Campgrounds near Normal, Illinois
Normal sits in east-central Illinois alongside Bloomington, with Interstates 74, 55, and 39 converging nearby. That location makes it a practical base for RV travelers touring the corn-belt prairie, with several campgrounds within a short drive of town.
The closest state-run option is Moraine View State Recreation Area near Le Roy, about twenty minutes east of Bloomington-Normal off I-74. The 1,687-acre park surrounds a 158-acre lake (Dawson Lake) and includes Gander Bay campground plus the Timberline Ridge equestrian sites. Private options in the surrounding area include Kamp Komfort, Hickory Hill Campground, Timberline Campground, and Timberline Campground Goodfield, which sits between Bloomington and Peoria.
Moraine View provides 137 Class A trailer campsites with electricity and a sanitary station, suitable for RVs and trailers. Travelers with larger fifth wheels should confirm site dimensions before booking, since some interior loops have tighter constraints.
Things to do near Normal
Dawson Lake at Moraine View is the main draw for on-water recreation. The lake supports fishing, kayaking, and small-boat use, and a concession stand near the boat dock offers dock and boat rental, fishing tackle, bait, refreshments, and various supplies. Hiking, picnic shelters, playgrounds, and a swimming beach round out the day-use options.
The park hosts seasonal programs and family activities during warmer months. Equestrian visitors can trailer horses to Timberline Ridge horse camp, which has 30 Class A campsites with water, electricity, and hitching racks.
In town, Normal offers Illinois State University, the Children's Discovery Museum, and the Constitution Trail for biking and walking. Uptown Normal has restaurants and groceries within a short drive of most area campgrounds.

The main camping season at Moraine View lines up with when most private parks in the area are in full operation, roughly mid-spring through late fall. Shower buildings at the state park are closed by November 1 and reopen May 1, with the schedule shifting earlier or later depending on weather.
Off-season campers should plan for winterized facilities and self-contained operation. Snow and ice can cause access disruptions in deep winter, so calling the park office before arrival is standard practice during that period.
Spring brings the wettest stretch of the year in central Illinois, with May and June the wettest months of the year, and heavy thunderstorm activity. Peak tornado activity occurs between April and June, so RVers should monitor severe-weather alerts during that window. Summer weekends and holidays fill quickly at reservable lakeside sites, while fall offers cooler nights, drier air, and lower demand before shower houses close for the season.

Greg was great! The RV was delivered in a timely fashion and Greg walked me through its various functions and amenities. I was able to travel with my family (5 of us in all) from Central Illinois to Estes Park, Colorado. We were able to step out of our RV every morning to the sight of mountains surrounding us, and the RV handled very well on the mountain roads! Thanks, Greg! My family and I were able to make some terrific memories!

How to book campgrounds near Normal
Sites at Moraine View are booked through the ExploreMoreIL reservation system, run by the Illinois DNR. The Gander Bay campground contains 102 sites, which can be reserved in advance; the remaining Class A sites in the park are held for first-come, first-served use. Waterfront sites are the most competitive and should be locked in early for summer weekends.
During the off-season, campers at Gander Bay can typically claim an open site on a first-come basis. Private parks near Normal, including Kamp Komfort, Hickory Hill Campground, Timberline Campground, and Timberline Campground Goodfield, take reservations directly through the operator.
Cell service inside the state park can be inconsistent, so trip details and confirmations should be sorted before leaving home.
What to expect
Expect Midwestern prairie and moraine terrain: gentle ridges, mixed oak and hickory woods, and open lake shoreline. The park sits atop a moraine, a low, rolling ridge left by a vanished ice sheet; moraines are common post-glacial features across the Midwest. Roads into Moraine View are well maintained and manageable for typical RV rigs, though longer trailers should check turning radius on the interior loops.
Gander Bay sites are mostly back-in with electric hookups. Water is available in several locations in the campground rather than at individual sites, so RVers should fill fresh tanks before arrival. A sanitary dump station is available on site. Sites can feel close together in the electric loops during peak weekends, and privacy is limited.
Alcohol is prohibited in all campgrounds at Moraine View. Pets are welcome on leash, and quiet hours are enforced after 10 PM.

Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and protection plan, so confirm with the host through RVezy messaging before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental due to insurance limitations. Pro tip: if you are eyeing a multi-state loop, message the host upfront with your route, most are happy to approve well-planned trips and may even share favorite stops along the way.
