Campgrounds near Round Lake Beach
Round Lake Beach sits in Lake County, Illinois, at the southern edge of the Chain O'Lakes region, the heart of Illinois' largest concentration of natural lakes. Chain O'Lakes State Park borders three natural lakes (Grass, Marie, and Nippersink) and the Fox River, and contains a 44-acre lake within its boundaries. The 2,793-acre state park and adjoining 3,230-acre conservation area sit in the northeastern corner of Illinois in both McHenry and Lake counties.
RV renters typically choose between the state park and privately run resorts. The park has more than 230 campsites and a youth group camp, with reservations accepted at ExploreMoreIL or by calling 866-716-6550. Turner Lake South is one of the park's Class B-Premium areas. Nearby private options include Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in Volo, Grass Lake Marina and RV Park in Antioch, Fox River Recreation, and the Kenosha County Fair Association grounds across the Wisconsin line.
The park is 60 miles northwest of Chicago, 20 miles west of Lake Michigan, and only 4 miles south of the Illinois/Wisconsin border, which puts most campgrounds within a short drive of Round Lake Beach.
Things to do near Round Lake Beach
The Chain O'Lakes is the region's main draw. Boating rentals operate seasonally through the park concessionaire, Gill's on the Chain, with motorboats, rowboats, canoes, and kayaks available. Fishing in the Chain includes bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, muskie, northern pike, bullhead, catfish, and yellow and white bass.
On land, the park features seven picnic areas and four trail systems, including the 2.25-mile Nature's Way hiking trail from Oak Grove Picnic Area, a quarter-mile accessible trail at Pike Marsh North, 8 miles of equestrian trail, and a 6-mile biking/hiking trail.
Families staying at Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort have access to a sandy swim beach, heated pool, boat rentals, mini golf, and weekend activity programming on site. Volo Bog State Natural Area and the Kenosha County lakefront are within easy driving range.

Peak season runs late spring through early fall. Summer is the most popular time for RV camping in the Chain O'Lakes area, with warm water, active wildlife, and busy parks where nearby RV reservations become harder to secure. Private resorts operate on a shorter window than the state park, generally running from spring through mid to late October.
Fall brings quieter campgrounds and strong fishing. Autumn in northern Illinois is too cold for swimming, but the fishing stays strong and cooler temperatures make hiking through changing leaves more comfortable. Summer hours at the state park run 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. from April 1 through the last weekend of October, after which the park closes for all activities except hunting from the beginning of November until January 1.
Winter access at Chain O'Lakes State Park is limited. Hunting, ice fishing, ice skating, and cross-country skiing are offered in the fall and winter months.

How to book a campground near Round Lake Beach
State park sites are booked through the Illinois DNR reservation system. Camping reservations for Chain O'Lakes State Park are accepted at ExploreMoreIL or by calling 866-716-6550. Booking well ahead matters: given the park's proximity to Chicago, summer reservations should be made months in advance. Maximum stay for campsites is 14 nights in a 30-day period.
Private campgrounds book directly. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort takes reservations by phone and through its website, and offers full-hookup RV sites, long-term sites, cabins, and lakefront tent sites. Grass Lake Marina and RV Park handles bookings by phone; some marina sites are water-access only, so confirm site type before arriving with an RV.
A responsible adult 18 or older must have a camp shelter and set it up at time of registration, all campers must bring their own firewood since gathering wood in the park is not allowed, and alcohol is prohibited in the campgrounds.
What to expect at Round Lake Beach campgrounds
Sites split into two clear categories. Chain O'Lakes State Park has Class A-Premium areas (Honey Suckle Hollow and Fox Den) with 151 sites in total, plus three Class B-Premium camp areas (Turner Lake South, Prairie View, and Mud Lake East) with a combined 87 sites. Class B sites are more rustic and better suited to smaller rigs and tents than to large motorhomes needing full hookups.
Private resorts offer more amenities. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort includes a heated outdoor pool, hot tub, dog park, indoor pickleball court, basketball courts, a softball field, playgrounds, and a full activity calendar, with full-hookup RV sites, long-term sites, cabins, and lakefront tent sites.
