Campgrounds near Preston Heights
Preston Heights sits just south of Joliet in Will County, putting RV travelers within a short drive of urban amenities, the Des Plaines and Kankakee river corridors, and a cluster of private campgrounds tied to nearby attractions. The area functions as a practical base for trips into the Chicago metro without parking a rig in the city itself.
Close-in options skew toward private parks rather than public land. Chicagoland Speedway/Lakeside Campgrounds offers RV camping on the speedway property, with race weekends drawing the heaviest demand. Martin Campground provides a smaller, quieter alternative within the Joliet area. Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort pairs casino access with a seasonal RV park. Leisure Lake Membership Resort caters to members and reciprocal-club guests with lake-based recreation. Enchanted Shores rounds out the local list with a longer-stay, family-oriented setup.
Public camping in the region runs through Illinois Department of Natural Resources sites and county forest preserves, with reservable state-park campgrounds bookable through the state system rather than on site.
Things to do near Preston Heights
The Joliet area offers a mix of motorsports, riverfront trails, and casino entertainment that works well for mixed-age RV groups. Hollywood Casino Joliet anchors the adult side of the trip, with dining, gaming, and a shuttle between the hotel and casino. Families typically pair campground time with the Joliet Area Historical Museum, Route 66 sites along the original alignment, and the I&M Canal State Trail for biking and walking. Channahon State Park, Hammel Woods Forest Preserve, and McKinley Woods Forest Preserve sit within a short drive and offer day-use picnicking, fishing, and paddle access on the Des Plaines, DuPage, and Kankakee rivers. Starved Rock State Park, west on I-80, is a popular day trip for waterfalls and canyon hiking.

Northern Illinois has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons, so timing matters. Summer is the peak RV window: warm, humid days, frequent thunderstorms, and the highest demand at private parks. Holiday weekends, particularly Memorial Day and Labor Day, fill the fastest, and Illinois state-park campgrounds require a two-night minimum on those weekends, plus the Fourth of July when it falls on a Friday through Monday.
Spring brings rapid temperature swings, wet ground, and the wettest single month of the year in May. Many private parks in the area open in mid-April and close in mid-October, including the Hollywood Casino RV park, which operates from April through October and requires guests to be at least 21.
Fall is the most comfortable stretch, with cool nights, lower humidity, and good color along river corridors through October. Winter brings freezing temperatures, snow, and limited open campgrounds. Most regional private RV parks shut down for the season, though a few stay open year-round with electric hookups for cold-weather rigs.

What to expect on the ground
Most RV sites in the Preston Heights area are level, gravel or grass pads with 30-amp service; 50-amp service and full hookups are more common at the larger commercial parks but not universal. Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort offers water and electric sites with 30/50-amp service, pull-throughs, big-rig access, showers, and laundry, with a dump station on site and a shuttle to the casino. Chicagoland Speedway/Lakeside Campgrounds is RV-only, with electric and water sites, a dump station, and a pool, and accommodates big rigs.
Expect some background noise from rail, interstate traffic, and, during race weekends, the speedway itself. Cell coverage is generally reliable across the area. Mosquitoes and ticks are active from late spring into early fall, so bring repellent and check kids and pets after time near the rivers and woods.
