Campgrounds near Northfield, Illinois
Northfield sits on Chicago's North Shore, roughly 20 miles north of downtown and inland from Lake Michigan. There are no campgrounds in the village itself, so RV travelers base themselves at parks in Lake and McHenry counties to the north and northwest, then day-trip into the North Shore suburbs.
The closest options range from private full-hookup resorts to state-park campgrounds. Illinois Beach State Park stretches 6.5 miles along the shores of Lake Michigan and features a South Unit campground with 241 Class A Premium sites with electricity, showers and sanitary facilities. Further west, Chain O' Lakes State Park sits in the northeastern corner of Illinois in McHenry and Lake counties, with a large concentration of natural lakes and extensive shoreline. Turner Lake South - Chain O Lakes State Park is one of its camping loops.
Private options fill in the gaps. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in Volo, Grass Lake Marina and RV Park on the Chain O'Lakes, and Pingala RV Resort give renters full-hookup access closer to boating water than the state sites offer.
Things to do near Northfield
Water is the main draw. Chain O Lakes State Park is a water-oriented recreation area with opportunities for boaters, anglers and skiers, sitting at the heart of Illinois' largest concentration of natural lakes. Popular fish in the Chain O' Lakes include bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, muskie, northern pike, bullhead, catfish, and yellow and white bass. Boat and canoe rentals are available through the park concessionaire.
Along Lake Michigan, Illinois Beach State Park offers swimming, hiking and biking on sandy shoreline trails. Swimming is available in both the north and south units, though there are no lifeguards on duty, so campers should take precautions.
Families staying at private resorts like Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort get pool time, beach swimming, boat rentals and organized activities in addition to lake access. Day trips into Northfield, Evanston, and downtown Chicago are straightforward via I-94 or the Metra commuter rail.

Summer is the region's core RV season. Illinois Beach State Park gets very busy in July and August, so reservations should be made early. Holiday weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day book out earliest across both public and private campgrounds.
Shoulder seasons are quieter but shorter. Spring brings less traffic and congestion, with temperatures still mild but breezy, highs in the 50s and 60s Fahrenheit and lows in the upper 30s to mid-40s. Fall brings cooler nights and fewer crowds through September and October before most campgrounds close.
Winter access is limited. The Illinois Beach campground is closed during the winter months, with reservations at the park accepted only for stays from May 1 through September 30. Chain O' Lakes is closed for most activities from early November through mid-December, when hunting is by registration only. Private resorts like Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort shut down entirely for the off-season.

How to book campgrounds near Northfield
Illinois state parks use a single online system. Online reservations for all Illinois Department of Natural Resources-hosted camping, cabins, group camps, and shelters are made through the ExploreMoreIL website, paying by Visa, MasterCard or Discover. IDNR reservations are no longer taken by mail or phone. Reservations at Illinois Beach can be made up to six months in advance and up to three days prior to arrival, and are only accepted for stays from May 1 through September 30.
Campsites can be reserved for a maximum of 14 nights within a 30-day period. Memorial Day, Fourth of July when it falls on a Friday through Monday, and Labor Day weekends require a two-night minimum.
Private parks book directly. Call or use each resort's own reservation page for Pingala RV Resort, Grass Lake Marina and RV Park, and Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort.
What to expect on the ground
State-park sites are functional, not resort-style. Campsites at Illinois Beach do not have individual water or sewer hookups, but there are water hydrants throughout the campground and a dump station near the entrance. Sites have electrical connections and access to showers and sanitary facilities. At Chain O' Lakes, Turner Lake South - Chain O Lakes State Park sits within the park's broader loop system.
The maximum length of stay is 14 camping nights within any 30-day period, and the campground gates are locked from 10pm to 8am, during which time campers may leave the campground but not enter. Campers should bring their own firewood, and alcohol is prohibited in the campgrounds.
Private resorts offer full hookups, pools, and family programming, and generally accommodate larger rigs with less restrictive quiet-hour rules than the state parks.

