Camping near Prospect Heights, Illinois
Prospect Heights sits in Chicago's northwest suburbs in Cook County, roughly 25 miles from downtown Chicago and within an hour's drive of Lake County's Chain O' Lakes region. RV travelers use it as a launch point for lake-based camping to the north and west, where the state's largest concentration of natural lakes offers boating, fishing, and beach access.
The closest private option, Pingala RV Resort, sits nearby for travelers who want quick highway access. A short drive north into Lake County opens up Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in Volo and Grass Lake Marina and RV Park on the Chain O' Lakes waterway. State-run camping is available at Illinois Beach State Park along Lake Michigan and at Turner Lake South within Chain O' Lakes State Park.
The area combines suburban convenience with genuine outdoor recreation. Grocery, fuel, and RV supply stops are plentiful in Prospect Heights and nearby Arlington Heights, Palatine, and Wheeling, which simplifies provisioning before heading to less-developed state park sites.
Things to do near Prospect Heights
The Chain O' Lakes waterway is the region's main draw. The park borders Grass, Marie, and Nippersink lakes and the Fox River, which connects the other seven lakes that make up the Chain, plus a 44-acre Turner Lake inside the park. Fishing targets include muskie, northern pike, largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, and panfish. There is no charge to launch boats at Chain O' Lakes State Park, but a Fox Waterway Agency user fee is required for all boats using the Chain. Boat rentals are available seasonally through the park concessionaire.
On land, Chain O' Lakes offers four trail systems for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Illinois Beach State Park stretches 6.5 miles along the sandy shore of Lake Michigan, with swimming, birding, and a 2.2-mile paved bike trail connecting the north and south units. Fish Lake Beach adds a private beach, heated pool, hot tub, and weekend activities.

The camping season in northern Illinois is tightly bracketed. The campground at Adeline Jay Geo-Karis Illinois Beach State Park is open from April 1 through November 15, with reservations accepted through ExploreMoreIL for stays from May 1 through September 30. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort runs May 1 through October 15 for overnight camping, and other private parks in the Chain O' Lakes area follow a similar schedule. Winter RV camping options are extremely limited.
Spring brings variable weather and cool nights, but campgrounds are quieter and reservations are easier to secure. Summer is peak season: campgrounds see high use on weekends, so reservations are recommended. Holiday weekends (Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day) fill first.
Fall delivers comfortable conditions for many RV travelers: cooler days, fewer bugs, and turning oak foliage across the state parks. Note that Chain O' Lakes State Park closes entirely for hunting after the last weekend in October, so late-season campers should confirm access before booking.

How to book campgrounds near Prospect Heights
Illinois state park sites, including Illinois Beach State Park and Turner Lake South at Chain O' Lakes State Park, are booked through the state's ExploreMoreIL reservation system. Reservations can be made up to 180 days in advance at ExploreMoreIL, and reservations can also be placed by calling 866-716-6550. At Illinois Beach, reservations are only accepted for stays from May 1 through September 30; limited first-come, first-served sites are available outside that window.
Private campgrounds handle their own bookings. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort, Pingala RV Resort, and Grass Lake Marina and RV Park take reservations directly through their websites or by phone. Weekend minimums often apply in summer, and holiday weekends should be booked as early as possible.
For state park camping, the maximum stay is 14 nights in a 30-day period, and a responsible adult with a camp shelter must be present at registration.
What to expect on-site
Site amenities vary widely between state and private campgrounds. The southern-unit campground at Illinois Beach State Park provides 241 Class A Premium sites with electricity (20/30 amp) and access to showers and sanitary facilities. Sites do not have individual water or sewer hookups; water is available at hydrants throughout the campground and a dump station is on site. Chain O' Lakes offers a mix of Class A-Premium sites at Honey Suckle Hollow and Fox Den, plus Class B-Premium sites at Turner Lake South, Prairie View, and Mud Lake East.
Private resorts like Fish Lake Beach and Pingala typically offer full hookups, 30- and 50-amp service, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Expect gravel pads, some shade, and family-oriented amenities such as pools, playgrounds, and dog parks. Firewood gathering is prohibited in state parks; buy on site or bring your own. Cell service is generally reliable across the area.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Prospect%20Heights,%20IllinoisDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Prospect Heights?
For nearly every RV you can rent on RVezy in Prospect Heights, your regular Illinois Class D driver's license is all you need. Most travel trailers, campervans, and Class C motorhomes fall under the 16,000 pound Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) threshold that triggers Illinois' special license rules. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and ID verification happens during checkout. Visiting from out of state or Canada? Your home license is recognized in Illinois. First time renting an RV? Filter for smaller Class B campervans or travel trailers under 25 feet for the easiest driving experience.

Coverage details and limits are explained at checkout and on the RVezy insurance and protection page.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat happens if I need to cancel my RV rental in Prospect Heights?
