Camping near Palmyra, Illinois
Palmyra sits in Macoupin County in west-central Illinois, roughly halfway between Springfield and the St. Louis metro area. The surrounding landscape is a mix of farmland, oak-hickory woodland, and small lakes, and the town works well as a base for RV travelers exploring Route 66 corridor stops, Lincoln-era historic sites in Springfield, and the Illinois River bluffs to the west.
The closest public camping is Beaver Dam State Park, located in Macoupin County 7 miles southwest of Carlinville and situated in an oak/hickory woodland. The 750-acre park offers fishing, picnicking, hiking, and tent and trailer camping. Private RV parks cluster around nearby Litchfield, a Route 66 town about 20 minutes southeast, including Lazy Days Campground, Country Bend Campground, Kamper Kompanion RV Park, and Double J Campground and RV Park.
Most sites in this area are level, wooded or partially shaded, and geared toward families. Rigs of most sizes can be accommodated, though hookup levels vary from electric-only at the state park to full hookups at the private parks.
Things to do near Palmyra
Fishing and paddling dominate the outdoor options. Beaver Dam State Park is centered on a lake stocked with bass, catfish, bluegill, and crappie, with a boat ramp and an accessible fishing pier. The park also offers hiking and biking trails, an archery range, picnic areas, hunting in season, and wildlife viewing, and cross-country skiing draws visitors in the winter months.
Families staying at private parks get on-site recreation without leaving the campground. Country Bend Campground offers a pool, jumping pillow, playgrounds, four fishing ponds, pedal boating, putt-putt, a game room, and a modern bathhouse. Lazy Days Campground includes ponds for swimming and fishing along with courts and playgrounds on site.
Off-site, the Route 66 corridor through Litchfield adds the Sky View Drive-In, the Ariston Cafe, and antique shopping, while Springfield puts Lincoln-related museums and historic homes within about a 40-minute drive.

The main RV season in this part of Illinois runs from spring through mid-fall. Private parks in the area follow that pattern closely: Country Bend Campground is open seasonally from April through the end of October, and similar shoulder-season closures apply to most privately run RV parks nearby.
Late spring and early summer bring the region's wettest weather and the strongest thunderstorms, so travelers should watch forecasts for severe weather and plan for occasional muddy sites. Mid-summer is hot and humid, with July typically the warmest month. Weekend and holiday sites at Beaver Dam State Park fill quickly from Memorial Day through Labor Day, so booking early is advised.
Fall brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and good fishing on the lake. Winter camping is limited. The concession stand at Beaver Dam is open from April through mid-October, so off-season stays mean fewer services on site, and most private parks in the area shut down for the winter.
How to book near Palmyra
Reservations at Beaver Dam State Park go through the Illinois DNR's ExploreMoreIL system. The park has 40 reservable campsites; all other sites are first-come, first-served, and the Rent-A-Cabin is also available for reservation through ExploreMoreIL. Reservations must be made at least three days before arrival and can cover up to 14 nights. Arriving early on Friday improves the odds of grabbing a walk-up site on busy weekends.
Private parks around Litchfield accept bookings directly through their websites or by phone. Some options may have two to three-night minimums on holiday weekends, so check policies before booking a short stay. Cabins, waterfront sites, and full-hookup pull-throughs tend to book out first for summer weekends.
What to expect on site
Expect a mix of state-park rustic and private-park amenity-heavy experiences. At Beaver Dam State Park, the trailer camping area has electricity at each pad and a sanitary dump station, a shower building with flush toilets sits in the center of the trailer camping area, and water is available but individual sites do not have water hookups. All camping is situated in wooded areas with large oak and hickory trees, which provide shade throughout most of the day.
Private parks in the area generally offer full hookups, laundry, camp stores, and family activity areas. Country Bend Campground adds a dump station, laundry, propane fill, and a camp shop alongside its pool and ponds. Cell coverage is generally decent on major carriers, terrain is flat to gently rolling, and mosquitoes can be active near the ponds in summer.