In the Chicago North Shore area, travel trailers typically run $90 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $300, and larger Class A coaches sit at $300 to $500. Add-ons like generators, camp chairs, or kitchen kits usually add $10 to $50 per night. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Northfield%2C%20IllinoisWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Northfield, IL?
Good news: for most RVs you rent on RVezy in Northfield, your regular Class D driver's license is all you need. Illinois ties license class to vehicle weight, but the vast majority of rentals on the platform (campervans, travel trailers, and Class C motorhomes under 16,000 pounds GVWR) fall within standard license limits. Out-of-state visitors are covered by their home-state license, and international travelers should bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with their home license. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and ID is verified inside the booking flow. No CDL or special endorsement is required for typical rentals.

Yes, and this is one of the best parts about booking through RVezy. Every rent an RV in Northfield booking automatically includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you're covered from the moment you pull out of the driveway. During checkout you choose your protection plan level, which sets your deductible and coverage limits to fit your trip. Hosts don't choose your coverage, you do, so there are no awkward negotiations and no surprises.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Northfield RV rental?
RVezy applies a standardized cancellation policy to every booking on the platform, so terms are consistent across hosts. Refund amounts depend on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date, and special circumstances like severe weather or natural disasters may be considered. Unlike some other marketplaces, hosts in Northfield don't set their own cancellation rules, RVezy does, which means predictable terms whether you book a campervan rental Northfield host or a Class A. If a host cancels on you, RVezy helps with a refund or rebooking. Book early to lock in your preferred RV with flexibility built in.

Yes, plenty of hosts welcome four-legged co-pilots. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see pet-friendly RV rental Northfield options, then message the host to confirm any pet fees (often $25 to $75 per trip). Yes, RV delivery Northfield is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game-changer if you're new to RVing or short on driveway space. Many hosts deliver to homes in Northfield, Winnetka, Glenview, or Wilmette, or drive the rig straight to your campground at places like Illinois Beach State Park or Chain O'Lakes State Park. Delivery fees typically run a few dollars per mile from the host's location. Hosts handle setup, level the RV, connect hookups, and walk you through every system. Ask about delivery when messaging hosts, especially for first-timers, where arrival setup saves real time.

