Campgrounds near Murrayville, Illinois
Murrayville is a small village in Morgan County in west-central Illinois, about 11 miles south of Jacksonville and within the Jacksonville micropolitan area. The surrounding countryside is rolling farmland and oak-hickory woodland, which shapes the local camping options: a mix of private RV parks and a nearby Illinois state park rather than large federal recreation areas.
Within easy RV driving distance, campers have access to Beaver Dam State Park, a 750-acre Illinois state park in Macoupin County about seven miles southwest of Carlinville, plus private options such as Buena Vista Farms Campground, Crazy Horse Campground, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Pine Lakes. Together they cover full-hookup family resorts, quiet farm-style sites, and shaded state-park loops.
Most trips from Murrayville stay within a short drive of I-72 and I-55, which makes it easy to base an RV in one park and day-trip to Springfield, the Illinois River bluffs, or the small towns of Morgan and Macoupin counties.
Things to do near Murrayville
Fishing and paddling drive much of the local activity. Beaver Dam State Park is centered around a 59-acre lake managed by the Illinois DNR for largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, and sunfish, with a concession that typically offers bait, tackle, and small-boat rentals in season.
On land, hiking trails wind through oak-hickory woodland, and the park includes picnic areas and space for wildlife watching. Quiet walkers often see deer, wild turkeys, hawks, and woodpeckers.
Family-oriented parks such as Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Pine Lakes add pools, planned activities, and playgrounds for kids, while Crazy Horse Campground and Buena Vista Farms Campground work well as quieter overnight bases. Springfield, roughly a half-hour north, adds Lincoln historic sites for a rainy-day option.

West-central Illinois has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Using nearby Springfield as the reference station, summers are warm and humid with July highs averaging in the mid-80s Fahrenheit, and winters are cold with January lows around 21°F. Precipitation is spread through the year but peaks from late spring into summer, and thunderstorms and occasional severe weather are common from April through July.
Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable windows for RV camping. Wildflowers and turkey activity peak in April and May, while September and October bring cooler nights, lower humidity, and oak-hickory color at Beaver Dam State Park.
Summer weekends and holidays draw the heaviest demand at family resorts like Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Pine Lakes, so reserve well ahead. Winter camping options are limited: many private parks reduce services, and state-park amenities scale back once freezing weather sets in.
How to book campgrounds near Murrayville
Illinois state park sites are booked through the state's official reservation system. The Rent-A-Cabin and many campsites at Beaver Dam State Park are available for reservation using the ExploreMoreIL website. There are 40 reservable sites in the trailer camping area; all others are first-come, first-served, so arriving early on Friday improves the odds of a walk-in loop site on busy weekends.
Private parks handle their own bookings. Buena Vista Farms Campground, Crazy Horse Campground, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Pine Lakes take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Holiday weekends and Jellystone theme events fill months ahead, so lock those in first and use state-park loops as backup.
What to expect at campgrounds near Murrayville
Terrain is gentle and wooded rather than mountainous, and most sites sit under mature hardwoods. All camping at Beaver Dam State Park is situated in wooded areas with large oak and hickory trees, which provide shade throughout most of the day. The trailer camping area has electricity at each pad and a sanitary dump station, but individual sites do not have water or sewer hookups.
A shower building with flush toilets sits in the center of the trailer camping area, and shared water spigots are available around the loop. Plan to fill fresh tanks on arrival and use the dump station on the way out.
Private parks in the area generally offer full hookups, Wi-Fi, and family amenities, giving RV travelers a straightforward choice between state-park quiet and resort-style convenience.
