Campgrounds and RV parks near North Pekin, IL

The Illinois River corridor drives most trip planning. Sankoty Lakes offers on-water recreation including boating, kayaking, birdwatching, and fly fishing, plus an on-site restaurant. The site's controlled-cell wetlands attract thousands of migratory waterfowl every year. Sand Ridge State Forest covers over seven thousand acres of oak-hickory forests and pine plantations, with an extensive network of trails for hikers, equestrian riders, and snowmobilers, plus a shooting range for hand-trap and archery. The orange trail, a 5-mile loop, starts at Pine Camp and passes through sandy forest with prickly pear cactus. Jubilee College State Park has over 40 miles of multi-use trails maintained by volunteer user groups, plus a preserved frontier college site. Kentuckiana Campground is family-focused, with fishing ponds and a Saturday-night country-music venue.

Central Illinois runs a classic four-season pattern. Peoria experiences a humid continental climate, marked by a very large seasonal temperature contrast. Summers are warm, while winters are cold and bring regular snowfall. The area is fairly wet, with precipitation spread relatively evenly throughout the year, though spring tends to be wetter and winter is the driest season. Late spring through early fall is prime RV season. Most public campgrounds run a defined operating window. Jubilee College campground facilities are open from April 15 to November 1, and the Coyote Cove loop in the main camping area is open to winter camping with Class B sites with electric and primitive privies. Sand Ridge State Forest sites are typically open year-round, but water pumps are limited outside the warm months. Summer brings the busiest weekends and peak humidity, while May and September deliver mild days, fewer bugs, and easier reservations. The young trees planted across the Sankoty Lakes grounds have not matured, which makes spring and fall visits more comfortable than midsummer.

Hookup expectations vary widely across the area. Sankoty Lakes RV sites are level, with 20, 30, and 50 amp electric service, water, and sewer on concrete pads. Kentuckiana Campground has 50-amp electric, water, and sewer hookups and accommodates larger rigs. State sites are more rustic. Jubilee College facilities include a shower building with flush toilets, a trailer dump station, graveled pads and grills, water hydrants, and primitive toilets, with Class A electric and Class C sites with showers. Sand Ridge campgrounds feature vault toilets and water pumps for filling containers, each site includes a fireplace with a grill pad, and while primarily designed for tent camping, some sites can accommodate small RVs, though there are no electric or water hookups (generators are allowed). Cell coverage has tested well enough for streaming at Sankoty Lakes, and is generally solid near the river corridor and thinner inside the state forest.
