Camping near Riverdale, Illinois
Riverdale sits in Cook County on the far south side of the Chicago metropolitan area, roughly 20 miles south of the Loop and about an hour's drive from the Indiana Dunes shoreline. RV travelers use it as a staging point for city visits, Lake Michigan beaches, and the Cook County Forest Preserves that ring the region.
Few full-hookup RV parks sit inside city limits, so most travelers head to private campgrounds south and east of town. Emerald Trails Campground and Pingala RV Resort are among the closer private options, while Cedar Lake Ministries RV Park and Cedar Lake Bible Retreat and RV Park operate in the Cedar Lake, Indiana area to the southeast. Enchanted Shores in Peotone adds another nearby option south of the city.
Expect a mix of paved and gravel sites, wooded loops, and electric-only setups at public campgrounds in the wider region. Traffic through the south suburbs can be heavy on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings, so plan arrival and departure times accordingly.
Things to do around Riverdale
Downtown Chicago is the headline attraction: Millennium Park, the Museum Campus, Navy Pier, and the lakefront trail are all reachable by car or by Metra Electric commuter rail from nearby stations. Families with an RV base south of the city can day-trip in without towing through downtown traffic.
Outdoor options cluster around the Cook County Forest Preserves, with paved bike paths, fishing lakes, and picnic groves in the Sag Valley and Palos systems to the west. Indiana Dunes National Park and Indiana Dunes State Park sit about an hour east, offering beaches, dune hikes, and shoreline birding.
Cedar Lake, Indiana provides swimming, small-boat access, and lakeside dining, and it pairs well with a stay at one of the Cedar Lake area campgrounds.

The camping season in the Chicago area runs mainly April through October. Most private RV parks near Riverdale open in early to mid-April and close by late October or early November, though a few Cook County Forest Preserve camps stay open year-round for winter-ready rigs. Dunewood Campground inside Indiana Dunes National Park operates April through November.
Summer is the peak stretch. July and August bring warm, humid days, frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and the highest booking demand, especially on holiday weekends and around large Chicago festivals. Beach and lake access at Indiana Dunes is at its busiest, and parking lots at popular access points fill early.
Spring and fall are quieter and cooler. Wildflowers and migratory birds pass through the dunes and forest preserves in April and May, and September and October bring cool nights and fall color through the region. Winter camping is limited: sub-freezing temperatures, heavy snow, and lake-effect events can shut down services and roads.

How to book campsites in the area
Private RV parks near Riverdale, including Emerald Trails Campground, Pingala RV Resort, and Enchanted Shores, generally take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Summer weekends can fill weeks or months out, so booking early matters, particularly for pull-through and full-hookup sites suited to rental rigs.
For federal sites, Dunewood Campground at Indiana Dunes National Park reserves through Recreation.gov on a rolling six-month window, with sites for the upcoming season first released in mid-November. Indiana Dunes State Park uses the Indiana DNR ReserveAmerica system and allows bookings up to six months in advance.
Cook County Forest Preserve campgrounds, such as Camp Bullfrog Lake, Camp Sullivan, and Camp Shabbona Woods, are reserved through the Forest Preserves' Camp Cook County system at fpdcc.com or by phone. Check length limits and hookup type before booking, since public sites are often electric-only and cap RVs around 38 to 40 feet.
What to expect on the ground
Sites near Riverdale range from tightly spaced urban-adjacent parks to more spread-out rural loops in Indiana. Expect traffic noise at parks close to interstates and rail lines, and quieter conditions at Cedar Lake area campgrounds and inside the national and state parks to the east.
Hookups vary. Private parks typically offer 30 and 50 amp electric, water, and sewer. Public campgrounds in the region often provide electric only or electric with water, so arrive with fresh water tanks filled and holding tanks empty. Camp Bullfrog Lake has a dump station, while some Cook County camps do not, so plan a dump stop on the way out.
Cell coverage is strong throughout the metro area but can drop inside wooded sections of the dunes and forest preserves. Mosquitoes and ticks are active from late spring through early fall, so pack repellent and secure food at any wooded site.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Riverdale, IL
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Riverdale, IL?
