Campgrounds near New Berlin, Illinois
New Berlin sits in Sangamon County in central Illinois, roughly 15 miles west of Springfield and within easy reach of Interstates 55 and 72. The village is small and rural, so most RV travellers base themselves at private parks along the Springfield corridor and use New Berlin as a quieter approach to the state capital region.
The closest full-service options are Double J Campground and RV Park in Chatham and Crazy Horse Campground, both within a short drive. Springfield KOA Journey sits on the east side of the metro and works well for travellers arriving from I-55. Buena Vista Farms Campground offers a more rustic, agricultural setting for those looking to slow down.
Sites near Springfield tend to be flat, grassy, and suitable for larger rigs, with full or partial hookups available at most private parks. Public options exist at nearby state park lands and the Illinois State Fairgrounds, giving families a mix of amenities to choose from within a 30-minute radius.
Things to do near New Berlin
Most trips center on Springfield's Lincoln sites: the Lincoln Home National Historic Site, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, the Old State Capitol, and Lincoln's Tomb at Oak Ridge Cemetery. All are within a compact downtown area that is easy to visit as a half-day loop.
Outdoor time centers on Sangchris Lake State Park east of Springfield, which offers boating, fishing for bass, bluegill, crappie, and catfish, hiking, and a public archery range. Lake Springfield adds beach access and paved trails, while Lincoln Memorial Garden and Nature Center has quiet wooded walks suitable for kids.
Families staying at Double J Campground and RV Park can use on-site amenities on rainy afternoons. Late-summer visitors often plan around the Illinois State Fair in August, held at the fairgrounds in Springfield.

Central Illinois has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. The main RV window runs from April through October, when private parks are fully open and most state park campgrounds are on their standard reservation calendar. At Sangchris Lake State Park, Deer Run Campground closes from mid-January through the end of March, while Hickory Point Campground remains open with water access and showers closed from November through March.
Summer is the busiest stretch. June, July, and August bring warm, humid days, occasional thunderstorms, and peak demand at Springfield-area parks, especially around the Illinois State Fair in mid-August. Book several weeks ahead for weekend arrivals.
Spring and fall are quieter and often more comfortable for touring the Lincoln sites, with cooler nights and lower humidity. Winter camping is limited: many private parks close or reduce services, and state park facilities operate with reduced water access.
How to book campgrounds near New Berlin
State park campsites at Sangchris Lake are reserved online through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources system at ExploreMoreIL. IDNR no longer accepts phone or mail reservations. Sites can be booked up to 180 days in advance and must be reserved at least three days before arrival, with a 14-night maximum stay within a 30-day period. Some sites at Hickory Point Campground remain first come, first served, so arriving early on a Friday improves the odds of a walk-up spot.
Private parks such as Double J Campground and RV Park, Crazy Horse Campground, Springfield KOA Journey, and Buena Vista Farms Campground each take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. For State Fair week and holiday weekends, book two to three months in advance. For shoulder-season midweek stays, a few days of lead time is usually enough.
What to expect
The landscape around New Berlin is flat farmland with grain elevators, county roads, and small towns. Sites at private parks are typically level and grassy or gravel, with 30 and 50 amp service common and full hookups available at the larger properties. Cell coverage is generally reliable along the I-55 and I-72 corridors.
Sangchris Lake State Park has two campgrounds with electric hookups at Class A sites, a sanitary dump station in each campground, and a shower building located in the Hickory Point Campground. Primitive Class C sites are walk-in and vehicle-free.
Expect mosquitoes in summer near the lakes, occasional severe thunderstorms and tornado watches from spring through early fall, and heavy dew on humid mornings. Bring leveling blocks for older private-park sites, and a hose long enough to reach offset water hookups.
