Campgrounds near North Chicago
North Chicago sits on the Lake Michigan shoreline in Lake County, roughly an hour north of downtown Chicago and about the same distance south of Milwaukee. The immediate area offers a mix of state-run lakeshore camping and private RV resorts on the inland lake systems to the west, giving renters options for beach access, fishing, or full-hookup sites within a short drive of the city.
The closest public option is Illinois Beach State Park, a 4,160-acre park stretching more than six miles along the Lake Michigan shoreline. West of North Chicago, the Chain O' Lakes region draws RVers to private resorts like Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort, Grass Lake Marina and RV Park, and Happy Acres Kampground, while Fox River Recreation sits along the Fox River corridor that links the chain.
Most campgrounds in this area are seasonal, running roughly from mid-spring through late fall. Peak demand runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and lakeside sites at both public parks and private resorts tend to fill weeks in advance for summer weekends.
Things to do near North Chicago
The Lake Michigan shoreline is the main draw. Illinois Beach State Park offers a swimming beach, dune and swale hiking trails, fishing, and access to the Zion Bike Trail, along with a camp store that operates seasonally.
Inland, the Chain O' Lakes system links ten natural lakes through the Fox River, forming the largest concentration of natural lakes in Illinois. Boating, kayaking, and fishing are the primary activities, with rentals available at several marinas. Grass Lake Marina and RV Park and Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort put renters directly on the water, and Fox River Recreation sits along the river corridor.
Family-friendly attractions within a short drive include Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, North Point Marina in Winthrop Harbor, and the historic downtowns of Antioch and Fox Lake. Cross-country skiing and ice fishing are available on the chain in winter.

The Illinois Beach State Park campground is open from April 1 through November 15, and closed from January through March. Private resorts on the Chain O' Lakes generally open in mid to late April and close in October, mirroring the boating and fishing season.
Summer is peak season. July and August draw the heaviest traffic, and reservations at Illinois Beach State Park are accepted for stays from May 1 through September 30 and can be booked up to 180 days in advance through ExploreMoreIL. Weekend sites at both public and private campgrounds routinely fill weeks out, and unreserved state park sites are available first-come, first-served.
Spring and early fall are quieter. April and May bring cool nights, chilly lake winds, and highs in the fifties and sixties, but campgrounds are less crowded. September and October offer warm days, cool evenings, and fall color along the Fox River. Winter closes most campgrounds entirely, though day-use trails at the state parks remain open for hiking, ice fishing, and cross-country skiing.

Very very helpful to have a sizable fridge and freezer. Microwave a big plus. Solar panels and Shore Power allowed us to use comfy air-connditioning. Thanks.

