Water recreation drives most trips. Lincoln Trail State Park allows boating, fishing, and swimming on Lincoln Trail Lake, with boat and seasonal dock rentals at the concession stand and outboard motor size limits. Mill Creek Park adds free daily dock use for campers and roughly 15 miles of ATV and OHV trails on the west side of the park, useful for families traveling with off-road bikes. Hiking is low-key but rewarding. The half-mile Beech Tree Trail at Lincoln Trail runs from the boat dock to Lakeside Campground through a beech-maple nature preserve, and the two-mile Sand Ford Nature Trail passes through oak-hickory forest. Walnut Point offers quiet fishing and kayaking with no swimming and only electric trolling motors on the lake, plus a small trail network and an on-site cafe.

The main camping window runs spring through fall. Mill Creek Park operates April 1 through October 31, with dates that can shift slightly depending on weather. At Lincoln Trail State Park, shower buildings close by November 1 and reopen May 1, with earlier or later shifts possible when weather turns. Walnut Point's campground is technically open year-round, but many facilities close during cold weather and peak season runs mid-April through the end of October. Summer weekends and holidays fill first. Reservations are recommended, especially during peak summer months and weekends, and most established campgrounds in the region take advance bookings. Late spring brings wildflower blooms in Lincoln Trail's beech woods, including the unusual squaw-root and beech drops. Winter camping is limited but not impossible. Lincoln Trail keeps six miles of lake road available for cross-country skiing when snow closes them to traffic, and ice fishing and skating are allowed when conditions permit. Expect frozen water spigots, closed shower houses, and reduced concession hours.

Most sites in the area are electric-only, without full water and sewer hookups. Lincoln Trail's Plainview and Lakeside are both Class A campgrounds with electricity, showers, tables, fire rings, playground equipment, water, toilet facilities, and a sanitary dumping station. Water spigots are placed around the campground for filling tanks, and a double dump station sits at the exit. Mill Creek Park offers 139 campsites, each with an eleven-by-sixteen-foot crushed stone living area, picnic table, and electricity, with one water station serving three to four campsites and shower facilities on-site. Plainview is generally the easier loop for larger rigs, with spacious sites and pull-throughs, while Lakeside sits closer to the water with smaller, more wooded sites. Cell signal is weak to nonexistent at Lincoln Trail, so plan navigation and communication before arrival.
