Camping near Round Lake, Illinois
Round Lake sits in Lake County in northeast Illinois, roughly 45 minutes northwest of Chicago and a short drive south of the Wisconsin border. The area is defined by the Chain O'Lakes, the largest concentration of natural lakes in Illinois. Chain O' Lakes State Park borders three natural lakes, Grass, Marie and Nippersink, plus the Fox River that connects the other seven lakes that make up the Chain: Bluff, Fox, Pistakee, Channel, Petite, Catherine and Redhead. That waterway shapes most of the camping options within a half-hour drive of town.
RV travelers have a mix of public and private choices. Chain O' Lakes State Park spans both McHenry and Lake counties and offers Turner Lake South among its camp areas. Private resorts such as Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in nearby Volo add full-hookup sites and family amenities, while Grass Lake Marina and RV Park and Fox River Recreation cater to boaters along the Chain. Just over the Wisconsin line, the Kenosha County Fair Association in Wilmot offers fairgrounds-style RV camping with quick access back into the Round Lake area.
Things to do around Round Lake
Water defines the trip. The Chain O'Lakes system supports boating, kayaking, swimming and fishing, with bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, muskie, northern pike, bullhead, catfish, and yellow and white bass among the popular catches. Boat and canoe rentals are available seasonally inside Chain O' Lakes State Park through the park concessionaire.
On land, Chain O' Lakes State Park features seven picnic areas, four trail systems for hiking, biking and birdwatching, and an archery range. Families staying at Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort have a sandy beach, heated pool, hot tub, mini golf and organized activities on site. Across the state line at the Kenosha County Fair Association, campers can catch Wilmot Raceway events on most summer Saturday nights and the Wilmot Flea Market on Sundays from April through October.

Camping season around Round Lake is short and concentrated. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort runs from May 1st through October 15th, and the campground at the Kenosha County Fairgrounds is available from May 1 through September 30. Memorial Day through Labor Day is peak demand, with weekends booking out well in advance, especially around July 4th and the Kenosha County Fair in the third week of August.
Late spring brings unsettled weather and high water on the Chain, but trails dry out and bug pressure stays manageable. Summer is warm, humid and busy on the lakes, with boat traffic heaviest on weekends. Early fall is the sweet spot for RVers: cooler nights, fewer crowds, and good fishing. Hunting, ice fishing, ice skating and cross-country skiing are offered at Chain O' Lakes State Park in the fall and winter months. Summer hours at the state park terminate the last weekend in October, when the entire park closes for hunting, so check access before a late-season trip.

Very very helpful to have a sizable fridge and freezer. Microwave a big plus. Solar panels and Shore Power allowed us to use comfy air-connditioning. Thanks.

Bogdan is an incredible host. He patiently explained everything about the RV, was reachable and helpful when I needed some advice. Camper is well kept and is a labor of love. We really enjoyed the experience.

How to book a site
Reservation systems differ by operator. For Chain O' Lakes State Park, including Turner Lake South, camping reservations are accepted through ExploreMoreIL, and the maximum stay for campsites is 14 nights in a 30 day period. State park sites release on a rolling window, so book Friday and Saturday nights as soon as the calendar opens for summer holidays.
Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort takes reservations directly through its website and front office, with a two-night minimum common on summer weekends. Grass Lake Marina and RV Park and Fox River Recreation handle bookings directly. The Kenosha County Fair Association lists availability through Campspot. For all of them, holding a confirmed reservation is strongly recommended before traveling, since walk-up availability is rare from June through August.
What to expect on site
Public and private campgrounds in this area feel quite different. State park sites at Turner Lake South are Class B-Premium, meaning a basic site with vehicle access and shared facilities rather than full hookups. All campers must bring their own firewood, no one is allowed to pick up wood in the park. Sites are wooded and quieter, but cell service can be patchy.
Private resorts run busier and louder. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort offers a heated outdoor pool, hot tub, dog park, indoor pickleball court, basketball courts, a softball field, playgrounds, and a full calendar of activities at the Pavilion, with full hookup RV sites, long term RV sites, cabins and lakefront tent sites. Fairgrounds-style camping at Kenosha County offers 30-amp and 50-amp hookups but tighter spacing, and event weekends can be lively well into the evening.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Round Lake, IL
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Round Lake, IL?
RV rental in Round Lake is more affordable than most people expect, with travel trailers often starting around $90 to $150 per night and Class C motorhomes typically ranging from $175 to $295 per night on RVezy. Because hosts set their own rates, you'll find plenty of options across budgets, and shoulder-season trips in May or late September tend to be the best value. To find a cheap RV rental in Round Lake, filter by price, look for listings with included generator hours, and consider mid-week pickups when many hosts drop their rates. Booking 6 to 8 weeks ahead of summer weekends locks in the best prices before Chain O'Lakes demand spikes.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Round%20Lake%2C%20IllinoisWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Round Lake, IL?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Round Lake. There's no Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement required for personal RVs you can book on RVezy, including Class A, Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, and travel trailers. You'll need to be 25 or older to be an approved driver, and RVezy verifies your identity through the booking platform so the process is quick and entirely online. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP), and you're set. Most first-time renters in Lake County are surprised by how simple it is.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs insurance and roadside assistance included with my Round Lake RV rental?
