Paxton sits in Ford County in east-central Illinois, roughly midway between Champaign-Urbana and the Kankakee area, with I-57 running just west of town. RV travelers use Paxton as a quiet base for exploring the wider Champaign region, the Middle Fork of the Vermilion River corridor, and small-town parks scattered across the prairie. Options close to town lean toward simple municipal and private parks. South Park Municipal Campground in nearby Gibson City is a small, city-run park attached to a block-sized city park, with basic hookups and easy access from IL Routes 9, 47, and 54. D and W Lake Camping and RV Park in Champaign is a full-hookup private park with a small on-site lake, and Tin Cup RV Park in Mahomet functions as a shaded I-74 stopover with pull-through sites and full hookups. For bigger public land and a state-park experience, Redear Campground at Kickapoo State Recreation Area and the equestrian campground at Middle Fork State Fish and Wildlife Area lie about an hour east near Oakwood.

Illinois state-park sites, including Redear Campground at Kickapoo State Recreation Area, are reserved through the ExploreMoreIL system. Reservations open up to 180 days in advance and must be made at least three days ahead; walk-up sites are available on arrival with a two-night maximum on non-reserved stays, and the maximum length of stay is 14 nights in a 30-day period. At Middle Fork State Fish and Wildlife Area, campgrounds are administered by Illinois DNR, with equestrian sites and other loops handled through the same state system where reservable. Private parks handle their own bookings. D and W Lake Camping and RV Park and Tin Cup RV Park both accept online reservations, and South Park Municipal Campground uses a simple check-in process at the Gibson City Police Department for keys and payment.