Booking your motorhome rental in Prospect Heights is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the individual host), and there is a money-back grace period after booking so you can lock in plans with confidence. Refund eligibility depends on factors like how far in advance you cancel and whether unusual circumstances such as severe weather are involved. The full policy details are on the RVezy Help Center and are explained at checkout. If your dates are flexible, book early to secure the best Lake Michigan summer weekends, knowing the grace period has your back.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Prospect Heights?
Yes, many RVezy hosts in Prospect Heights welcome four-legged co-pilots. Use the Pet-Friendly filter when searching, message the host any pet-specific questions, and you're set. The northwest suburbs are loaded with dog-friendly spots: Lake County Forest Preserves like Independence Grove allow leashed dogs on miles of trails, and Busse Woods Forest Preserve in nearby Elk Grove Village has a dedicated off-leash dog area. Camping with your pup? Illinois Beach State Park (about 45 minutes north) and Chain O'Lakes State Park both allow pets on leash in the campground. Pack a tie-out, water bowl, and waste bags, and your pet-friendly RV rental in Prospect Heights becomes a tail-wagging adventure.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.illinoisbeach.htmlCan the RV be delivered to me in Prospect Heights?
Yes, RV delivery in Prospect Heights is one of the smartest ways to start your trip, especially if you're a first-timer or staying at a specific campground. Many hosts deliver directly to your driveway, your campsite at Chain O'Lakes State Park, or Illinois Beach State Park, then set up the RV, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees typically range from $2 to $5 per mile from the host's location, with some offering free delivery within a set radius. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see which hosts offer it. It's the closest thing to a turnkey RV vacation you'll find.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Prospect%20Heights,%20IllinoisHow far can I drive on a Prospect Heights RV trip?
You can drive as far as your adventure takes you. Hosts set their own mileage policies, with many offering 100 to 150 free miles per night and additional miles around $0.30 to $0.45 each. Some listings even feature an RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for an epic Prospect Heights RV trip. From Prospect Heights, you're within easy reach of Starved Rock State Park (about 95 miles southwest), Wisconsin Dells (about 180 miles northwest), Indiana Dunes National Park (about 75 miles east), Milwaukee (about 90 miles north), and Door County, Wisconsin (about 245 miles north). Filter listings by mileage policy on RVezy and choose what fits your route.
nps.gov/indu/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Prospect Heights for an RV trip?
You're surrounded by great options for RV camping near Prospect Heights. Top picks include Illinois Beach State Park in Zion (about 45 minutes north, with electric sites near Lake Michigan), Chain O'Lakes State Park in Spring Grove (about 50 minutes northwest, with boating and fishing), Blackwell Forest Preserve in Warrenville (under an hour southwest, with shaded electric sites), and Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in Volo (a private resort with full hookups). For something farther, Shabbona Lake State Park sits about an hour west. Book Illinois state parks at ExploreMoreIL up to six months in advance, especially for summer weekends.
camp.exploremoreil.com/When is the best time of year to rent an RV in Prospect Heights?
Late May through early October is prime time for an RV rental in Illinois, with the sweet spot landing in June, September, and early October. Summer highs in Prospect Heights typically run 80 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit with warm, humid evenings perfect for campfires. Spring and fall bring crisp 55 to 70 degree days and smaller crowds at Illinois Beach State Park and Chain O'Lakes. July and August are peak (and priciest), so book early. Mid-September delivers warm Lake Michigan water, fall color along the Fox River, and shoulder-season pricing on your motorhome rental in Prospect Heights.
weather.gov/lot/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in the Chicago area?
You've got this, and you won't be alone figuring it out. Every RVezy host gives you a full orientation and walkthrough at pickup, covering driving tips, slide-outs, propane, water systems, and the dump valves. For your first time renting an RV near Prospect Heights, choose a Class B campervan or a smaller Class C (under 26 feet) for easier handling. Avoid I-90/94 through downtown Chicago at rush hour, stick to I-294 and I-355 to bypass the city, and watch for low-clearance areas on Lake Shore Drive (commercial vehicles and trucks are not permitted there). Do a practice loop in a large parking lot like Randhurst Village before heading north toward Lake Geneva or the Dells.
idot.illinois.gov/What if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you have a flat on I-90, a dead battery at Illinois Beach State Park, or a lockout at a Wisconsin campground. Your host is also typically reachable through the RVezy messaging app for quick questions about quirks of their specific RV. For bigger issues, RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Save the roadside number in your phone before you pull out of Prospect Heights and you'll have backup at every mile marker.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my RV rental from Prospect Heights into Wisconsin, Indiana, or Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome and a popular reason renters choose an RV road trip from Prospect Heights. Wisconsin (Lake Geneva, Milwaukee, Door County) and Indiana (Indiana Dunes National Park, Brown County) are easy weekend escapes covered by your protection plan. Cross-border travel into Canada depends on the host and coverage, so message the host directly from the listing to confirm before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the insurance and protection plan do not extend there. A Door County loop via Milwaukee and Manitowoc is one of the Midwest's most underrated RV trips.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Prospect Heights RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable in your trip budget, but it's easy to estimate. Travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves but reduce your tow vehicle's mileage to around 10 to 14 MPG. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A motorhomes typically get 6 to 10 MPG. Northwest suburban Chicago gas prices generally hover around $3.50 to $4.00 per gallon, with diesel running slightly higher. A round-trip to Wisconsin Dells (about 360 miles) in a Class C will run roughly $110 to $150 in fuel. Fill up in Indiana on your way to the Dunes; gas there is typically lower than Cook County thanks to lower fuel taxes.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Prospect Heights?