Yes, every RVezy booking in Round Lake includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road with real peace of mind. You choose your protection level at checkout (not the host), and it helps cover eligible damage to the RV during your trip. If you get a flat on I-94 or run into trouble near Chain O'Lakes State Park, one call to roadside assistance gets help dispatched. It's not traditional auto insurance, but it's significant financial protection that makes a Round Lake RV trip genuinely low-stress.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my plans change?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets a clear cancellation policy on every reservation (hosts don't control this), and there's a grace period after booking where you can cancel for a full refund. The exact refund amount depends on how far out from your trip start date you cancel. You'll see all the details before you confirm payment, and RVezy support is available to walk you through your options. If a host ever has to cancel, RVezy refunds you or provides travel credit so your Round Lake RV trip stays protected.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Round Lake?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Round Lake is easy to find: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see listings whose hosts welcome dogs (and sometimes cats too). Lake County is one of the most dog-friendly corners of Illinois, with leash-friendly trails at Lakewood Forest Preserve, Rollins Savanna, and Grant Woods Forest Preserve, plus Chain O'Lakes State Park, which allows leashed pets in designated campground loops. Pack a tie-out, water bowl, and your pup's vaccination records. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and any size or breed preferences.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.chainolakes.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway?
Yes, RV delivery in Round Lake is one of the most popular booking options, especially for first-time renters. Many RVezy hosts will tow or drive the motorhome directly to your site at Chain O'Lakes State Park, Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort, or your own driveway in Round Lake Beach, Hainesville, or Grayslake. They'll level the rig, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. To find delivery-ready listings, flip on the Delivery filter and check the host's delivery radius (many cover the Chain O'Lakes region and parts of the northwest Chicago suburbs). It's the easiest way to skip the learning curve and start your trip relaxed.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Round%20Lake%2C%20IllinoisHow far can I travel on my Round Lake RV trip, and is unlimited mileage available?
You've got real range from Round Lake: many RVezy hosts offer generous daily mileage allowances, and some list RV rentals with unlimited mileage, ideal for longer loops through Wisconsin or Michigan. Hosts set their own mileage policy, so you'll see the exact daily allowance and any per-mile overage fee right on the listing page before you book. For a quick weekend at Chain O'Lakes (about 20 miles away) a standard allowance is plenty, but if you're driving to Door County, WI (about 240 miles) or the Indiana Dunes (about 110 miles), filter for higher-mileage or unlimited-mileage listings. Map your route first, then match the listing to your plan.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Round%20Lake%2C%20IllinoisWhere are the best campgrounds near Round Lake, IL for RV camping?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping near Round Lake. Chain O'Lakes State Park (about 20 minutes north in Spring Grove) offers multiple campgrounds with electric hookups for RVs and wooded loops for a quieter feel. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in nearby Volo has full-hookup sites, a swim beach, and family activities. Illinois Beach State Park, about 30 miles east on Lake Michigan, has electric hookup sites and beautiful shoreline. For a quieter vibe, Lehman's Lakeside RV Resort in Marengo is roughly a 45-minute drive west. Book early, summer weekends fill quickly.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.chainolakes.htmlWhen is the best time of year for an RV road trip from Round Lake?
Late May through early October is prime time for an RV road trip from Round Lake, with peak conditions in June, July, and August (highs typically in the upper 70s to mid-80s F) and a gorgeous shoulder window in September and early October when fall colors light up the Chain O'Lakes and crowds thin out. May can still see chilly nights in the 40s, and winters drop well below freezing with regular snow, so many local campgrounds operate seasonally from spring through late October. For the smartest-money trip, target the first two weeks of September: warm days, cool sleeping weather, and easier campground bookings.
weather.gov/lot/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving it?
You're going to do great. A first time renting an RV is far easier than most people expect, especially when you start from a quiet base like Round Lake instead of downtown Chicago. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, water, propane, generator, and dump procedures, plus you can text them mid-trip with questions. Class C motorhomes and small travel trailers drive much like an oversized van or SUV, and local roads like IL-120 and US-12 are wide and forgiving. Pro tip: do a slow practice lap around a large, empty parking lot before heading to your campground, you'll feel confident in 15 minutes.
ilsos.gov/publications/pdf_publications/dsd_a112.pdfWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy rental in Round Lake includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing, no matter where you are, from the Chain O'Lakes boat ramps to a Wisconsin Dells detour. Your host is also a phone call or text away for quick fixes (an awning that won't retract, a water pump acting up), and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Keep the roadside number saved in your phone and snap photos of any issue. Most hiccups are resolved quickly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip destinations I can reach from Round Lake?