Expect crowds on summer holiday weekends and quieter mid-week stays. Only trolling or electric motors may be operated on the lakes at Chain O'Lakes State Park; gasoline motors may remain on board but not be operated.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Round Lake Beach, IL
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Round Lake Beach, IL?
Good news, an RV rental in Round Lake Beach is one of the most affordable ways to enjoy the Chain O'Lakes region. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, while Class C motorhomes range from about $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A coaches run $250 to $400 per night. You can lower your total by booking midweek, traveling in May or September when demand around the Chain O'Lakes dips, and filtering for cheap RV rental Round Lake Beach options with included generator hours. Pro tip: many Lake County hosts bundle camp chairs, linens, and kitchen kits for free, which can save you $75 to $150 versus packing from scratch.
visitlakecounty.org/ChainOLakesStateParkWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Round Lake Beach, Illinois?
Great news for first-time renters: for the vast majority of RVs on RVezy, a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Round Lake Beach. Illinois only requires an upgraded non-Commercial Driver's License (non-CDL) for motorhomes over 16,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), and almost every campervan, travel trailer, and Class C motorhome on the platform falls well under that. RVezy approved drivers must generally be 25 or older with a valid license, and identification is verified through the booking process so there is no extra paperwork on pickup day. Visiting from abroad? Pair your home license with an International Driving Permit and you are set for your Illinois RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I book an RV rental in Round Lake Beach?
You can book with confidence: every RV rental in Round Lake Beach booked through RVezy includes a protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered from the moment you leave the driveway. The protection plan helps cover physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level at checkout, not the host. While it is not a traditional auto insurance policy, it provides real financial peace of mind whether you are heading 20 minutes to Chain O'Lakes State Park or up to Wisconsin's Kettle Moraine. Pro tip: review each coverage tier during checkout and pick the one that best matches how far and how often you plan to drive.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Round Lake Beach RV trip plans change?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets its own cancellation policy that applies to every reservation, including a money-back grace period right after you book. Depending on how far out from your trip you cancel, you may be eligible for a partial or full refund. Hosts do not set cancellation terms, RVezy does, so the rules are consistent across every listing in Lake County. If a host cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit so you are not left without options. Pro tip: if severe Illinois weather or a Chain O'Lakes flood warning pops up close to your dates, contact RVezy support right away so they can walk you through your options.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Round Lake Beach?

Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you will see rigs where pets are welcome, sometimes with a small cleaning fee disclosed on the listing. Once you are out exploring, Lake County is a tail-wagging paradise: Lakefront Park in Round Lake Beach has open green space along the lake, the Lake County Forest Preserves manage over 31,000 acres of leashed-pet trails, and Chain O'Lakes State Park welcomes leashed dogs throughout its campgrounds (though not in the cabins). Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm breed or size details so check-in is smooth.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.chainolakes.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Round Lake Beach?
Yes, RV delivery Round Lake Beach is one of the most popular options on the platform, especially for first-timers who would rather skip driving a big rig through traffic on Rollins Road or Route 120. Many local hosts will deliver, level, and set up your motorhome or travel trailer directly at Chain O'Lakes State Park, Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in nearby Volo, or even your own driveway, then walk you through every system before they leave. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see exactly which hosts offer it and how far they travel, with most quoting a per-mile delivery fee. Pro tip: book delivery to your campground and use your tow vehicle or car for grocery runs and day trips.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.chainolakes.htmlHow far can I drive on a Round Lake Beach RV trip, and what are mileage policies like?

From Round Lake Beach you can comfortably reach Lake Geneva, Wisconsin in about 40 minutes (30 miles), Milwaukee in 90 minutes (75 miles), Starved Rock State Park in about 2 hours (95 miles), Indiana Dunes National Park in 2 hours (90 miles), and downtown Chicago in roughly an hour without traffic (50 miles). Each listing shows its mileage policy clearly on the booking page. Pro tip: estimate your route mileage before booking so you can pick the host whose policy fits your plan.