Starved Rock State Park (under 2 hours) is the regional crown jewel with waterfalls and canyons, so book months ahead. For a closer private option, KOA Chicago Northwest in Union (about 1 hour) is the closest KOA to Chicago. Reserve Illinois state park sites through the Camp Illinois portal.
camp.exploremoreil.com/When is the best time to rent an RV in Northfield, IL?
Late May through mid-October is prime season for RV camping Northfield, with June and September often the sweet spots. Summer highs in the Chicago area average in the low 80s Fahrenheit with warm nights perfect for campfires, while September brings cooler days, fewer mosquitoes, and early fall color along Lake Michigan. July and August are busiest and priciest thanks to school break, so book 8 to 12 weeks ahead. Spring shoulder season (late April to May) is quieter and cheaper if you don't mind cool nights. Winters here are genuinely cold, so most local RV trips wind down by early November.
weather.gov/lot/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You're going to do great, and you're not alone. Many RVezy guests are first-time renters, and the platform is built around that. Every host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering propane, water systems, slide-outs, generator, and driving tips specific to that rig. You can also message your host before, during, or after the trip with questions. For your first time renting an RV near Northfield, consider a Class C motorhome (drives like a large van) or a travel trailer delivered and set up for you. Try a short shakedown trip to Illinois Beach or Chain O'Lakes before a longer haul. RVezy customer support is available to help if you need it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360003363273-RentersWhat happens if my RV breaks down during the trip?
Take a deep breath, you're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire, dead battery, or mechanical issue is a phone call away from being solved. Help can reach you along common Northfield-area routes including I-94, I-90, and I-294, and out toward Starved Rock or Wisconsin. You can also contact your host directly through the RVezy app, since they know their RV best and can often troubleshoot small issues by phone. RVezy customer support is available to assist as well. Snap photos at pickup so any pre-existing dings are documented and you're never on the hook for prior wear.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Northfield RV rental to Wisconsin, Indiana, or across the Canadian border?
Yes to Wisconsin and Indiana, which makes Northfield an excellent launch pad for a multi-state RV road trip from Northfield. Lake Geneva, Door County, the Wisconsin Dells, and Indiana Dunes are favorite loops. Cross-state travel within the U.S. is allowed and your protection plan continues to apply. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and your protection plan, so confirm with the host before booking. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Many North Shore renters plan a 5-day Wisconsin loop through Lake Geneva, Madison, and the Dells.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Northfield RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item after the rental itself, and it's easy to plan for. Class C motorhomes in the Chicago area average 8 to 12 miles per gallon, travel trailers towed by a half-ton truck get 10 to 14 mpg, and Class B campervans can reach 16 to 20 mpg. Illinois fuel prices typically run a bit above the national average due to state fuel taxes. For a 4-day, 400-mile loop to Starved Rock and back in a Class C, budget roughly $150 to $225 in fuel depending on current prices. If your route crosses state lines, fuel in Indiana or Wisconsin is often cheaper than in Illinois.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Northfield?
Earlier is better, especially for Illinois state parks. Reservations for parks like Illinois Beach, Chain O'Lakes, and Starved Rock open up to six months in advance through the Camp Illinois reservation system, and the most popular weekends (Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day) can sell out quickly. Private parks like KOA Chicago Northwest book up 2 to 3 months ahead for summer weekends. Midweek and shoulder-season trips are much easier, and you can often snag a site a week or two out. Book your RV on RVezy first, then your campground, since popular Class C and travel trailer rentals go fast for prime weekends.
camp.exploremoreil.com/What are driving conditions like around Northfield and Chicago?
Northfield is a quiet North Shore village, but you're about 20 miles north of downtown Chicago, so plan around traffic. Edens Expressway (I-94) and the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) carry the most traffic, with rush hours roughly 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. on weekdays. Most RVs fit standard expressway lanes, but avoid Lower Wacker Drive and downtown alleys, and watch clearance signs on older underpasses. Winter brings snow and ice from December through March, and summer thunderstorms can roll in quickly. If downtown Chicago driving feels intimidating, ask your host for delivery directly to your campground and skip city traffic entirely.
travelmidwest.com/What amenities do campgrounds near Northfield typically offer?
You'll find a great range of options. Illinois state parks like Illinois Beach and Chain O'Lakes offer electric hookups (30/50 amp), drinking water fill stations, and dump stations, though many sites are electric-only without individual water and sewer at each site. Private parks such as KOA Chicago Northwest offer full hookups (water, sewer, electric), Wi-Fi, pools, and laundry. Public dump stations are available at several Illinois Tollway oases. For close fresh water and dump options to Northfield, Camp Reinberg in Palatine and Illinois Beach State Park are good choices. Pack a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a basic sewer kit, your host will usually provide both but it's smart to confirm at pickup.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.chainolakes.htmlWhat's included inside the RV I rent in Northfield?
More than you'd expect. Most motorhome rental Northfield options come fully equipped to live in, including a queen or king bed, sleeping space for 4 to 8 people, a kitchen with fridge/freezer, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control (furnace and air conditioning), and seatbelted seating for travel. Many also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and a generator for off-grid power. Wi-Fi is sometimes included but not always, so check the listing or message the host. Linens, kitchenware, and camp chairs are often add-ons (typically $25 to $75 per kit). Filter by Sleeps count and look for family RV trip Northfield favorites with bunkhouse layouts if you're traveling with kids.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Northfield%2C%20IllinoisWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts near Northfield offer a flexible mix of extras to make your trip easier. Common add-ons include generator use ($25 to $50 per night), kitchen and linen kits ($50 to $100), bikes, kayaks, camp chairs, propane fire pits, and pet packages. Pickup is typically at the host's home in Northfield or a nearby North Shore suburb like Glenview, Northbrook, or Wilmette, with delivery available for an extra fee. Mileage policies vary by host, most include 100 to 150 free miles per night with overage at $0.30 to $0.50 per mile, and a few offer unlimited mileage. Bundle add-ons at booking to lock in pricing, and ask about late return windows if your Sunday plans are flexible.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Northfield%2C%20IllinoisHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
It's simple and secure. When you book your RV rental Illinois trip, you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, no cash and no awkward handoffs with the host. A security deposit (typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV) is pre-authorized on your card before pickup, not actually charged, and it's released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. Do a thorough walkaround at pickup and dropoff, take photos and video of the interior and exterior, and note fuel and propane levels. Leave the RV as clean as you got it and refill fuel and propane before return to avoid common deposit deductions.
