Camping near Mazon, Illinois
Mazon sits in Grundy County in north-central Illinois, roughly an hour southwest of Chicago and within short driving distance of the Illinois River corridor. The area is farm country dotted with small towns, canal-era history, and river parks, which makes it a practical base for RV travellers heading between Chicago, Starved Rock, and the Route 66 corridor.
Campground options near Mazon range from full-hookup private resorts to a state park campground on the Illinois River. Nearby choices include Illini State Park, with its Whitetail and Great Falls Campgrounds offering both primitive tent sites and spots with electrical hookups along the Illinois River, plus private parks such as Glenwood RV Resort, Leisure Lake Membership Resort, Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort, and Sun Retreats Millbrook.
For RV renters, the region is easy to reach via I-55 and I-80, roads are flat, and most private resorts offer paved or gravel pads with 30/50-amp service. State-run sites tend to be more rustic, with electric available at many pads but no individual water hookups.
Things to do around Mazon
Outdoor activities cluster along the Illinois River and the historic canal corridor. The Illinois and Michigan Canal State Trail stretches through Morris, offering miles of historic towpath for biking, walking, and wildlife viewing, with interpretive signs and restored canal structures along the way. Gebhard Woods State Park is a riverside park with wooded trails, canal frontage, and picnic areas that suit hikers, cyclists, and anglers, with easy access to the Illinois and Michigan Canal.
Fossil hunters have a rare draw here. The Mazon Creek Fossil Beds are internationally known as the discovery site for Illinois's state fossil, the Tully Monster, with roughly 300-million-year-old fossils that attract amateur and professional paleontologists.
For families, Mazon Centennial Park offers baseball fields, a modern playground, pavilions, a basketball hoop, and tennis and pickleball courts. River access for boaters and anglers is also available at William G. Stratton State Park in Morris.

The prime RV window in this part of Illinois runs from late spring through early fall. Most Illinois state park campsites may be reserved from May 1 through October 31, and holiday weekends fill fastest. Reservations for Memorial Day, Fourth of July when it falls on a Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or Monday, and Labor Day weekends require a two-night minimum, so plan those dates well in advance.
Summer brings warm, humid weather and the highest rainfall of the year, with thunderstorms most common from late spring into midsummer. Fall delivers cooler nights, lower humidity, and quieter campgrounds after Labor Day, though weekends around peak fall colour still book up. Spring can be muddy and cool, with lingering wet ground at riverside sites.
Winter access is limited. Some parks accept reservations year-round, so review the information about the specific campsite on the ExploreMoreIL website. Snow and ice are common from December through February, and many private resorts run reduced services or close entirely.

How to book campgrounds near Mazon
State park sites are handled through the Illinois DNR system. Online reservations for IDNR-hosted camping, cabins, group camps, and shelters are made through the ExploreMoreIL website using Visa, MasterCard, or Discover. IDNR camping and shelter reservations are no longer accepted by mail or over the phone.
Book early for weekends. Campsites can be reserved for a maximum of 14 nights within a 30-day period, and reservations must be made at least three days before the campsite is needed. Most campgrounds also have first-come, first-served sites; contact the park directly for availability of those.
Private resorts such as Glenwood RV Resort, Leisure Lake Membership Resort, Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort, and Sun Retreats Millbrook take reservations directly through their own websites or phone lines. Membership-based parks may require an affiliation for full access.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Mazon is flat and easy to navigate with a rental RV. Private resorts in the area typically provide full hookups, paved or gravel pads, laundry, and Wi-Fi, and several are family-oriented with pools and playgrounds. State park sites are more basic. Illini State Park offers both primitive tent sites and spots with electrical hookups, though water hookups are not available at individual sites, and a dump station and shared water spigots serve the campground.
Expect mosquitoes and gnats near the river in summer; bring repellent and screens. Cell coverage is generally reliable along I-55 and I-80 but can be spotty inside wooded loops.
Campground character varies. Wooded loops create natural privacy between many sites, and Whitetail at Illini tends to be calmer than the busier Great Falls area, particularly on weekdays. Book specific site numbers where possible, since river-view and interior sites differ significantly.
