakes, and easy access to Interstates 74, 155, and 39. RV travelers use the town as a base for exploring the Illinois River valley, the Bloomington-Normal metro area, and downstate destinations along historic Route 66.
The closest private campground is Kentuckiana Campground, located on Kentuckiana Road in Mackinaw itself. Timberline Campground in Goodfield sits about 20 minutes east along Interstate 74, and Kamp Komfort near Carlock lies a similar distance northeast off I-74 exit 120. Hickory Hill Campground in Secor rounds out the options to the north.
Most parks in the area are privately owned and cater heavily to seasonal campers, with a mix of full-hookup pull-through sites, tent areas, and cabin or trailer rentals. Terrain is generally flat, road access is paved, and larger rigs are accommodated at most locations, including pull-throughs up to 90 feet at Kamp Komfort.
Things to do near Mackinaw
On-site amenities carry a lot of the weight at central Illinois campgrounds. Timberline Campground has a swimming pool, private stocked fishing lake, paddle boats, mini golf, a jumping pillow, pedal carts, and organized activities on holiday weekends. Kentuckiana Campground runs live country music on Saturday nights at its on-site Opry, plus two stocked ponds, multiple playgrounds, and bocce ball. Hickory Hill has an in-ground pool open Memorial Day through Labor Day, mini golf, basketball, shuffleboard, and a recreation center.
Off-site, Comlara County Park and Evergreen Lake offer hiking and paddling to the north. The Illinois River valley, Peoria's riverfront, and Sand Ridge State Forest are within an hour's drive. Bloomington-Normal adds restaurants, museums, and Illinois State University sports.

The private campgrounds around Mackinaw run on a spring-to-fall calendar. Timberline Campground and Kamp Komfort both operate from April 1 through October 31, and Hickory Hill follows a similar April through early November window. Availability outside those months is limited, so trips in late fall through early spring require calling ahead.
Summer is peak season. Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day weekends fill quickly at family-focused parks like Kentuckiana and Timberline, both of which schedule themed weekends and events. Pools typically open Memorial Day and close after Labor Day.
Spring brings the wettest weather and softer sites; central Illinois receives its heaviest monthly rainfall in May and June, which can leave grass sites muddy. Fall is quieter and cooler, with pleasant daytime temperatures through September and into October before overnight lows drop toward freezing in November.

How to book a campsite
All five campgrounds in this area are privately operated, so reservations go directly through each park rather than a central state system. Timberline and Hickory Hill both accept online bookings through Campspot. Kamp Komfort takes reservations by phone or text through the campground office. Kentuckiana handles reservations by phone during posted office hours and requires a mailed check or money order deposit for holiday and special-event weekends.
Book holiday weekends and Saturday-night stays several weeks out during summer. Deposit and cancellation policies vary by park, so confirm the terms when booking. Several of these campgrounds offer monthly rates aimed at traveling healthcare workers and contractors on longer assignments.
What to expect on the ground
Expect classic Midwestern private-campground culture: a high share of seasonal and long-term campers, golf-cart traffic through the loops, and community events on summer weekends. Sites are often closer together than at state parks, and reviewers commonly note tight spacing at Kentuckiana, Timberline, and Hickory Hill. Full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service are standard at the larger parks, and dump stations, showers, laundry, and camp stores are available at most locations.
Cell coverage is generally usable across the area on Verizon and AT&T, though on-site Wi-Fi can be slow. Terrain is level, which helps with setup, though grass sites can hold water after heavy rain.
One local quirk to know: Hickory Hill sits next to a sportsmen's club with regular trap and skeet shooting, which can be loud on scheduled shoot days. Ask when booking if quiet is a priority.

Want bigger horizons? Chicago is about 2 hours 45 minutes northeast, and St. Louis is roughly 3 hours southwest. The Illinois River Road National Scenic Byway runs nearby and makes a stunning two-day loop.
illinoisriverroad.org/How much should I budget for fuel on a Mackinaw RV trip?
Fuel is one of the easier costs to plan for in central Illinois, where gas prices typically run a bit below the national average. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 10 miles per gallon, Class B campervans hit 16 to 20 mpg, and tow vehicles pulling travel trailers average 10 to 13 mpg. For a typical 300-mile weekend loop from Mackinaw to Starved Rock and back, budget roughly $90 to $130 in fuel for a midsize motorhome. Pro tip: fill up at the Pilot or Love's truck stops along I-74 near Morton or Goodfield, they have RV-friendly pumps with high-flow nozzles and more room to maneuver than a typical gas station.

For summer weekends, aim to reserve 2 to 3 months ahead, especially for state parks like Moraine View State Recreation Area and Sand Ridge State Forest, which book through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources reservation system at Reserve America. Private parks like Kentuckiana Campground and Timberline in Goodfield also fill quickly around the Fourth of July, Labor Day, and Mackinaw Harvest Days. Midweek stays and shoulder-season trips in May or late September are much more relaxed, you can often book just a week out. Pro tip: set up an account on the Illinois DNR reservation site before your trip, it speeds up the checkout when prime sites get released six months in advance.

Watch for spring thunderstorms and the occasional summer severe-weather warning (tornado season peaks April through June), and slow down for farm equipment in harvest season. Winter brings snow and ice from December through February, so most renters stick to April through October.