RV rental in Riverdale, IL is surprisingly affordable, with most RVezy bookings landing between $95 and $225 per night depending on size and season. Travel trailers and pop-ups are the budget sweet spot, while Class C motorhomes typically run $175 to $275 nightly. For a cheap RV rental in Riverdale, target shoulder seasons (late April or September) when Cook County demand drops and hosts often discount weekly stays. Filter by price and check the weekly or monthly discount on each listing before booking. Pro tip: booking Sunday through Thursday near Chicago can save you 15 to 25 percent versus a Friday pickup heading toward Lake Michigan.
enjoyillinois.com/plan-your-trip/places-to-stay/camping-and-rv-parks-in-illinois/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Riverdale?
Good news: for the vast majority of RV rentals in Riverdale, your regular Class D driver's license is all you need. Illinois exempts personal-use recreational vehicles from Commercial Driver's License (CDL) requirements, and most RVezy rentals (travel trailers, campervans, and Class C motorhomes) come in well under the 16,000-pound threshold where Illinois bumps up the license class. You will need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your identity and license right in the app during booking. International visitors should grab an International Driving Permit (IDP) from their home country before the trip. That's it, you're set to roll.
ilsos.gov/departments/drivers/drivers-license/cdl/cdl.htmlWhat protection and roadside coverage is included with my Riverdale RV rental?
Every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can rent an RV in Riverdale knowing you are covered before you turn the key. You choose your protection level (Basic, Standard, or Premium) during checkout, not the host, and each tier offers different coverage limits for damage during your trip. Roadside assistance is included with every protection plan, so help with a flat tire on I-94 or a battery jump on the way to Indiana Dunes is one tap away, day or night. Review the plan details at booking and head out with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Riverdale RV trip?
Cancelling is lower-risk than most travelers expect. RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy that applies to every booking, and refund amounts depend on how far you are from your trip start date when you cancel. RVezy also reviews qualifying situations like major travel disruptions on a case-by-case basis. If a Lake Michigan storm or a sudden change of plans gets in the way of your Riverdale RV trip, contact RVezy support and they will walk you through your options. Book with confidence and lock in those summer dates.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Riverdale?
Absolutely, plenty of pet-friendly RV rentals in Riverdale welcome four-legged copilots. Just flip on the Pet-Friendly filter when you search RVezy and you'll see only listings where dogs (and sometimes cats) are pre-approved by the host. Many Riverdale-area hosts charge a small pet cleaning fee, which is shown upfront on the listing. Once you're rolling, the Cook County Forest Preserves around Riverdale are leash-friendly, and Indiana Dunes National Park allows leashed pets on most trails and at Dunewood Campground (about 45 miles east). Pro tip: pack a collapsible water bowl, summer pavement near Lake Michigan gets hot.
nps.gov/indu/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campground or home in Riverdale?
Yes, RV delivery in Riverdale is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who would rather skip driving a big rig through south Chicago traffic. Many local hosts will drop the motorhome or trailer right at your driveway, a Cook County Forest Preserve campground like Camp Sullivan, or Indiana Dunes State Park. Use the Delivery filter, message the host with your destination, and they will quote a delivery fee (typically based on mileage from their location). At drop-off they level the RV, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. It is the easiest way to start an Illinois RV vacation.
fpdcc.com/places/camping/How far can I travel and is there an RV rental with unlimited mileage near Riverdale?
You've got room to roam. Most Riverdale RVezy hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage for an upgraded daily rate (great for longer Illinois RV trips). Additional miles typically run $0.30 to $0.45 each, shown clearly on every listing. From Riverdale you can easily reach Indiana Dunes National Park (45 miles), Starved Rock State Park (90 miles), Lake Geneva, Wisconsin (95 miles), and Galena, IL (165 miles), all within a comfortable mileage allowance. Planning a bigger loop to Door County or the Upper Peninsula? Message the host before booking to negotiate an unlimited-mile add-on.
enjoyillinois.com/plan-your-trip/places-to-stay/camping-and-rv-parks-in-illinois/Where are the best campgrounds near Riverdale, IL?