How to book near North Chicago
Illinois Beach State Park uses the state's ExploreMoreIL reservation system. Reservations are accepted for stays from May 1 through September 30 and can be made up to 180 days in advance. The campground offers 241 Class A Premium sites with electric hookups, access to showers, and a central dump station. Outside the reservable window, sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Chain O' Lakes State Park, about 45 minutes west, also books through ExploreMoreIL. It has Class A Premium electric loops at Honeysuckle Hollow and Fox Den plus Class B non-electric areas at Turner Lake South, Prairie View, and Mud Lake East.
Private resorts such as Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort, Grass Lake Marina and RV Park, Happy Acres Kampground, and Fox River Recreation book directly through their own websites or by phone. For summer weekends and holidays, reserving two to three months out is recommended, and full-hookup sites should be booked as early as possible.
What to expect on site
State park sites in this region are Class A Premium with electric service and access to shared water, but no individual sewer connections. A central dump station handles waste, and shower buildings are within walking distance of most loops. Alcohol is prohibited in the campgrounds at both Illinois Beach and Chain O' Lakes State Parks, so renters should plan accordingly.
Private resorts on the Chain O' Lakes generally offer more amenities, including full hookups, boat slips or launches, camp stores, pools, and family programming. Sites at Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort and Grass Lake Marina and RV Park sit directly on the water.
Cell coverage is generally reliable throughout Lake County. Mosquitoes and biting flies can be heavy near the marshes and lake edges in early summer, so bug spray is essential. Big rigs should confirm site length before booking, as some older loops at both public and private grounds have tight interior roads.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near North Chicago, IL
How much does it cost to rent an RV in North Chicago, IL?
Renting an RV in North Chicago is more affordable than most people expect, with travel trailers typically starting around $90 to $150 per night and motorhomes ranging from $175 to $325 per night on RVezy. Prices peak in June through August when Lake Michigan beach trips and Six Flags Great America visits are at their busiest, so booking in May or September often unlocks the best value. For a cheap RV rental in North Chicago, filter by travel trailers or older Class C units and consider midweek pickups, which many hosts discount. Pro tip: hosts based right in Lake County often waive delivery fees if you're staying nearby at Illinois Beach State Park.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.illinoisbeach.htmlWhat license do I need to rent an RV in North Chicago?
Good news: a standard driver's license is all you need for an RV rental in North Chicago, no Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement required, even for larger Class A motorhomes. You'll just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home license, and an International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended if your license isn't in English. Once you're verified, your host handles the rest with a full walkthrough at pickup.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a North Chicago RV trip?
Absolutely, plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rentals in North Chicago, and you can find them in seconds by toggling the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy. Lake County is a great region for traveling with dogs: Illinois Beach State Park has a dedicated dog beach on Lake Michigan, Independence Grove Forest Preserve in Libertyville has leashed-dog trails, and Van Patten Woods is a quick 15-minute drive with miles of paw-friendly paths. Just message your host before booking to confirm pet fees and any size or breed notes, then pack a bed, bowls, and waste bags. Many hosts even leave a welcome treat for your four-legged co-pilot.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.illinoisbeach.htmlCan the RV be delivered to me in North Chicago?
Yes, RV delivery in North Chicago is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially if you're flying into O'Hare or Midway or you'd rather skip city driving entirely. Many local hosts will deliver and set up the RV at Illinois Beach State Park, Chain O' Lakes State Park, KOA Chicago Northwest, or even a private driveway, then walk you through every system before they leave. To find it fast, just use the Delivery filter when searching. Delivery fees usually run by the mile, and some hosts include free delivery within Lake County. It's the easiest path for a first-time renter, no backing into tight spots required.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.illinoisbeach.htmlHow far can I drive on a North Chicago RV trip?
You can go a lot further than you'd think. Door County, Wisconsin, is a beautiful 230-mile haul if you've got a week. Each RVezy host sets their own mileage policy, with many offering generous daily allowances and some providing RV rentals with unlimited mileage. Just check the listing details, and message the host if you're planning a bigger loop, they're usually flexible for longer bookings.

For a longer hop, Wisconsin State Fair RV Park in Milwaukee offers 30/50-amp full hookups. Pro tip: Illinois Beach books up fast for summer weekends, so reserve as soon as your dates are locked in.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.chainolakes.htmlWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from North Chicago?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for RV camping in North Chicago, with daytime highs from 70 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit and Lake Michigan warm enough for a swim by July. June and September are the goldilocks months: smaller crowds, lower bug counts, and gorgeous lakeshore sunsets. Fall colors peak in mid-October across Lake County forest preserves, making it a magical (and cheaper) shoulder season. Winter RVing is possible with a four-season rig and shore power, but most campgrounds close from November through April. Local insider tip: aim for a weekday in early September, you'll have Illinois Beach almost to yourself.

