Camping near Palos Heights, Illinois
Palos Heights sits in southwest Cook County, on the edge of the Palos Forest Preserves, a 15,000-acre network of woods, sloughs, and trails managed by the Forest Preserve District of Cook County. The area is the largest concentration of preserved land in the Cook County system, with lakes such as Saganashkee Slough, Maple Lake, and Bullfrog Lake within a short drive of most RV sites.
RV renters use Palos Heights as a base for reaching downtown Chicago (roughly 25 miles northeast) while still parking under trees at night. Private RV parks in the surrounding communities handle most full-hookup stays. Options within easy driving range include Pingala RV Resort, Martin Campground, Enchanted Shores, and Emerald Trails Campground, plus Chicagoland Speedway/Lakeside Campgrounds south toward Joliet.
Cook County's Forest Preserve system also operates campgrounds within the Palos Division that accept tents, cabins, and some RV units, giving renters a mix of private-park convenience and public-land access without leaving the metro area.
Things to do near Palos Heights
The Palos Preserves anchor most trips. Trail systems link sites like the Little Red Schoolhouse Nature Center, Pulaski Woods, Saganashkee Slough, and Maple Lake, with routes suited to hiking, road cycling, and mountain biking. The Maple Lake area serves as a staging point for a network of roughly 40 miles of unpaved mountain-bike trails through Palos.
Water use is a draw in warm months. Canoe and kayak rentals are available seasonally at Saganashkee Slough (through the REI boathouse), Maple Lake, and Tampier Slough. Fishing is allowed at many of the sloughs, and Swallow Cliff Woods offers a well-known stair workout up a 100-foot bluff.
For family days off the trail, Brookfield Zoo is a short drive north, and downtown Chicago's museums, lakefront, and stadiums are reachable by car or Metra commuter rail from nearby stations.

Chicago has a humid continental climate with sharp seasonal contrasts. Summers are warm and often humid, winters are cold and snowy, and precipitation is spread fairly evenly through the year, with July and August the wettest months and January and February the driest. Expect highs in the low 80s Fahrenheit through midsummer and lows well below freezing in January.
Peak RV season runs Memorial Day through Labor Day. Weekends at Cook County Forest Preserve campgrounds and private parks book up early, especially around the Fourth of July. Late spring and early fall are quieter and often more comfortable for hiking, with fewer bugs and cooler nights.
Winter camping is limited but possible. Camp Bullfrog Lake in the Palos Preserves operates year-round, while many private RV parks in the region close or reduce services from late fall through March. Severe weather, including thunderstorms and occasional tornadoes, is most common from April through July.

How to book a site near Palos Heights
Private RV parks near Palos Heights, including Pingala RV Resort, Martin Campground, Enchanted Shores, and Emerald Trails Campground, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Full-hookup sites at these parks fill fastest on summer weekends and holidays, so booking several weeks ahead is standard.
Cook County Forest Preserve campgrounds, including Camp Bullfrog Lake in the Palos Division, are reserved through the Forest Preserves of Cook County online reservation system at fpdcc.com/camping or by phone at 855-YES-CAMP, and offer tent, cabin, bunkhouse, group, and RV sites.
For Illinois state parks in the wider region, reservations run through the ExploreMoreIL system. Sites can be reserved up to 180 days in advance, and reservations must be made at least three days before arrival. The maximum stay is 14 nights within a 30-day period, and some holiday weekends carry a two-night minimum.
What to expect around Palos Heights
Palos Heights is fully suburban, so groceries, fuel, propane, and RV service are easy to reach. Cell coverage is generally strong across the area, though it can drop inside deeper sections of the Palos Preserves.
Private RV parks in the region typically provide water, electric, and sewer hookups, with paved or gravel pads and shared bathhouses. Forest Preserve campgrounds trend more rustic, with a mix of modern restrooms, cabins, and tent-oriented sites; some loops have limited RV capacity, so confirm rig-length limits before booking.
Mosquitoes and ticks are active in wetland areas from late spring through early fall, so bring repellent and check after hikes. Traffic on I-294 and I-55 into and out of Chicago is heavy at rush hour, and large rigs should plan arrivals and departures outside peak commute windows.

Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book, giving you breathing room to finalize plans. Cancellation terms depend on how far out you are from your trip start date. Booking your Palos Heights RV trip early gives you more flexibility, not less: lock in the rig you love now, then finalize campground reservations and route details with confidence. You can review the full cancellation policy in the RVezy Help Center before you book.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Palos Heights?
Yes, plenty of hosts welcome four-legged co-pilots. Just check the Pet-Friendly filter when browsing pet-friendly RV rental Palos Heights listings on RVezy, and you'll see motorhomes and travel trailers ready for your pup. Palos Heights is a fantastic launch point for dog owners: the Lake Katherine Nature Center and Botanic Gardens has leashed-dog trails right in town, and the nearby Palos and Sag Valley forest preserves offer over 100 miles of trails through the Cook County Forest Preserves system. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees (usually $25 to $75) and bring a copy of vaccination records for any campground check-ins.
fpdcc.com/Can the RV be delivered to my campground or home?
Yes, RV delivery Palos Heights is one of the most popular options, especially for first-timers who'd rather skip driving a 30-foot rig through Harlem Avenue traffic. Many hosts will deliver and set up your motorhome rental Palos Heights right at your driveway, a local campground like Camp Bullfrog Lake in Willow Springs, or even at a wedding venue or family reunion site. Just use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see who offers it. Delivery fees typically run $2 to $5 per mile from the host's location. Your host handles leveling, hookups, and a full walkthrough, so you can focus on the fun part.
fpdcc.com/things-to-do/camping/How far can I drive from Palos Heights on an RV trip?
You can go just about anywhere in the Midwest from Palos Heights. Mileage policies vary by host, but many offer generous daily allowances (100 to 200 miles per day) and some even list RV rental with unlimited mileage. Pro tip: if you're planning a longer loop, filter for unlimited-mileage listings or message hosts to negotiate a flat rate for extended trips.
nps.gov/indu/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Palos Heights?
You're spoiled for choice on best campgrounds near Palos Heights. Camp Bullfrog Lake in Willow Springs (about 10 minutes away) is the closest full-service option with electric and water sites, a dump station, and lakeside views. Camp Sullivan in Oak Forest sits just 15 minutes south with electric RV sites and modern bathhouses. For a bigger trip, Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in Volo (45 minutes northwest) offers full hookups and lake swimming, and Chicago Northwest KOA in Union has full-service sites about an hour out. Insider tip: Cook County Forest Preserve campgrounds are wildly popular with locals, so reserve as early as you can.
fpdcc.com/things-to-do/camping/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Palos Heights?
Late May through early October is prime time for RV camping Palos Heights, with average daytime temperatures from 70°F to 85°F and warm evenings perfect for campfires. June and September are the sweet spot: fewer mosquitoes, lighter campground crowds, and lower nightly rates. July and August bring Chicago's signature humidity, so look for rigs with strong air conditioning. Fall foliage along the Illinois River Valley peaks in mid-October and is genuinely stunning. Winter rentals are possible but limited because Cook County Forest Preserve campgrounds typically operate May through October, and overnight lows can dip below 20°F. Spring (late April) is a great shoulder-season pick.
weather.gov/lot/I've never rented an RV before. Is this really doable?
Totally doable, and you're in good company: most renters on RVezy are first-timers. When you rent an RV in Palos Heights, your host gives you a full hands-on walkthrough at pickup, covering everything from leveling and hookups to the water pump, propane, and slide-outs. You can also message your host anytime during the trip with questions. RVezy's 24/7 support is one tap away in the app if you hit a snag. Pro tip: start with a Class C motorhome or travel trailer under 25 feet for your first Palos Heights RV trip. They drive like a big van and fit easily at Camp Bullfrog Lake's sites.
fmcsa.dot.gov/What happens if I break down or have a problem on the road?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on I-355 or a dead battery at Starved Rock is handled with one phone call. Your host is also a direct resource for quirks specific to their RV, and you can reach them through in-app messaging anytime. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after every trip. Take five minutes at pickup to save the roadside assistance number to your phone and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate just in case.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Palos Heights RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is totally allowed, and that's one of the best things about an RV road trip from Palos Heights. You're a half-day's drive from Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, Iowa, and Missouri, with no special paperwork needed. Cross-border trips to Canada may be allowed depending on the host and the insurance terms, so message the host directly through the listing before booking to confirm. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Popular multi-state loops include the Lake Michigan Circle Tour and a Mississippi River route down through Hannibal and St. Louis.
cbp.gov/travelWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for?