Plan ahead and you'll snag the best sites. Illinois state parks like Illinois Beach and Chain O'Lakes open reservations up to six months in advance through the ExploreMoreIL system, and prime Lake Michigan sites for July and August book out almost immediately. For Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends, reserve as soon as the window opens. Private RV parks like Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort and KOA properties around Chicago book up two to three months ahead for summer weekends. Shoulder season (April, May, September, October) you can often book just a week or two out. Weekday arrivals open up sites that weekend campers can't grab.
camp.exploremoreil.com/What are local driving conditions like around Prospect Heights?
Driving conditions are manageable once you know the rhythm. Prospect Heights sits near Palatine Road and Milwaukee Avenue with quick access to I-294 (the Tri-State Tollway) and I-90. Rush hours (7 to 9 AM and 4 to 6 PM) on I-294 and I-90 can crawl, so plan to depart mid-morning or after 7 PM. Most highways have a 70 MPH limit, dropping in the metro area. Illinois Tollway is all-electronic, so confirm your RV has an I-PASS transponder or pay unpaid tolls online within 14 days. Winter brings snow and ice from December through March. Take I-355 south to bypass O'Hare congestion when heading toward Starved Rock or southern Illinois.
illinoistollway.com/What amenities do campgrounds near Prospect Heights typically offer?
Most campgrounds within an hour of Prospect Heights have what you need for a comfortable RV stay. Illinois Beach State Park's Class A Premium sites include electric hookups, shared water hydrants, and a dump station at the campground entrance (no individual sewer hookups). Chain O'Lakes State Park offers electric sites plus showers and flush toilets. Private parks like Fish Lake Beach and the Chicago Northwest KOA in Union typically provide full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50-amp electric), Wi-Fi, laundry, and pools. Always confirm hookup type when booking. Carry a 50-to-30-amp adapter and a 25-foot freshwater hose; Illinois state parks require you to fill at the central spigot.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/camp.htmlWhat features and amenities can I expect inside a Prospect Heights RV rental?
Today's RVezy rentals come well-equipped. Expect a comfortable queen or king bed, a functional kitchen (stove, fridge, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control (AC and furnace), and seatbelted seating for travel. Many listings also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and basic cookware and linens (confirm in the listing). Generators, solar panels, and Wi-Fi hotspots are common in larger Class A and Class C rentals, great for boondocking trips to Wisconsin or working remotely from camp. Filter by Sleeps count to match your group size. Message the host to ask which kitchen and bedding items are included so you only pack what you actually need.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Prospect%20Heights,%20IllinoisWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about for a campervan rental in Prospect Heights?
Hosts offer add-ons that turn a good trip into a great one. Common extras for a campervan rental in Prospect Heights include camping chairs and tables ($15 to $30), bedding and linen kits ($25 to $50), kitchen packages, bike racks, generators, and even kayaks or paddleboards. Pickup is typically at the host's home or storage location around Prospect Heights, Mount Prospect, Arlington Heights, or Wheeling, and many hosts offer delivery to your campground for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies usually allow 100 to 150 free miles per night, with overage around $0.35 per mile (some offer unlimited). Pickup in late morning so you arrive at your campground with daylight to set up.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Prospect%20Heights,%20IllinoisHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and handled entirely through the RVezy platform: no cash, no checks. You pay through the RVezy checkout using a credit or debit card to lock in your dates. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is held separately from your booking payment before your trip starts and released after the host confirms the RV is returned in good condition, usually within a few days. To avoid deposit issues on your RV rental in Prospect Heights: document the RV's condition at pickup with photos, return it on time with fuel and waste tanks per the host's instructions, and keep things tidy.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Prospect Heights during winter?
Yes, and a winter RV trip can be magical if you plan smart. Some RVezy hosts in the Prospect Heights area rent year-round, particularly four-season travel trailers and motorhomes equipped with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and propane furnaces. Most Illinois state park campgrounds (including Illinois Beach) close their full campground season in late fall, but private parks and a few KOAs operate year-round with shore power. Winter highs in Prospect Heights run 25 to 35 degrees Fahrenheit with regular snow from December through February. Plan a Galena weekend, a Starved Rock ice-canyon hike, or a road trip south to Shawnee National Forest where temperatures are 10 to 15 degrees milder.
