Kankakee River State Park is the dominant outdoor draw, with roughly 4,000 acres straddling an 11-mile stretch of the Kankakee River. Visitors can hike or bike a 10.5-mile trail that starts at Davis Creek and follows the river, and a separate 12-mile equestrian trail runs on the south side of the river from April through October. A 3-mile route along Rock Creek passes limestone canyons and a small waterfall. Anglers target smallmouth bass, walleye, northern pike, and channel catfish from the shoreline or from boats launched at the park. Watercraft are limited to 10 horsepower or less. Potowatomi Campground at Kankakee River State Park is generally open from April into October, which matches the schedule of the park's equestrian trail on the south side of the river. Private parks such as Kankakee South KOA Holiday and Enchanted Shores operate on longer seasons, with Enchanted Shores marketing itself as open year-round for RVs that can handle cold-weather hookups. Late spring and summer are the busiest stretch. Memorial Day through Labor Day is peak, and the KOA pool operates on that same window. Weekends in June, July, and August fill quickly at the state park, so booking well in advance is advised. Fall brings cooler nights, lighter crowds, and good river fishing. Winter camping options are limited, and the state park campground closes for the cold months while snowmobile and cross-country ski trails open when snow depth allows.

Potowatomi Campground offers 110 Class A sites in a wooded setting, all with electric hookups, along with hot showers, flush toilets, water taps, and a dump station near the entrance. Sites accommodate RVs up to about 35 feet, and the campground is divided into four loops with good tree cover and generally level pads. There is no in-campground river access, but the bike path is a short walk away. Kankakee South KOA Holiday adds full hookups, a seasonal pool, playground, game room, and cabin rentals, with pull-through sites up to 75 feet for large rigs. Enchanted Shores provides 30- and 50-amp hookups, water, sewer, laundry, and showers in a quieter, more residential setting suited to longer stays.
