Campgrounds near Newark, Illinois
Newark sits in Kendall County along the Fox River corridor in northern Illinois, roughly 60 miles southwest of downtown Chicago and within easy reach of Starved Rock country. The area blends farmland, river bluffs, and small-town main streets, making it a practical base for RV travelers who want quiet nights but still want Chicago-area attractions within a short drive.
Private RV resorts dominate the immediate area. Mallard Bend RV Resort, Sun Retreats Millbrook, Hi-Tide Recreation, and Fox Bluff RV Resort sit along or near the Fox River, while Jellystone Park of Chicago serves families with cabins, pools, and organized activities. Full-hookup sites, pull-throughs, and big-rig access are common at these resorts.
Public camping is available at nearby Illinois state parks and conservation areas, including Starved Rock and Silver Springs. State-run sites tend to be more rustic than the private resorts and follow different reservation rules, so RV renters should confirm hookup availability and rig-length limits before booking.
Things to do near Newark
The Fox River is the region's anchor. Paddling, tubing, and shoreline fishing are common day trips, and several public access points sit within a short drive of local campgrounds. Silver Springs State Fish and Wildlife Area offers hiking, fishing lakes, and picnicking on public land close to town.
Starved Rock State Park, about 30 minutes southwest, is the marquee draw. Established in 1911, the park features 18 sandstone canyons with rain-fed and seasonal waterfalls, along with over 13 miles of trails and Illinois River overlooks. Matthiessen State Park sits next door with quieter trails and additional waterfalls.
Families staying at Jellystone Park of Chicago typically build a trip around on-site pools, mini golf, and themed weekends, while resorts along the Fox River tend to skew toward fishing, boating, and lower-key riverside stays.

Northern Illinois has four distinct seasons, and camping demand tracks them closely. Most private RV resorts near Newark operate from spring through late fall, with a few offering limited winter stays. Most Illinois state park campsites accept reservations from May 1 through October 31, though some parks accept reservations year-round, so confirm the specific park before planning a shoulder-season trip.
Summer is peak season. Weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day book fastest, and Illinois DNR requires a two-night minimum on Memorial Day, Labor Day, and qualifying Fourth of July weekends. Fox River resorts fill early for holiday weeks.
Spring brings mud, high water, and dramatic canyon waterfalls at Starved Rock, but also cool nights and unpredictable storms. Fall delivers reliable weather, oak and maple color through October, and lighter crowds midweek. Winter camping is limited: expect frozen hookups, closed loops, and short daylight.

Private campgrounds around Newark, including Mallard Bend RV Resort, Sun Retreats Millbrook, Hi-Tide Recreation, Fox Bluff RV Resort, and Jellystone Park of Chicago, each take reservations directly through their own websites or front desks. Book summer weekends and holidays several months out, especially for pull-through and waterfront sites.
For Illinois state parks, online reservations for IDNR-hosted camping, cabins, group camps, and shelters are made through the ExploreMoreIL website. IDNR camping and shelter reservations are no longer taken by mail or phone. Most campgrounds also hold first-come, first-served sites, so contact the park directly for availability.
What to expect
Roads into the Newark area are flat and rural, with easy access from I-80, I-88, and US-34. Most local RV resorts can handle larger Class A and fifth-wheel rigs, but a few riverside sites have tight interior loops and low branches, so confirm site dimensions when booking a bigger unit.
Expect full hookups, Wi-Fi of varying quality, and cell coverage that is generally solid across the major carriers. Grocery, propane, and dump-station services are available in Yorkville, Sandwich, and Ottawa within a short drive.
Mosquitoes and ticks are active from late spring through early fall, especially near the Fox River. Summer thunderstorms can be sharp and fast-moving, so plan awning use accordingly and watch for tornado watches during peak season.