Grass Lake Marina and RV Park in Antioch puts you right on the Chain O'Lakes waterway, and Illinois Beach State Park in Zion (about 25 miles east) sits on Lake Michigan with 240+ shaded sites. Pro tip: state park reservations open through ExploreMoreIL, so book the moment your dates lock in.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/camp/park.chainolakes.htmlWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Round Lake Beach?
Late May through early October is prime time for RV camping Round Lake Beach, with average highs climbing from 65°F in May to around 80°F in July before easing to the mid-70s in September. June and early September are the sweet spot, warm days, cool nights in the upper 50s, and fewer mosquitoes around the Chain O'Lakes wetlands. Fall foliage in the oak and hickory forests at Chain O'Lakes State Park peaks in mid-October. Winters are genuinely cold, with January lows averaging around 16°F and regular snow, so most area campgrounds (including Fish Lake Beach) close from mid-October through April. Pro tip: aim for the week after Labor Day for empty campgrounds, warm lake water, and the cheapest RV rates of the season.
weather.gov/lot/What if it is my first time renting an RV in Round Lake Beach?
You are in great hands, first time renting an RV is something every RVezy host is used to handling. Your host will provide a hands-on orientation at pickup (usually 30 to 60 minutes) covering how to operate the generator, slide-outs, leveling, propane, awning, and waste tanks, and you can message them anytime during your trip with questions. Many Lake County hosts even include a printed cheat sheet in the RV. For driving practice, the wide, flat roads around Rollins Road, Route 83, and the Tri-State Tollway (I-94) are very motorhome-friendly compared to downtown Chicago. Pro tip: pick a smaller Class C or travel trailer for your first Round Lake Beach RV trip, you will park easier at Chain O'Lakes campsites and feel confident from minute one.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.chainolakes.htmlWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are never stranded: every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan. If you get a flat on I-94, run into a battery issue at Chain O'Lakes State Park, or have a propane question at 11 p.m., you can call the roadside line for help with towing, jump-starts, tire changes, lockouts, and fuel delivery. For anything mechanical or appliance-related, message your host directly through the RVezy app: most are local to Lake County and can troubleshoot quickly or arrange a fix. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before you leave the driveway so it is one tap away.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my RV rental across state lines or to Canada from Round Lake Beach?
Yes, cross-state road trips are very common, and many hosts welcome them since the Illinois-Wisconsin border is only about 12 miles north of Round Lake Beach. Popular routes for an RV road trip from Round Lake Beach include Wisconsin Dells (about 2.5 hours), Door County (4 hours), Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and the Indiana Dunes. Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host's insurance, so message them before booking with your route, while travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental due to insurance limitations. Pro tip: if you are eyeing a Lake Geneva or Kettle Moraine weekend, ask the host upfront and you will usually get a quick yes, those are weekly trips for many Lake County travelers.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel economy should I expect, and how do I budget for gas?
Budgeting is straightforward once you know the numbers. Class C motorhomes around Round Lake Beach typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG) on gasoline, Class A coaches average 7 to 10 MPG, campervans hit 16 to 20 MPG, and if you tow a travel trailer with your own SUV expect a 25 to 35 percent drop from your normal MPG. Lake County gas prices generally run a few cents above the Illinois state average, with several Speedway, Shell, and BP stations along Route 120 and Rollins Road that can fit larger rigs. For a 4-night Chain O'Lakes trip covering about 200 miles, plan on roughly $80 to $120 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fuel up just over the Wisconsin border in Pleasant Prairie where gas is typically 30 to 50 cents per gallon cheaper.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Round Lake Beach?
Book early and you will lock in the best sites. Chain O'Lakes State Park accepts reservations up to six months in advance through the ExploreMoreIL system (or by calling 866-716-6550), and the Honeysuckle Hollow and Fox Den electric loops fill quickly for summer weekends, especially Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day. Private parks like Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in Volo open reservations even earlier for the May 1 to October 15 season. For a smooth motorhome rental Round Lake Beach experience, aim to reserve campsites 3 to 6 months ahead for peak summer and 2 to 4 weeks ahead for May and September. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for the exact day the booking window opens, prime lakefront sites can be gone within hours.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/camp/park.chainolakes.htmlWhat are local driving conditions like around Round Lake Beach?
