Campgrounds and RV parks near Oakwood, IL

Oakwood sits in Vermilion County in east-central Illinois, just off Interstate 74 between Champaign and the Indiana state line. The town serves as the main highway exit for two large public recreation areas that draw most RV traffic to the region: Kickapoo State Recreation Area and the Middle Fork State Fish and Wildlife Area. Both parks are managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and share the Middle Fork of the Vermilion River, a federally designated National Scenic River. Most campers base at Redear Campground - Kickapoo State Recreation Area, which sits inside the 2,842-acre park on former surface-mining land now covered with hardwood forest and deep-water ponds. Middle Fork State Fish and Wildlife Area Equestrian, a few miles north, is the option for riders and primitive campers. Private hookup sites are available at D and W Lake Camping and RV Park in Champaign, about a 30-minute drive west. For a longer haul, Gray Squirrel - Walnut Point State Park lies southwest near Oakland, and Horseshoe Lakes RV Campground rounds out the nearby options.

Illinois state park sites in this area, including Kickapoo and Walnut Point, are reserved through the state's ExploreMoreIL system. The reservation window opens 180 days ahead, so weekends and holidays fill early. Class A electric sites at Walnut Point and the electric loops at Kickapoo, which cover sites 1 through 101, are the first to go. Equestrian and primitive sites at Middle Fork State Fish and Wildlife Area Equestrian are handled through the park office. Check in with the campground host on arrival. The maximum length of stay at Kickapoo is 14 days within any 30-day period. Private parks such as D and W Lake Camping and RV Park and Horseshoe Lakes RV Campground book directly through their own websites or by phone.