You're never alone out there. rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my North Chicago RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is totally fine, and an RV road trip from North Chicago into Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, or beyond is one of the most popular reasons people book here. Top runs include Door County (230 miles), the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Indiana Dunes National Park (90 miles), and the Wisconsin Dells. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed but requires written approval from your host first, since insurance and protection coverage must be confirmed. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: message your host with your full itinerary before booking, most are excited to help you plan the perfect multi-state loop.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I expect?
Plan smart and fuel won't derail your trip. Class C motorhomes around North Chicago typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (mpg), Class A rigs run 6 to 10 mpg, and a travel trailer pulled behind your own truck depends on your tow vehicle. Regular gas in the Chicago metro recently averaged about $3.60 to $3.90 per gallon, with diesel slightly higher. For a 300-mile round trip to the Wisconsin Dells in a Class C, budget roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Local tip: gas is usually 30 to 50 cents per gallon cheaper just over the Wisconsin border in Kenosha, so plan to top off there on the way home.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near North Chicago?
Book early and you'll have your pick of the best sites. Illinois state parks like Illinois Beach and Chain O' Lakes use Reserve America's Camp Illinois system and open reservations six months ahead, with prime summer weekends often selling out the day they release. Private parks like KOA Chicago Northwest and Wisconsin State Fair RV Park typically accept bookings 12 months in advance. For Memorial Day, July 4th, or Labor Day weekends, aim to book at least 90 days out. Midweek and shoulder-season trips often have availability just a few days ahead. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for exactly 6 months before your target date to snag premium lakefront sites.
camp.exploremoreil.com/What's driving an RV around North Chicago actually like?
It's very manageable, especially if you avoid downtown Chicago at rush hour. North Chicago itself sits along I-94 with wide suburban roads, big-box parking lots, and easy access to Highway 41 and the Tri-State Tollway (I-294). Watch for the 13-foot, 6-inch clearance on most overpasses and avoid Lake Shore Drive in the city, which has low-clearance bridges. Winter brings snow and ice from December through March, so most renters stick to the warmer months. If city driving feels intimidating, book a host with delivery so the RV arrives at your campsite already parked. Insider tip: use the Tollway's I-PASS or pay online within 14 days to avoid violation fees.
illinoistollway.com/tolling-informationWhat amenities do campgrounds near North Chicago typically offer?
Most RV parks near North Chicago come well-equipped. At Illinois Beach State Park you'll find electric hookups, a dump station, potable water fill, hot showers, and flush toilets. Chain O' Lakes State Park offers electric sites plus a dump station and water fill near the entrance. KOA Chicago Northwest steps it up with full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50-amp electric), Wi-Fi, laundry, a pool, and a camp store. For dumping between trips, the Love's Travel Stop in Wadsworth and the Pilot in Pleasant Prairie both offer dump and freshwater fill for a small fee. Pro tip: arrive at state parks with a full water tank since fill stations can have lines on summer Friday afternoons.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.illinoisbeach.htmlWhat features and amenities come with a typical North Chicago RV rental?
You'll feel right at home. A typical motorhome rental in North Chicago sleeps 4 to 8 people and comes with a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with a toilet and shower, a dinette that converts to a bed, climate control with air conditioning and a furnace, and seatbelts for everyone traveling. Most RVs include a TV, and many hosts offer Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor speakers, or solar setups as add-ons. A campervan rental in North Chicago is a great option for couples who want simpler driving and easier parking. Pro tip: check each listing's amenities list and message the host if you need something specific like a king bed, dog crate, or kid-friendly setup.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=North%20Chicago%2C%20IllinoisWhat add-ons and pickup options should I plan for?
Hosts make it easy to customize your family RV trip in North Chicago. Common add-ons include linens and towel packages, kitchen kits, camp chairs, outdoor grills, bike racks, generators, kayaks, and Wi-Fi hotspots, usually $10 to $50 each. Mileage policies vary: some listings include 100 to 150 free miles per day, while others advertise unlimited mileage, perfect for longer Wisconsin or Michigan loops. Pickup is typically at the host's home in Lake County, but many offer delivery to campgrounds, airports, or your driveway. Pro tip: confirm pickup and drop-off times in writing through the RVezy message thread, and ask about late return flexibility if you're planning a Sunday-evening return after a long drive.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=North%20Chicago%2C%20IllinoisHow do payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book an RV rental in North Chicago through RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit card, no cash or off-platform transfers needed. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the rig) to cover incidentals like minor damage. Assuming all goes well, it's released back to you shortly after the trip ends. To keep things smooth, document the RV's condition with photos at pickup and drop-off, return it with the same fuel level, and stay within the agreed mileage. Pro tip: keep all communication inside the RVezy app so everything is timestamped and protected.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre RV rentals available in winter near North Chicago?
Yes, winter rentals are possible and can be a one-of-a-kind adventure, though most renters stick to April through October. North Chicago winters are cold and snowy, with January lows in the low 20s Fahrenheit and frequent lake-effect snow, so you'll want a four-season RV with heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and reliable propane heat. If you're booking November through March, plan to stay at a campground with shore power and skip boondocking. Winter can be perfect for cozy weekends near Chain O' Lakes for ice fishing or holiday events around Lake County. Pro tip: ask your host directly whether their RV is winterized for active use, not just storage.