You have great options for RV camping in Riverdale. Camp Sullivan in Oak Forest (about 10 miles west) is a Cook County Forest Preserve favorite with electric sites, modern bathhouses, and trail access. Camp Shabbona Woods in South Holland sits just minutes from Riverdale and offers wooded electric sites. Camp Bullfrog Lake in Willow Springs is a highly rated local pick, with lake views and miles of Palos-area trails. About 45 miles east, Dunewood Campground inside Indiana Dunes National Park offers showers, a dump station, and quick beach access. For full hookups, Indiana Dunes State Park Campground in Chesterton is a strong family choice. Book early, summer weekends fill fast.
fpdcc.com/places/camping/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Riverdale?
Late May through early October is prime time for a Riverdale RV trip, with June and September being the sweet spot. Summer highs in the Chicago south suburbs average 82 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit, perfect for Lake Michigan beach days and Cook County trail rides. July humidity can spike, so AC and shaded sites help. Fall foliage peaks mid-to-late October when Indiana Dunes maples burn red and gold. Winters bring lows in the teens with regular snow, so most local campgrounds close November through March. Insider tip: book the weekend after Labor Day, kids are back in school, campgrounds are quieter, and the lake water is still swimmable.
forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?CityName=Riverdale&state=IL&site=LOT&textField1=41.6446&textField2=-87.6347I've never rented an RV before. Is a Riverdale RV rental beginner-friendly?
First time renting an RV? You're going to be fine, and Riverdale is actually a great launchpad. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, covering propane, water, generator, slide-outs, and dump procedures so you don't leave guessing. For total peace of mind, choose a campervan rental in Riverdale (think Class B Sprinter-style) or a small Class C motorhome under 25 feet, which drives much like a U-Haul and parks at any standard site. Avoid downtown Chicago in your first hours behind the wheel; instead head south on I-57 or east on I-80 toward the Indiana Dunes for an easy, low-stress start.
fhwa.dot.gov/What happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
Help is always a phone call away. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance with your protection plan, so a dead battery on the Bishop Ford Freeway, a flat tire near Indiana Dunes, or a stuck slide-out at Camp Bullfrog Lake is handled with one quick call. For mechanical or appliance questions, your host is your first text, most Riverdale hosts respond quickly and many have walked guests through fixes by video chat. If something bigger comes up, RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip. Save the roadside number in your phone at pickup and enjoy the drive.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Riverdale RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from Riverdale across state lines is one of the most popular use cases on RVezy. Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Iowa are all within an easy day's drive, and your protection package travels with you across the U.S. border zones most hosts allow. Cross-border travel to Canada (think Toronto via I-94, or a Lake Superior loop) is possible with many hosts but needs to be confirmed and approved in your booking conversation because of insurance documentation. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Message the host before booking with your full route and you'll get a clear yes or no, fast.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Budgeting fuel for your Riverdale motorhome rental is easier than it looks. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes run 8 to 12 MPG, and large Class A rigs land around 7 to 9 MPG. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle, usually subtracting 30 to 40 percent from its solo MPG. Illinois gas prices typically run a bit above the national average due to state and Cook County fuel taxes, so consider filling up across the border in Indiana (often $0.30 to $0.60 cheaper per gallon) before heading east. A weekend trip to Indiana Dunes in a Class C usually costs $60 to $90 in fuel. Easy math, easy trip.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Riverdale?
For summer weekends, book early, the popular spots near Riverdale fill within days of release. Indiana Dunes National Park's Dunewood Campground opens reservations on Recreation.gov on a rolling six-month window starting November 15 for the following season. Indiana Dunes State Park uses ReserveAmerica (Indiana DNR) and also books up to six months ahead. Cook County Forest Preserve campgrounds like Camp Sullivan and Camp Shabbona Woods take reservations through the Forest Preserves of Cook County website and typically have more weekday availability. Insider move: check Recreation.gov 7 to 14 days before your dates, last-minute cancellations open up surprisingly often.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/258887What are the local driving conditions like around Riverdale?
