Campgrounds near Savoy, Illinois
Savoy sits at the southern edge of the Champaign-Urbana metro area in east-central Illinois, close to Interstate 57, Interstate 74, and University of Illinois Willard Airport. The location works well as a base for Illini game weekends, university events, and short trips into the surrounding prairie and river country.
The closest full-service RV options are on the north side of Champaign. D and W Lake Camping and RV Park offers full-hookup RV sites with 30-amp and 50-amp service, water and sewer, pull-through options, laundry, showers, an RV dump station, and on-site storage. Tin Cup RV Park is the other close-in private option. Both put travelers within a short drive of campus, restaurants, and grocery resupply.
For state-park camping, the nearest reservable option is Gray Squirrel loop at Walnut Point State Park, managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, with Class A electric-hookup sites, Class C walk-in tent sites, a group camping area, shower buildings with flush toilets, drinking water, and a sanitary dump station. South Park Municipal Campground and the equestrian campground at Middle Fork State Fish and Wildlife Area round out the nearby list for travelers wanting rustic or horse-friendly options.
Things to do near Savoy
The University of Illinois campus in Urbana-Champaign anchors the area with museums, Memorial Stadium, State Farm Center events, and the Japan House gardens. Curtis Orchard, Allerton Park in Monticello, and the Champaign County Forest Preserves add family-friendly day trips within easy RV range.
Outdoor activity clusters east of the city. Walnut Point Lake is a 59-acre, multi-fingered, stream-fed lake formed by an earthen dam, with a maximum average depth of 12.5 feet and 6.3 miles of shoreline. Fishing targets include largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, and crappie. Boat motors are limited to electric trolling motors, and swimming is not permitted.
Hiking around the lake is compact but pleasant: 2.25 miles of trails wind through the timber, and using the main park road with the Gray Squirrel to Twin Points connection creates a 3-mile exercise loop. The Middle Fork State Fish and Wildlife Area adds equestrian and cross-country trails plus paddling access to the Middle Fork River, a designated State and National Scenic River.

The central Illinois climate drives a clear camping season. Champaign experiences a humid continental climate marked by very large seasonal temperature contrasts. Summers are warm and bring the most precipitation, contributing to the area being fairly wet overall. Winters are cold, with temperatures often dropping significantly. Precipitation is spread relatively evenly throughout the year.
State-park camping tracks the warm months. At Walnut Point State Park the shower buildings are closed by November 1st, may be earlier if bad weather, and reopen May 1st, may be earlier weather depending. A concession is operated from April through October, and during cold weather, camp facilities are subject to closure.
Fall brings foliage and calmer campgrounds, while winter recreation at nearby state sites shifts to trails and ice fishing where conditions allow. Football Saturdays and campus move-in and graduation weekends drive very heavy demand at private parks in Champaign, so book those dates far in advance.

How to book campgrounds near Savoy
Reservation systems split by ownership. At Walnut Point State Park, all Class A and C campsites are available for reservation, reservations can be made through the ExploreMoreIL website, and the park office can confirm current details. The group camping area and two large picnic shelters are also reservable.
Middle Fork State Fish and Wildlife Area operates differently. The equestrian campground there is primitive, without hookups or showers, and sites are handled first-come, first-served during the open season.
Private parks book direct. D and W Lake Camping and RV Park accepts reservations by phone or through its own website, and Tin Cup RV Park handles bookings directly with the operator. South Park Municipal Campground is run by the local municipality, so contact the park office ahead of arrival to confirm site availability and any seasonal restrictions.
What to expect
Terrain around Savoy is flat to gently rolling farmland with pockets of hardwood forest and small lakes. Ash, oak, hickory, maple, walnut, locust and sassafras trees dominate the wooded acres at Walnut Point, and the park is home to a prairie restoration plot and a 65-acre nature preserve, Upper Embarras Woods. Sites at private parks tend to be level and easy to access from the interstate.
Hookups and services vary by property. Full-service sites with 30 and 50-amp power, water, and sewer are typical at Champaign private parks, while state and municipal grounds lean toward electric-only or primitive. At Walnut Point, electric-only hookups are available with no full hookups, and equestrian sites at Middle Fork have no hookups or showers.
Bring an Illinois fishing license if the trip includes lake or river time, expect leashed pets to be welcome at most sites, and plan for mosquitoes near water in summer. Cell coverage is generally reliable across the Champaign-Urbana area.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Savoy, IL
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Savoy, IL?
RV rental in Savoy is affordable compared to many U.S. markets, with most travel trailers listed around $95 to $150 per night and Class C motorhomes typically $175 to $275 per night on RVezy. Because Savoy sits next to Champaign-Urbana and the University of Illinois, pricing stays competitive year-round, with the best deals usually appearing in late fall and early spring. To save more, look for hosts offering weekly discounts or bundled kitchen and linen kits. Booking a mid-week pickup (Tuesday or Wednesday) often unlocks lower nightly rates than weekend starts, and a cheap RV rental Savoy travelers love is usually a smaller travel trailer paired with a host who delivers.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Savoy,%20IllinoisDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Savoy, IL?
