Camping near Palos Hills, Illinois
Palos Hills sits in southwest Cook County, roughly 20 miles from downtown Chicago and directly adjacent to the Palos Forest Preserves, a 15,000-acre block that is the largest concentration of preserved land in the Forest Preserves and holds some of the highest-quality natural areas in Cook County. RV travelers use the city as a base for hiking, fishing, and paddling in the preserves while staying within easy reach of Chicago attractions.
Options for RVs are spread across the surrounding suburbs and along the I-80 corridor toward Joliet. Nearby private parks include Pingala RV Resort and Enchanted Shores, and, closer to the interstate, Martin Campground, Chicagoland Speedway/Lakeside Campgrounds, and Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort. Camp Bullfrog Lake in Willow Springs sits within the Palos Preserves, with electric hookups at select RV/tent sites and year-round access through the Forest Preserves of Cook County.
Most sites are a short drive from Metra commuter rail and expressway access, so travelers can park the rig and use transit for stadium visits, museums, or downtown days without towing into the city.
Things to do near Palos Hills
The Palos Forest Preserves are the main draw, with more than 50 miles of trails linking sites like Little Red Schoolhouse Nature Center, Pulaski Woods, Saganashkee Slough, and Maple Lake. Pulaski Woods is popular among mountain bikers for its hills and turns. Anglers work Saganashkee Slough, Maple Lake, Tampier Lake, and Bullfrog Lake for bass, bluegill, and catfish, and kayak rentals are available at Camp Bullfrog Lake with an accessible launch.
Swallow Cliff Woods is best known for its steep bluff, which doubles as a county sledding hill in winter and a stair workout in warmer months. Families often add a day trip into Chicago for the lakefront, museums, or a ballgame, with Midway Airport and downtown both reachable in under an hour outside rush hour.

The Chicago area has four distinct seasons. The climate is classified as hot-summer humid continental, with hot humid summers and cold, occasionally snowy winters. Late spring through early fall is the practical RV window, with the busiest weekends running from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Site availability tightens quickly for July and August, and holiday weekends often sell out weeks or months ahead.
Summer is warm and can be stormy. Yearly precipitation averages about 36 inches, but during the summer, rain tends to fall as short-lived hit-or-miss showers rather than prolonged rainfalls, and thunderstorms occur regularly at night. Severe weather is possible: northern Illinois sees tornado activity mainly from spring into midsummer, and derechos can also affect the region.
Spring and fall bring cooler temperatures, thinner crowds, and strong color in the preserves. Camp Bullfrog Lake offers year-round camping, but many private parks operate seasonally, typically April through October, so confirm dates before booking a winter stay.

How to book campgrounds near Palos Hills
Public and private systems each have their own rules. Cook County's Forest Preserves campgrounds, including Camp Bullfrog Lake, Camp Sullivan, Camp Reinberg, Camp Dan Beard, and Camp Shabbona Woods, take reservations online at fpdcc.com/camping or by phone at 855-YES-CAMP, and summer weekends fill months ahead. Illinois state parks such as Kankakee River and Starved Rock take reservations up to six months in advance through the ExploreMoreIL system, with a minimum of three days before arrival.
Private parks like Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort, Pingala RV Resort, Martin Campground, Chicagoland Speedway/Lakeside Campgrounds, and Enchanted Shores each handle reservations directly through their own websites, and event weekends at the speedway can lock up nearby inventory quickly. For a last-minute trip, target Sunday-through-Thursday stays or check cancellation lists midweek.
What to expect on the ground
Roads around Palos Hills are suburban and RV-friendly. Driving the southwest suburbs is manageable, with wide roads and easy highway access via I-80, I-355, and LaGrange Road (US-45). Fuel stations, groceries, and dump stations are easy to find along the main corridors.
Hookup levels vary. Private parks typically offer full hookups and Wi-Fi, while Camp Bullfrog Lake provides 20-amp electric at select RV/tent sites and a central sanitation station at the south end of the campground rather than at individual sites. Cellular coverage is strong across the area.
Expect mosquitoes and ticks in the preserves from late spring through early fall, especially near sloughs. Pack layers even in summer, since evenings by the water can cool quickly, and bring rain gear for the afternoon thunderstorms common from May through August.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Palos%20Hills%2C%20IllinoisWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Palos Hills?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Palos Hills. Illinois does not require a special RV endorsement or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for personal motorhomes or trailers under 26,001 pounds, which covers virtually every rig on RVezy. You'll just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy handles ID verification right inside the platform. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto club before you fly in. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple the paperwork really is, so you can focus on planning your Starved Rock or Indiana Dunes road trip instead.
ilsos.gov/departments/drivers/drivers_license/home.htmlIs RV rental insurance and roadside assistance included with my Palos Hills booking?
Yes, every RV rental in Palos Hills booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit I-294 or I-55 with confidence. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV up to the coverage limits you select, giving you significant peace of mind. Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets a standardized cancellation policy for every reservation, and it includes a grace period after booking during which you can cancel for a full refund. Beyond that, your refund depends on how far out from your trip you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy will help you rebook or provide a refund or travel credit. Because the policy is standardized across the platform, you will not see different rules from listing to listing. If anything changes with your Palos Hills RV trip, log in to your RVezy account or contact RVezy support to review your options. Lock in your dates while the rigs you love are still available.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Palos Hills?