Budget realistically and you'll have no surprises. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class A rigs run 6 to 10 mpg, campervans (Class B) get a respectable 15 to 20 mpg, and if you're towing a travel trailer with your own truck, expect a 25 to 40 percent drop from your truck's usual mpg. Illinois gas prices in the Chicago metro tend to run a bit higher than the national average due to state and Cook County fuel taxes, so consider filling up in Will County (just south of Palos Heights) or Indiana, where prices drop noticeably. A campervan rental Palos Heights is the most fuel-efficient pick for longer trips.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground?
Earlier is better around Chicago. Cook County Forest Preserve campgrounds (Camp Bullfrog Lake, Camp Sullivan, Camp Shabbona Woods) open reservations through their official Forest Preserves of Cook County booking site, and summer weekends fill up months ahead, often by March or April. State park campgrounds like Starved Rock and Illinois Beach book through Reserve America's ExploreMoreIL.com system, and the popular weekends release on a rolling six-month window. For July 4th and Labor Day weekend, aim to book your site the moment the window opens. Pro tip: book your RVezy rental first, then snag the campsite. Hosts can recommend spots that fit their rig's length.
camp.exploremoreil.com/What are the driving conditions like around Palos Heights?
Palos Heights itself is easy: tree-lined suburban streets, plenty of wide roads, and quick access to I-294 and I-80. The real consideration is timing your drive to avoid Chicago rush hours (roughly 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m. on weekdays), when the Tri-State Tollway slows to a crawl. Winter brings lake-effect snow and salted roads from December through February, so most renters stick to May through October. If you're nervous about driving through the south suburbs, ask your host about RV delivery Palos Heights options. Pro tip: head south on I-355 to bypass downtown traffic when leaving for Indiana or Michigan.
illinoistollway.com/What amenities can I expect at local campgrounds?
Cook County Forest Preserve campgrounds around Palos Heights offer a clean, no-frills experience. Camp Bullfrog Lake has electric and water hookups (30/50 amp), modern bathhouses with hot showers, and an on-site dump station for sani-dumping at the end of your trip. Camp Sullivan offers electric-only sites and shares Bullfrog Lake's dump station just 20 minutes away. Drinking water fills are available at the bathhouses. For full hookups including sewer at your site, head to Fish Lake Beach Resort or Chicago Northwest KOA. Insider tip: rigs over 38 feet won't fit at most Forest Preserve sites, so check your RV's length before booking your campsite.
fpdcc.com/things-to-do/camping/What's inside the RV? What amenities should I expect?
Most RVs on RVezy in the Palos Heights area come fully equipped and ready to roll. Expect a queen or king bed in the main suite, convertible dinette and sofa beds, a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, roof and dash air conditioning, a furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many listings include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and onboard generator for boondocking. Wi-Fi varies, so most travelers tether to a phone hotspot. Read each listing's amenities section carefully and message the host to confirm sleeps-count, linens, and whether kitchenware is provided (it usually is).
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Palos%20Heights%2C%20IllinoisWhat add-ons and pickup options do hosts offer?
Hosts in Palos Heights offer a great mix of add-ons to customize your trip. Common extras include camp chairs and tables, outdoor grills, bedding and linen packages, generator hours, kayaks or bikes, and dog crates, typically $10 to $50 each. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Palos Heights or a nearby south suburb, with a 60 to 90 minute walkthrough included. Many hosts offer 100 to 150 free miles per night with overage at $0.35 to $0.50 per mile, and some list unlimited-mileage rentals. Bundle add-ons during booking rather than asking at pickup, since items like generators or bike racks may need to be reserved in advance.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Palos%20Heights%2C%20IllinoisHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment on RVezy is straightforward and secure, all handled through the platform. You pay the full rental cost (or a deposit, depending on how far out you book) at the time of booking using a credit or debit card, with the balance charged before pickup. A separate security deposit hold is placed on your card a few days before your trip and released after your host confirms the RV came back in good shape, typically within a week. Deposit amounts vary by listing. Do a video walkaround with your host at both pickup and drop-off to avoid any deposit disputes on your Palos Heights RV trip.