Driving here is friendlier than most Chicago-area destinations, the roads around Round Lake Beach are mostly flat, well-paved suburban routes with wide lanes. Route 120, Rollins Road, and Route 83 are the main arteries and easily handle motorhomes up to 35 feet. The Tri-State Tollway (I-94) and I-294 give you fast access to Wisconsin and O'Hare, just note that Illinois tolls are now collected electronically via I-PASS or pay-by-plate, and Illinois interstate speed limits cap at 70 mph. Watch out for low-clearance railroad underpasses in Mundelein and Libertyville (some are under 11 feet), and downtown Chicago is best avoided in a big rig. Pro tip: download the Illinois Tollway app before your trip so toll charges do not surprise you a week later.
illinoistollway.com/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Round Lake Beach?
You will find solid amenities at most local parks. Chain O'Lakes State Park's Honeysuckle Hollow and Fox Den loops offer electric hookups (no water or sewer at the site), shared water spigots, modern shower/flush-toilet buildings, a dump station near the park entrance, and a seasonal concession stand with firewood and ice from April through mid-October. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in Volo provides full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, a swimming beach, pool, and laundry. For dumping and freshwater fills between trips, Grass Lake Marina and Fish Lake Beach both offer dump stations to non-guests for a small fee. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot freshwater hose and a 30-amp-to-15-amp adapter, the Chain O'Lakes electric pedestals are 30-amp standard.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/camp/park.chainolakes.htmlWhat features and amenities come inside the RV itself?
You will feel right at home. Most RVs on RVezy in the Round Lake Beach area come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, additional bunk or convertible sleeping areas, a kitchen with fridge/freezer, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, furnace, and a TV. Many also include a generator for off-grid power, exterior speakers, an awning, and outdoor camp chairs. Each listing details the exact bed configuration, sleeps count, seatbelts, and whether Wi-Fi or a backup camera is included. Pro tip: use the Sleeps filter and the amenity checkboxes on RVezy to match the RV to your group, a family of five usually wants a Class C with a bunk bed plus a convertible dinette.
fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/title49/section/393.93What add-ons and pickup options should I know about for my rental?
Hosts make it easy to customize your trip. Common add-ons on RVezy listings near Round Lake Beach include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, generator-hour bundles, bike racks, kayaks, portable grills, fire pits, and pet cleaning fees. Pickup is typically a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough at the host's location in Round Lake Beach, Grayslake, Mundelein, or Antioch, and most hosts offer Instant Book so you can confirm without waiting. Mileage policies and generator-hour allowances are spelled out on each listing, with overage rates clearly stated. Pro tip: ask your host if they include a Fox Waterway Agency boat sticker map and Chain O'Lakes fishing guide, locals often toss them in for free.
foxwaterway.org/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and fully handled through the RVezy platform, you never pay the host directly in cash. Your rental total, taxes, protection plan, and any add-ons are charged to your card at booking, which protects both you and the owner. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before pickup (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) and released after the trip once the host confirms the rig was returned in the same condition. To avoid deposit issues, do a quick walkaround video with the host at pickup and dropoff, return the RV with the agreed fuel and propane levels, and empty the tanks if your contract requires it. Pro tip: keep all communication inside the RVezy app, it gives you a written record if any question comes up later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park or stay overnight in an RV around Round Lake Beach?
You have plenty of legal, comfortable options for where to park an RV in Round Lake Beach. Overnight RV parking on Round Lake Beach village streets is restricted by local ordinance, so plan to stay at a designated campground instead, the closest are Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in Volo (about 4 miles), Chain O'Lakes State Park in Spring Grove (12 miles), and Grass Lake Marina and RV Park in Antioch (8 miles). Illinois rest areas along I-94 allow short rest stops but not overnight camping. Many Walmart and Cracker Barrel locations in nearby Gurnee permit one-night stays with manager approval. Pro tip: for a family RV trip Round Lake Beach with kids, Fish Lake Beach is the easiest win, full hookups, a sandy swim beach, and mini-golf right on site.
