Campgrounds and RV parks near Round Lake Park, IL

Boating and fishing dominate the local calendar. The Chain O' Lakes and the Fox River have no horsepower limitation on the chain itself, making the area a hub for pontoons, ski boats, and fishing craft, though a Fox Waterway Agency user sticker is required. Campers at Grass Lake Marina and RV Park and Fox River Recreation can launch directly, and Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort offers boating on its private 80-acre lake. On shore, Chain O' Lakes State Park offers hiking and biking trails, a seasonal concession stand, and boat and canoe rentals from the park concessionaire. Families often pair a camping trip with visits to Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, the Volo Auto Museum, and the Lake County Forest Preserves.

The camping season in this part of northern Illinois runs roughly from mid-April through mid-October, matching the operating windows of most private parks in the area. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort, for example, offers overnight camping from May 1 through October 15, with seasonal sites available starting April 15. Chain O' Lakes State Park keeps campgrounds open on a similar warm-season schedule. June, July, and August are the busiest months. Weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day book out earliest, and reserving eight weeks or more in advance is common for summer Saturdays. The Chain O' Lakes waterway is one of the busiest inland recreational waterways per acre in the country, so expect crowded lakes on holiday weekends. Late spring and early fall bring cooler nights, thinner crowds, and easier reservations. Winters are cold and snowy, and most private campgrounds close entirely; RV travelers passing through in the off-season should confirm operating status before arriving.

Expect a mix of resort-style and rustic experiences within a small radius. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort leans family-resort, with a heated pool, hot tub, sandy beach, playgrounds, indoor pickleball court, and organized weekend activities. Grass Lake Marina and RV Park and Fox River Recreation are geared toward boaters, with slips or launches close to the sites. At Chain O' Lakes State Park, Turner Lake South offers Class B-Premium primitive sites, while Honeysuckle Hollow and Fox Den provide Class A-Premium sites with electric hookups. Restrooms and showers are available in the main loops, and campers must bring their own firewood since gathering wood in the park is strictly prohibited. Alcohol is also prohibited in the state park campgrounds. Full-service groceries are a short drive away in Round Lake, Antioch, and Fox Lake.
