Camping near Matteson, Illinois
Matteson sits in Chicago's south suburbs in Cook County, roughly 30 miles from downtown Chicago and within an easy drive of the Indiana state line. The area is served by interstates I-57 and I-80, making it a practical base for RV travelers heading into the city or continuing east into Indiana. Matteson is a village in the Chicago Southland area, close to Park Forest, Olympia Fields, and Richton Park.
Private RV parks and small family campgrounds dominate the immediate area, since most public land sits farther south and west of the metro. Emerald Trails Campground is one of the closest full-hookup options, and Cedar Lake Ministries RV Park and Cedar Lake Bible Retreat and RV Park cluster just across the state line in northwest Indiana. Enchanted Shores and Martin Campground round out the list of options within reasonable driving distance.
Expect a mix of wooded private parks, faith-affiliated grounds, and lake-oriented sites rather than large state campgrounds. Most parks stay open through the warm-weather season, with a few operating year-round for travelers passing through.
Things to do around Matteson
The pull for most RV travelers is Chicago itself: the lakefront, museums, and neighborhoods are all reachable by car or by Metra Electric commuter rail. Matteson station on the Metra Electric Main Branch sits at 215th and Main Streets, about 28 miles from the northern terminus at Millennium Station in the Loop. The nearby 211th Street/Lincoln Highway station in Olympia Fields also has a commuter parking lot on the Matteson side. Parking the rig and taking the train into the Loop avoids driving a large vehicle downtown.
Closer to camp, forest preserves in the south suburbs offer trails, fishing ponds, and picnic areas. Emerald Trails Campground has an on-site lake with fishing, a playground, and paddle boat rentals. Cedar Lake, just across the Indiana line, adds boating and beach access. Families typically split time between an urban day trip and quieter time at the campground pond or playground.

The Matteson area follows a classic Upper Midwest pattern. Summers are warm and humid with frequent thunderstorms, winters are cold and often snowy, and skies are partly cloudy year round. Peak RV season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when private parks are busiest and Chicago event calendars are full. Booking well ahead is important for July 4th weekend and other summer holidays.
Spring brings variable weather and rising rainfall, but campgrounds are quieter and mid-week sites are usually easy to secure. Fall is often the most comfortable stretch, with cooler nights, lower humidity, and colorful foliage into late October. Precipitation is spread fairly evenly across the year, with July and August the wettest months and January and February the driest.
Winter camping is limited around Matteson. A small number of private parks operate year round for self-contained rigs, but most close between late fall and early spring. Illinois state park reservable sites follow a defined season for most locations, so confirm operating dates before arrival.

Wonderful hosts. Extremely accommodating and great communication/support. RV was clean and well maintained. We took it out west to South Dakota, Grand Tetons and Yellowstone (though would recommend some driving experience to navigate mountain passes). Wouldn't hesitate to rent this RV again! We never thought we would enjoy traveling in an RV as much as we did. Our family of 7 had a great time and made some wonderful memories.

How to book campgrounds near Matteson
Private campgrounds around Matteson each use their own booking channel. Reservations at Emerald Trails Campground, Enchanted Shores, Martin Campground, and the Cedar Lake properties are typically made by phone or through the park website; call ahead to confirm big-rig clearance, site length, and hookup type.
For Illinois state park sites, reservations go through the state's ExploreMoreIL online system. IDNR camping and shelter reservations are no longer taken by mail or phone. Most campsites can be reserved from May 1 through October 31, some parks accept reservations year round, and a campsite may be reserved for a maximum of 14 nights within a 30-day period. Reservations must be made at least three days in advance, and Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day weekends require a two-night minimum.
What to expect on the ground
Sites around Matteson skew rustic and family-run rather than resort-style. Emerald Trails Campground offers RV sites with 30 and 50 amp service, pull-thru options, and personal fire rings and picnic tables at each site. Larger fifth wheels and Class A coaches should confirm site length and turning access when booking, since some interior loops are tight.
Expect wooded, shaded sites with gravel or grass pads, a mix of transient and long-term seasonal campers, and modest common amenities such as restrooms, showers, a laundry room, and a playground. Cell coverage is generally strong given the proximity to Chicago. Grocery stores, gas stations, and restaurants are within a short drive from most parks in the area, so restocking mid-trip is straightforward.

