Potowatomi - Kankakee River State Park is open from April through October, and reservations are available up to six months in advance. Private parks such as Kankakee South KOA Holiday and D and W Lake Camping and RV Park generally operate on a similar schedule, with limited or no winter service. Summer is peak. Weekends fill fastest around the Fourth of July, the Newton County Pun'kin Vine Fair in mid-July, and Labor Day. Expect warm, humid afternoons and pop-up thunderstorms; biting insects are heaviest in June and July near the river. Spring brings cooler nights, active water, and softer ground on unpaved sites. Fall delivers the most comfortable hiking and biking weather, with color usually peaking in mid to late October. Winter camping options are minimal: the state park opens for snowmobiling from sunrise to sunset in mid-January when hunting season ends and there is snow cover of 4 inches or more, but most campgrounds close.

Sites in the area lean rustic to mid-tier. At Kankakee River State Park, Potowatomi's four loops offer a total of 110 Class A campsites, and each site is equipped with electric hookups, a picnic table, and a fire ring, with hot showers, vault toilets, a dump station, and water taps available within the campground. Site lengths vary, so book a site that will accommodate the RV. Rules to plan around: campgrounds close at 10 p.m. and observe quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. with no vehicular traffic allowed, and campers must be 18 years old to rent a site and able to establish camp at the time of permit. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in the park and campgrounds at all times. The Kankakee River is scenic but not swimmable due to dangerous and unpredictable currents and drop offs, so plan water play at private-park pools or lakes.