Round Lake sits in a sweet spot for a Midwest RV road trip. Popular runs include Lake Geneva, WI (about 25 miles north) for lakefront dining and resort beaches; Wisconsin Dells (about 150 miles northwest) for waterparks and Dells boat tours; Door County, WI (about 240 miles north) for cherry orchards and Lake Michigan shoreline; Indiana Dunes National Park (about 110 miles southeast) for towering dunes and beaches; and Starved Rock State Park (about 100 miles southwest) for canyon hikes and waterfalls. Cross-border travel into Wisconsin is allowed on most RVezy rentals; trips into Canada require host approval, and travel to Mexico is not permitted.
enjoyillinois.com/explore/places-to-stay/camping/How much should I budget for fuel on my Round Lake RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost, so it helps to plan ahead. Class C motorhomes around Round Lake average about 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG), Class B campervans often get 16 to 20 MPG, and a truck towing a travel trailer typically returns 10 to 13 MPG. Illinois gas prices in Lake County tend to run a bit higher than the state average because of local fuel taxes, so for cheaper fill-ups, top off in southern Wisconsin (just over the state line in Pleasant Prairie or Kenosha) where prices are often noticeably less per gallon. Budget roughly $90 to $140 in fuel for a typical 3-day Chain O'Lakes weekend.
tax.illinois.gov/research/taxinformation/excise/motorfuel.htmlHow far in advance should I book a campground near Round Lake?
Book early and you'll have your pick of the best sites. Chain O'Lakes State Park and other Illinois state park campgrounds open reservations up to six months in advance through the Illinois state parks reservation portal, and summer weekends (especially around Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day) fill within days of release. Private parks like Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort and Lehman's Lakeside RV Resort take reservations directly and also book up 2 to 3 months out for peak weekends. Pro tip: if you strike out on a Saturday night, grab a Thursday-to-Friday stay instead. Midweek availability is usually wide open, and rates are lower.
camp.exploremoreil.com/What are driving conditions like around Round Lake?
Driving an RV around Round Lake is refreshingly mellow compared to downtown Chicago. Local roads like IL-134, IL-120, and US-12 are wide, mostly flat, and easy to navigate, and you can reach I-94 or I-294 in about 20 to 30 minutes for longer hauls. Avoid the Kennedy and Edens expressways during weekday rush hours (roughly 6 to 9 AM and 3 to 7 PM) where construction zones and tight lanes can be stressful in a larger rig. Watch for low clearances under some older railroad bridges in nearby Libertyville and Mundelein; check posted heights before passing under. Winter brings ice and occasional lake-effect snow, so November through March trips need extra caution.
gettingaroundillinois.com/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Round Lake?
Local campgrounds make RV life easy. Chain O'Lakes State Park offers electric hookups (no water or sewer at most sites), potable water fill stations, a centralized dump station, flush toilets, and showers in season. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in Volo has full hookups (water, electric, sewer at the site), a swim beach, and a camp store. Illinois Beach State Park provides electric sites, a dump station, showers, and beach access. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving the host's home base, and use the dump station on your way out rather than the morning of departure when lines form. Pack leveling blocks for some of the older, sloped sites.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.chainolakes.htmlWhat's included inside a typical Round Lake RV rental?
You'll be impressed how move-in ready these rigs are. A typical motorhome rental in Round Lake comes equipped with sleeping for 4 to 8, a kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink, cookware), a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control (furnace and air conditioning), a dinette, and seatbelted seats for travel. Most listings include a generator (great for boondocking), house batteries, fresh water tank, and outdoor awning. Wi-Fi and TVs are common but vary by listing, so check the amenities section on the listing page. Travel trailers offer similar interior setups but you'll tow with your own truck or one the host arranges. Bedding and kitchen kits are often available as add-ons.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Round%20Lake%2C%20IllinoisWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for my rental?
You can customize your campervan rental in Round Lake to match exactly how you want to camp. Popular add-ons include bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, bike racks, generators, portable grills, and propane fire pits. Many hosts also offer delivery and setup, dump and refill service at return, and extra mileage packages if you're planning a longer Wisconsin or Michigan loop. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Round Lake, Grayslake, Lake Villa, or another Lake County town, with a 30 to 45 minute walkthrough. Check the listing's mileage policy and any per-mile overage fee upfront so there are no surprises.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Round%20Lake%2C%20IllinoisHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and fully online: when you book your RV rental in Round Lake, you pay through the secure RVezy platform (no cash or off-platform transfers, ever), with your card charged on a clear schedule shown at checkout. A separate refundable security deposit is held before your trip starts to cover incidentals like minor damage, missing equipment, or returning with empty fuel or full waste tanks. As long as you return the RV in the same condition you got it, the deposit is released back to you after the trip. Pro tip: take time-stamped photos of the exterior, interior, mileage, and tank levels at pickup and dropoff. It's the simplest way to avoid any disputes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Round Lake during the winter?
Yes, a winter RV rental in Round Lake is possible and can be a memorable adventure if you plan smart. Some hosts keep their rigs winter-ready with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and extra propane capacity, which you'll want for January lows that can dip into the single digits. Most Illinois state park campgrounds close their water systems in late fall, but shore-power sites stay open at select locations and nearby private parks like Lehman's Lakeside often offer winter stays. Use the RV mainly as a heated basecamp for ice fishing on Fox Lake, snowshoeing at Volo Bog State Natural Area, or a holiday-light road trip. Message the host first to confirm cold-weather readiness.