Take your pup to the off-leash dog area at Wampum Lake Woods in Thornton, walk the paved Old Plank Road Trail through Matteson, or visit Sand Ridge Nature Center in South Holland. They will level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer it, then message them with your destination for a quote. It turns a Matteson RV trip into something closer to a luxury cabin stay.

fpdcc.com/things-to-do/camping/What's the best time of year for an RV trip from Matteson?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for an RV trip from Matteson, with daytime highs averaging 70 to 84 degrees Fahrenheit and warm lake temperatures. June and September are the smart-money months: comfortable weather, smaller crowds, and lower campground rates than peak July and August. Fall foliage from late September through mid-October is genuinely spectacular at Starved Rock and along the Kankakee River. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Matteson RV rental across state lines or into Canada?

Popular RV road trips from Matteson include Indiana Dunes (60 miles east), Wisconsin Dells (200 miles north), the Mississippi River bluffs at Galena (175 miles west), and the Smoky Mountains (about 600 miles southeast). Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and insurance setup, so message the host directly before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: a Wisconsin or Michigan loop is the local favorite, plenty of lake access and easy driving from Matteson.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a motorhome rental in Matteson?
Easy to plan for. Most motorhome rentals in Matteson average 8 to 12 miles per gallon (Class C around 10 to 12 MPG, Class A closer to 7 to 9, and campervans 15 to 20). Illinois has one of the higher motor fuel taxes in the country and Cook County pump prices typically run above the national average. For a 500-mile round trip in a Class C, budget roughly $180 to $220 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up just south of Matteson off I-57 near Peotone or across the state line in Indiana, where taxes drop and you can shave real money off your tank.

Cook County Forest Preserve campgrounds like Camp Bullfrog Lake and Camp Sullivan also book fast, especially Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day weekends, which typically require a two-night minimum. camp.exploremoreil.com/What's driving an RV around Matteson actually like?
Manageable and honestly less stressful than people expect. Matteson sits about 30 miles south of downtown Chicago at the junction of I-57 and US-30, so you have wide suburban roads, clear signage, and easy highway access without dealing with Loop traffic. Heading north into Chicago in a larger motorhome is not recommended, downtown streets have low clearances and height restrictions on Lower Wacker Drive, and parking large RVs on residential streets is restricted. Stick to I-294 and I-355 to bypass the city. Pro tip: drive between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to dodge rush hour, and use delivery if you are nervous, many Matteson hosts will bring the RV straight to your campground.
idot.illinois.gov/travel-information.htmlWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Matteson?
You will find a healthy mix. Most private RV parks near Matteson, like Camp Bullfrog Lake in Willow Springs, offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, and sewer), hot showers, laundry, Wi-Fi, and dump stations. Cook County Forest Preserve sites typically have water and electric with a central dump station. Illinois state parks like Kankakee River and Starved Rock offer sites with electric and shower buildings, and you fill water and dump at a central station. Pro tip: pack a 50-to-30-amp adapter and at least 50 feet of fresh water hose, older Illinois campgrounds occasionally have farther-spaced hookups.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/camp.htmlWhat's actually inside the RVs available for rent in Matteson?
More than you would think. Most RV rentals in Matteson come fully equipped with real beds (queen or king masters in larger units), a kitchen with refrigerator, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control with air conditioning and furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a generator for off-grid power, a flat-screen TV, and some offer Wi-Fi hotspots or starter packages with outdoor chairs. Campervan rental Matteson options are more compact but still include a bed, kitchenette, and often a wet bath. Pro tip: check the listing photos and amenities list carefully, then message the host to confirm linens, towels, and kitchen items are included, most pack a starter kit so you arrive ready to camp.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Matteson%2C%20IllinoisWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about for a Matteson RV rental?
Hosts in Matteson offer a wide range of add-ons that make your trip easier: kitchen and linen kits, camping chairs, propane fire pits, bike racks, generators, kayak and SUP carriers, and even fully stocked grocery packages. Delivery and setup is the most popular add-on, with local fees usually scaling by distance from Matteson, lower for nearby suburbs and a flat rate to destinations like Indiana Dunes or Starved Rock. Pickup typically happens at the host's home with a 30 to 60-minute orientation, and most hosts offer flexible afternoon windows. Mileage policies vary, so check the listing's daily allowance. Pro tip: ask about bundled add-on discounts when you message a host.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Matteson%2C%20IllinoisHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and fully handled through the RVezy platform, no cash, no checks, no awkward exchanges with the host. You pay your total when you book using a credit or debit card, and the platform holds funds so both you and the host are protected. A separate refundable security deposit is placed on your card before pickup, the amount depends on the RV and the protection plan you chose, and it is released after the trip once the RV is returned in the agreed condition. Pro tip: take time-stamped photos of the RV's exterior, interior, and odometer at pickup and drop-off, it is the easiest way to ensure your deposit comes back fast and your Matteson RV rental wraps up smoothly.
