Camping near Oakland, Illinois
Oakland sits in east-central Illinois in Coles County, surrounded by farmland, small rivers, and a cluster of state parks that anchor most of the region's RV camping. The village itself is small, so RV renters typically base their trip around parks within a short drive, using Oakland as a quiet home point between outings.
The closest developed campground is Gray Squirrel - Walnut Point State Park, a compact lakeside park just west of town on a 59-acre stream-fed lake. A short drive south leads to Fox Ridge State Park, one of the larger campgrounds in the area, set along the forested bluffs of the Embarras River. Mill Creek Park offers a county-operated lake option, while Lakeside - Lincoln Trail State Park and Casey KOA round out the choices to the east and southeast.
Together, these campgrounds cover the main formats an RV renter looks for: state park electric sites, a county park with a lake, and a private KOA with full hookups near Interstate 70.
Things to do around Oakland
Water and trails drive most trips in this area. Walnut Point's 59-acre lake is limited to electric trolling motors and has about five miles of trails through hardwood forest, while Fox Ridge sits along the forested bluffs of the Embarras River with rugged hiking across 2,064 acres. Lincoln Trail State Park adds a larger lake with boat access, and Mill Creek Park is built around a Coles County reservoir popular for bass fishing and paddling.
Families traveling with kids often pair camping with a day trip to the Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site south of Charleston and the Amish shops and bakeries in the Arcola and Arthur area northwest of Oakland. Casey, southeast on I-70, is known for its collection of oversized roadside attractions and works well as a rainy-day stop.

The main RV camping season in east-central Illinois runs from mid-spring through late fall. Shower buildings at Fox Ridge typically close around November 1 and reopen May 1, weather depending, and most Illinois state park campgrounds follow a similar pattern, with electric loops sometimes staying open on a limited basis outside those dates.
Spring brings wildflowers and greener trails, but it is also the wettest stretch of the year, and low-lying sites can be soft after storms. Summer is peak season: warm, humid, and busy on weekends, especially around holidays and Eastern Illinois University events in Charleston. Fall is the local favorite for RV trips, with cooler nights, lower humidity, and strong color on the wooded ridges through mid-October.
Winter camping is limited. Water systems are shut off at most state park sites, and services at Casey KOA and county parks scale back significantly.

How to book
Illinois state park campgrounds, including Gray Squirrel - Walnut Point State Park, Fox Ridge, and Lakeside - Lincoln Trail State Park, are reserved through the state's ExploreMoreIL system. Reservations open up to six months ahead and must be made at least three days before arrival, and summer weekends at the larger parks tend to fill first. Fox Ridge offers more than 40 campsites and two rustic cabins bookable through the same portal.
Casey KOA is booked directly through the KOA website or app, which is the easiest route for RV renters who want guaranteed full hookups and pull-through access. Mill Creek Park is a Coles County-operated campground and is reserved through the county park district.
Some state park loops keep first-come, first-served sites, useful for mid-week arrivals.
What to expect
Sites at the nearby state parks are wooded and shaded, with electric hookups common and water available at central spigots rather than at each site. Most sites are level and accommodating for RVs, though Fox Ridge is almost entirely back-in with only one pull-through, which is worth noting for larger rigs. Dump stations are standard at the state parks.
Casey KOA is the go-to option for renters who need full hookups, pull-through sites, and reliable Wi-Fi. Mill Creek Park and Walnut Point are quieter, more basic setups oriented around fishing and short trails.
Cell coverage is generally decent on major carriers across this part of Illinois, but signal can dip inside the wooded loops at Fox Ridge and Lincoln Trail. Groceries, fuel, and propane are easiest to find in Charleston, Mattoon, or Casey rather than in Oakland itself.