Riverdale sits in Chicago's south suburbs at the crossroads of I-94 (Bishop Ford), I-294, and I-80, which means you have fast highway access in every direction, but rush hour (6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 6:30 p.m.) into downtown Chicago is genuinely heavy. The roads themselves are flat and easy for RVs, no mountain passes or steep grades. Watch for low railroad bridges along Halsted and Indiana Avenue (some under 12 feet) and avoid Lake Shore Drive entirely, as RVs are restricted. Heading to Indiana Dunes? Skyway tolls accept I-PASS and E-ZPass. Pro tip: leave Riverdale by 9:30 a.m. on Friday to beat the weekend lakeshore rush.
idot.illinois.gov/travel-information/indexWhat amenities will I find at local campgrounds, and where can I dump and fill water?
Campgrounds near Riverdale offer a mix you'll want to plan around. Cook County Forest Preserve sites (Camp Sullivan, Camp Bullfrog Lake, Camp Shabbona Woods) provide electric hookups, modern bathhouses, fire rings, and picnic tables, but no in-site water or sewer, so arrive with full fresh tanks. Dunewood Campground at Indiana Dunes National Park has a central dump station and potable water fill at the entrance. For full hookups, head to Indiana Dunes State Park (electric) or commercial parks like Yogi Bear's Jellystone in Pine Country, Indiana. Quick tip: top off water at the host's home before leaving Riverdale, it's the easiest start to any trip.
fpdcc.com/places/camping/What's included inside a typical RV rental from Riverdale (beds, kitchen, bathroom, Wi-Fi)?
Most Riverdale RV rentals come fully equipped for a family RV trip in Riverdale right out of the gate. Expect sleeping for 4 to 8 (queen bed, convertible dinette, bunk or cab-over), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, plus a wet bath with toilet and shower. Air conditioning, furnace, and propane are standard. Many hosts include linens, pots and pans, camp chairs, and outdoor mats in the base price or as add-ons. Wi-Fi hotspots and generators are common add-ons (typically $10 to $25 per night). Every seat used while driving has a seatbelt, so confirm sleeps versus seatbelt count if you're bringing the whole crew. Easy living on wheels.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/seat-beltsWhat popular add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Riverdale hosts make customization easy. Common add-ons include generators ($15 to $25/night), bike racks, kayaks, propane fire pits, portable Wi-Fi, linens packages, and outdoor camp kits, all selectable during booking. Pickup is usually at the host's home in the south Chicago suburbs, with Instant Book listings letting you confirm in seconds without waiting on host approval. Mileage allowances are clearly listed (typically 100 to 150 miles per night included). Festival-Friendly filters help if you're heading to events like Lollapalooza or the Pitchfork Music Festival. Insider tip: bundle delivery plus a generator if you're booking a non-electric site at Dunewood, you'll thank yourself by sunset.
enjoyillinois.com/plan-your-trip/places-to-stay/camping-and-rv-parks-in-illinois/How do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple, secure, and handled inside the RVezy platform, never directly with the host. You pay with a credit card at booking, and your total (rental, fees, protection, taxes) is shown upfront with no surprises. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment shortly before pickup, and it is released after drop-off once the host confirms the RV came back in the same condition. To avoid issues: do the pre-trip walkthrough together, take time-stamped photos and videos at pickup and return, and dump tanks before bringing it back. Smooth in, smooth out, deposit back in your account.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations within easy reach of Riverdale?
Riverdale is a fantastic launchpad for an RV road trip from Riverdale in any direction. Indiana Dunes National Park is just 45 miles east (about an hour) for 15 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline. Starved Rock State Park sits 90 miles southwest with canyons and waterfalls. Lake Geneva, Wisconsin is 95 miles north for lakefront wineries and resort vibes. Galena, IL (165 miles west) offers rolling hills and historic downtown charm, and Door County, Wisconsin (250 miles north) is the ultimate long-weekend escape. For families, Wisconsin Dells is 200 miles northwest and packed with waterparks. Pick a direction, fuel up in Indiana, and go.
