Campgrounds and RV parks near River Grove, IL

River Grove is a short drive from downtown Chicago, giving RV travelers access to the Museum Campus, Navy Pier, Millennium Park, and the Lake Michigan lakefront. The village borders the Cook County Forest Preserves, which offer paved bike paths, picnic groves, and the Des Plaines River Trail for walking and cycling. Families staying at Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort are within reach of Six Flags Great America, the Volo Auto Museum, and Lake County Forest Preserves, plus Metra service for day trips into Chicago without towing. At the north end of the region, the 4,160-acre Illinois Beach State Park features swimming, boating, hiking, fishing, picnicking and camping, along with the Zion Bike Trail connecting the North and South units. Birding is a draw, with wetlands, dunes, and oak savannas supporting a wide range of species.

The camping season around Chicago is short and concentrated. Most private and state campgrounds run from spring through mid-fall, with peak demand between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The campground at Illinois Beach State Park is open from April 1 through Nov. 15, and Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort operates a similar spring-to-fall season. Summer brings the warmest, most reliable weather but also the heaviest bookings, especially on weekends. Due to the high use of this area on summer weekends, reservations are recommended at Illinois Beach. Spring and early fall are quieter, with cooler nights and fewer crowds. The park does not open until mid-April, which means there is less traffic and congestion. Temperatures are still mild, but the winds can be chilly at times. Winter effectively shuts down tent and RV camping in the region. Snow, cold snaps, and frozen water lines close most seasonal parks, and camping in Illinois Beach State Park is closed from January through March.

Expect suburban and light-industrial surroundings near River Grove, with campgrounds tucked into forest preserves, lakefronts, or purpose-built resort parcels. Traffic on the Kennedy, Tri-State, and Edens expressways can add significant time to weekend arrivals, so plan check-in outside rush hours. At Illinois Beach, the campground in the southern unit provides 241 Class A Premium sites with electricity and access to showers and sanitary facilities. Campers must obtain a camping permit from the park staff, and must have a camping unit upon arrival. Private resorts in the area lean family-oriented, with pools, playgrounds, courts, dog runs, and organized weekend activities common at Fish Lake Beach and similar parks. Sites at older resorts can be tight and gravel, so measure the rig and confirm maximum length when booking.