Once you're rolling, Palos has some of the best dog-friendly hiking in Cook County: the Palos Trail System out of Camp Bullfrog Lake, Swallow Cliff Woods, and the Little Red Schoolhouse Nature Center all allow leashed dogs. Most Cook County Forest Preserves require a 10-foot leash maximum, so pack accordingly. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees and ask about their favorite local dog walks. Your pup will sleep great after a day on the trails.
fpdcc.com/nature/dogs/Can the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Palos Hills?
Yes, RV delivery in Palos Hills is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who would rather skip city driving. Many hosts will deliver your motorhome or trailer right to Camp Bullfrog Lake, your home driveway in Palos Hills, or even out to Indiana Dunes or Starved Rock. They will level the rig, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to instantly see hosts who offer it, then message them with your destination for an exact quote (delivery fees are usually based on round-trip mileage). It is the closest thing to glamping with zero learning curve.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Palos%20Hills%2C%20IllinoisHow far can I drive, and what does the mileage policy look like?
Mileage is flexible on RVezy. Each host sets their own daily mileage allowance, and many listings offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect for an ambitious RV road trip from Palos Hills. Always check the listing's mileage section before booking, and if you are planning long highway days, message the host to pre-purchase extra miles at a flat rate. A good rule of thumb: budget 100 to 150 miles per day for a relaxed pace through Illinois and the surrounding states. Unlimited mileage is especially worth it if you are chasing the Great Lakes or driving down to Shawnee National Forest.

fpdcc.com/places/locations/camp-bullfrog-lake/When is the best time of year for RV camping in Palos Hills?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for RV camping Palos Hills, with summer highs in the upper 70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit and warm evenings perfect for campfires. June through August is peak season with the most amenities open, though it's also the busiest. The smart-money play is the shoulder seasons: mid-May and September into early October bring mild 60 to 75 degree days, fewer crowds, and stunning fall color across the Palos Preserves. Winters can dip into the teens with snow, so most renters stick to April through October. If you're chasing autumn colors, plan your trip for the first two weeks of October when the oak forests really light up.
weather.gov/lot/I've never rented an RV before. How does the orientation work?
First time renting an RV? You're in great hands. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup or delivery, covering driving the rig, leveling, the propane and water systems, slide-outs, the generator, and dumping the tanks. Most walkthroughs run 30 to 60 minutes, and hosts encourage you to record video on your phone so you can replay it later. You can also message your host any time during the trip with questions, and RVezy's support team is reachable around the clock. Pro tip: do a short practice drive around quieter streets in Palos Hills or out to the Cook County forest preserves before you commit to the interstate.
nhtsa.gov/road-safetyWhat happens if something breaks down during my Palos Hills RV trip?
You are never alone on the road. Every motorhome rental in Palos Hills booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on I-355 or a dead battery near Starved Rock is a quick phone call away from help. Your host is also your first line of support for quirks specific to their RV, and most respond within minutes. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip to coordinate repairs or alternative arrangements. Save the roadside number in your phone before pickup. With that safety net in place, you can relax and focus on the adventure ahead.

You're 20 miles southwest of downtown Chicago, so you can completely bypass the Loop using I-294 (the Tri-State Tollway) and I-355. Local roads through the Palos Preserves are flat and RV-friendly. If big-city driving makes you nervous, RV delivery Palos Hills is the easy fix, hosts will bring the rig right to you.

dnr.illinois.gov/parks.htmlWhat's actually inside a typical RV rental in Palos Hills?
Modern rigs come surprisingly well-equipped. A typical campervan rental Palos Hills includes a bed, small kitchenette with fridge and stove, and often a wet bath. Class C motorhomes add a queen bed over the cab, a dinette that converts to sleeping space, full kitchen with microwave, a real bathroom with shower, roof AC, furnace, and a TV. Larger Class A and fifth wheels often include washer/dryer hookups, residential fridges, and bunk rooms perfect for a family RV trip Palos Hills weekend. Most include a generator for off-grid power, and many list Wi-Fi hotspots as add-ons. Seatbelt counts vary by rig, so verify on the listing if you're traveling with kids; only seatbelted seats are safe for travel.
nhtsa.gov/equipment/recreational-vehiclesWhat add-ons can I get, and how does pickup or drop-off work?
You can customize your rental to fit your trip. Popular add-ons on RVezy include linen and kitchen packages, bikes, kayaks, camping chairs, generators, portable grills, and extra propane. Some hosts also rent outdoor mats and fire pits. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Palos Hills, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. Many hosts also offer delivery for a per-mile fee, which is a lifesaver for first-timers heading to Camp Bullfrog Lake or Indiana Dunes. Mileage policies vary, so look for listings with generous daily limits or unlimited miles if you are road-tripping. Message the host upfront to confirm pickup time, location, and any add-ons you want.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Palos%20Hills%2C%20IllinoisHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. You pay the full rental amount through RVezy at booking using a credit or debit card. The host places a separate refundable security deposit hold on your card a few days before pickup, typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV's value. As long as you return the rig in the agreed condition with the required fuel level and tanks emptied, the hold is released after your trip. To avoid any surprises, take date-stamped photos at pickup and drop-off, follow the mileage and generator-hour limits on your listing, and refuel before returning. That simple routine keeps your Palos Hills RV trip stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I legally park my RV overnight in and around Palos Hills?
You have plenty of legal overnight options. Cook County Forest Preserve campgrounds like Camp Bullfrog Lake and Camp Sullivan in Oak Forest allow overnight RV stays with a reservation. Some Walmart and Cracker Barrel locations along I-80 and I-55 allow one-night parking with manager permission, but always call ahead to confirm. Street parking overnight is restricted in Palos Hills residential areas, and Chicago city limits generally prohibit RV overnight parking on streets, so plan your route accordingly. If you need a quick stopover, Hollywood Casino RV Resort in Joliet is about 25 minutes south. Pro tip: knowing where to park an RV in Palos Hills makes the whole trip smoother, and host delivery removes the question entirely.
