Camping near Palos Park, Illinois
Palos Park sits in southwest Cook County, roughly 25 miles from downtown Chicago and bordered by the Palos Preserves, one of the largest Forest Preserves of Cook County holdings. The village is a practical base for RV renters who want quick access to Chicago attractions without parking a rig in the city. Interstates 55, 80, 294, and 355 all pass within a short drive, connecting Palos Park to Joliet, Naperville, and the greater Chicagoland region.
RV camping options inside Palos Park itself are limited, so most travelers stage from private parks in nearby Joliet, New Lenox, and the surrounding suburbs. Martin Campground in Joliet is the closest full-hookup private park, with Chicagoland Speedway/Lakeside Campgrounds a short drive further. Additional options in the wider region include Pingala RV Resort, Enchanted Shores, and Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort.
The Forest Preserves of Cook County manage the adjacent Palos and Sag Valley preserves, which offer day-use trails but do not permit RV overnight stays on general preserve land.
Things to do near Palos Park
The Palos Preserves offer more than 100 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, including the Little Red Schoolhouse Nature Center and Swallow Cliff Woods. Little Red Schoolhouse features live native-wildlife exhibits, easy interpretive loops, and a visitor center that works well with kids. Swallow Cliff Woods draws visitors to its restored limestone stairs and connecting singletrack trails.
From Palos Park, downtown Chicago attractions such as Navy Pier, the Museum Campus, Millennium Park, and Willis Tower are reachable by car or by Metra commuter rail from nearby stations. The Chicagoland Speedway complex in Joliet hosts occasional events, and casino entertainment is available at Hollywood Casino and Harrah's Joliet. Brookfield Zoo and the Cook County forest preserve bike trail network are also within a short drive.

The core RV camping window in the Chicago area runs from mid-spring through late fall. Martin Campground operates seasonally from roughly mid-March through early November, and most other private parks in the region follow a similar schedule, closing or offering limited services through the coldest months. Booking demand rises sharply around Memorial Day and stays high through Labor Day.
Summer is warm and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common and occasional severe-weather watches. It is also the busiest stretch for Chicago festivals, Cubs and White Sox home games, and Joliet-area events, so sites at nearby parks fill weeks in advance. Fall brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and strong foliage color through the Palos Preserves, typically peaking in mid to late October.
Winter is cold with lake-effect snow possible, and most private RV parks close or drop to storage-only operations. Early spring can be muddy in the preserves, with trail closures after heavy rain and snowmelt.

How to book campgrounds near Palos Park
Private RV parks in the Palos Park and Joliet corridor typically book directly through their own websites or by phone. Policies vary: Martin's Camping Ground does not accept online reservations and operates first-come, first-served, asking guests to call the office to plan a visit. Confirm rig-length limits, hookup amp service, and pet rules before arrival.
For state-park camping in the wider region, Illinois Department of Natural Resources sites use the Reserve America / Camp Illinois reservation system, with a rolling booking window that opens six months ahead of arrival. Summer weekends and holiday weeks sell out quickly, so lock in dates early and have a backup park identified in case a first choice is full.
What to expect on the ground
Private parks in this corridor are geared toward practical, full-hookup RV stays rather than backcountry camping. Sites typically include 30-amp and 50-amp electric, water and sewer hookups, pull-through options for larger rigs, and an on-site dump station. Interstate proximity is common: expect road and rail noise at parks near I-55 and I-80.
Sites at Martin Campground tend to sit close together on grass, oriented around RV parking rather than tent-style camping activities, and the park does not allow campfires, so families wanting fire rings and picnic tables at every site should confirm amenities before booking. Cell service across the Chicagoland region is strong on all major carriers.
Traffic in and out of Chicago is heavy on weekday mornings and afternoons. Plan long-rig arrivals and departures for mid-morning or early afternoon to avoid rush hour on I-55, I-80, and I-294.
