Camping near Manhattan, Illinois
Manhattan sits in Will County, roughly 45 miles southwest of downtown Chicago and a short drive from Joliet. The village is a practical base for RV travelers who want access to metro-area attractions without paying downtown prices, and it puts several campgrounds within a 20-minute drive.
Options in the immediate area lean private and full-service. Martin Campground in Manhattan offers full hookups for 30 and 50 amp, back-in or pull-through sites, showers, and allows pets, with good cell reception on site. Nearby, Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort has back-in and pull-through sites with water and electric hookups for 30 and 50 amp service, and Chicagoland Speedway/Lakeside Campgrounds provides 30-amp electric, water hookups, a dump station, storage, a swimming pool, and firewood. Enchanted Shores and Leisure Lake Membership Resort round out the choices for travelers who want a longer stay near lakes and quiet rural roads.
Most sites in this area are open seasonally and cater to weekenders from the Chicago suburbs, so booking ahead matters during summer and race weekends.
Things to do near Manhattan
The Chicagoland Speedway is the headline draw. It is a 1.5-mile tri-oval speedway in Joliet, southwest of Chicago, that opened in 2001 and hosts NASCAR races. Race weekends bring live music, food, and tailgating across the onsite campgrounds.
Outside of race days, travelers use Manhattan as a launch point for state and county trail systems. The Illinois and Michigan Canal State Trail runs through nearby Channahon and Morris and offers flat, family-friendly biking and fishing access along the canal corridor. Kankakee River State Park, about 30 minutes south, adds paddling, hiking, and horse trails.
Joliet itself has the Joliet Area Historical Museum, Rialto Square Theatre, and a downtown dining scene. Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort adds casino gaming and dining a short shuttle ride from its RV sites.

Northern Illinois has a four-season humid continental climate with a clear camping window. Summers are long, warm, humid, and wet, while winters are freezing, snowy, and windy. The practical RV season runs from mid-April through mid-October, aligning with when most private parks turn water on and state park facilities open fully.
Summer is peak season. Weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day fill quickly at private parks in Will County, and NASCAR events at Chicagoland Speedway can sell out trackside camping months in advance. Spring and fall bring cooler nights, fewer bugs, and easier reservations, though May and June carry the wettest weather of the year and can turn grassy sites muddy.
Winter camping is limited. Most Illinois state park campsites may be reserved from May 1 through October 31, though some parks accept reservations year-round. Private parks in the Manhattan area typically shut water service off between late October and mid-April to prevent freezing.

Wonderful hosts. Extremely accommodating and great communication/support. RV was clean and well maintained. We took it out west to South Dakota, Grand Tetons and Yellowstone (though would recommend some driving experience to navigate mountain passes). Wouldn't hesitate to rent this RV again! We never thought we would enjoy traveling in an RV as much as we did. Our family of 7 had a great time and made some wonderful memories.

How to book campgrounds near Manhattan
Private parks near Manhattan, including Martin Campground, Enchanted Shores, Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort, and Leisure Lake Membership Resort, are booked directly through each property by phone or website. Hollywood Casino guests generally check in at the hotel desk rather than at the RV park itself, so plan the arrival stop accordingly.
For state park sites in the surrounding region, online reservations for Illinois Department of Natural Resources camping, cabins, group camps, and shelters are made through the ExploreMoreIL website. Campsites can be reserved for a maximum of 14 nights within a 30-day period, and reservations must be made at least three days before the arrival date.
For race weekends at Chicagoland Speedway, book campsites as soon as tickets go on sale. Trackside inventory across the onsite campgrounds moves quickly.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Manhattan is flat farmland with mixed woodlots. Roads into Martin Campground and other village-adjacent parks are paved and manageable for big rigs, and the grounds at Chicagoland Speedway/Lakeside Campgrounds are designed to accommodate larger motorhomes.
Expect basic amenities rather than resort polish at most sites. Hookups are typically water and electric, with shared dump stations rather than individual sewer at many parks. Cell coverage on major carriers is generally strong across Will County. Train noise is a factor at some Joliet-area parks, so light sleepers should pack accordingly.
Mosquitoes and ticks appear from May through September, especially after wet weeks. Bring bug spray, and check pets after walks in tall grass along canal and river trails.