A regular Illinois Class D driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Savoy, whether it's a campervan, travel trailer, or Class C motorhome. There is no Commercial Driver's License (CDL) requirement for personal-use RVs under 26,000 lbs in Illinois, which covers virtually every rig on RVezy. RVezy approved renters generally must be 25 or older, and ID verification is handled inside the RVezy platform when you reserve. Visiting from overseas? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto club along with your home license. Most first-time renters in Champaign County find the paperwork straightforward.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection and roadside coverage is included with my Savoy RV rental?
Every RV rental in Savoy booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head out on I-57 or I-74 with real peace of mind. You choose your protection level at checkout (not the host), so you can match coverage to your budget and trip style. Each plan provides meaningful financial protection for covered damage during your trip. Roadside assistance helps with flat tires, jump starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing, which is especially reassuring on rural stretches of Central Illinois farmland.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my RV rental in Savoy?
Booking your Savoy RV trip is low risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and it includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you have breathing room to finalize plans. Refund eligibility after that depends on how far out you are from your trip start date and whether unusual events such as severe Midwest weather affect your plans. You can review the full cancellation policy on the RVezy Help Center before confirming your reservation. Lock in your dates early to secure the rig you want, then finalize campground bookings once your reservation is confirmed.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Savoy, IL?
Yes, pet-friendly RV rental Savoy options are easy to find on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on the search page to see rigs from local hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Savoy and neighboring Champaign-Urbana are very dog-friendly, with the Dog Park at Prairie Fields in Savoy and the leash-friendly trails at Meadowbrook Park in Urbana all within a short drive. Many area campgrounds, including Kickapoo State Recreation Area, also allow leashed pets. Message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and any size or breed limits.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.kickapoo.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campground or home in Savoy?
Yes, RV delivery is one of the most popular options for first-time renters in Savoy, and many local hosts offer it. They will drive the rig to your driveway, a nearby campground, or directly to Kickapoo State Recreation Area, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Delivery fees typically range from $2 to $4 per mile round-trip, and some hosts include free delivery within a set radius of Savoy. It is a great choice if you are nervous about towing or maneuvering a larger motorhome. Use the Delivery filter when you search to see your options.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Savoy,%20IllinoisHow far can I drive on an RV rental from Savoy, IL?
You can go as far as your itinerary calls for. Many hosts in Savoy offer generous daily mileage allowances (often 100 to 150 free miles per day), and some list RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for a longer Savoy RV trip. Popular drives from Savoy include Starved Rock State Park (about 2.5 hours northwest), Indianapolis (about 2 hours east on I-74), Chicago (about 2.5 hours north on I-57), St. Louis (about 3 hours southwest), and Shawnee National Forest (about 4 hours south). If you are planning a longer loop, message the host upfront, mileage add-on packages are usually cheaper when bundled into the booking.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.starvedrock.htmlWhere are the best campgrounds near Savoy, IL?
You have great options for RV camping near Savoy. Top picks within about an hour include Kickapoo State Recreation Area in Oakwood (electric sites near scenic reclaimed lakes), Middle Fork River Forest Preserve in Penfield (a certified International Dark Sky Park, great for stargazing), Camp-Land RV Park in Mahomet (full hookups, family-friendly), and Lake of the Woods County Park in Mahomet (electric sites, gorgeous in fall). For full-hookup pull-through sites, Camp-Land is the easiest bet for first-timers. Kickapoo and Middle Fork book quickly on summer weekends, so reserve through the Illinois DNR system as soon as your RVezy booking is confirmed.
camp.exploremoreil.com/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Savoy, IL?
Late April through mid-October is prime time for an RV trip from Savoy, with the sweet spots being May (wildflowers, highs around 65 to 75 F), September (lower humidity, highs around 70 to 80 F), and early October (peak fall foliage at Allerton Park and Lake of the Woods). July and August are warm and humid with highs in the mid 80s to low 90s, great for lake camping at Kickapoo. Central Illinois winters can dip well below freezing with occasional snow and ice, so many hosts pause bookings from late November through March, though some offer winterized rigs for shoulder-season getaways. Plan around University of Illinois home football weekends to avoid the local lodging crunch.
weather.gov/ilx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one around Savoy?
You will do great, and Savoy is one of the easiest places in the Midwest to learn. The terrain is famously flat, roads like US-45 and I-57 are wide and well-maintained, and traffic is light compared to Chicago or St. Louis. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, propane, water, and waste, so you will not be left guessing. If a first time renting an RV still feels intimidating, choose a smaller Class C motorhome or a campervan rental Savoy hosts offer, or book delivery so you skip the driving entirely. Take a short practice loop through the quiet streets near Prairie Fields before heading out on the highway.
idot.illinois.gov/What if something goes wrong on the road during my Savoy RV trip?
You are never on your own. Every motorhome rental Savoy booking through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance with the protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. If something more complicated comes up, RVezy's support team is reachable around the clock to coordinate with you and your host. Central Illinois is well-served by service centers in Champaign, Urbana, and Rantoul, and major routes like I-57, I-74, and I-72 have frequent exits with gas stations and truck stops. Save the roadside assistance number in your phone before you leave, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate just in case.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Savoy RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcomed on most RVezy bookings, which makes an RV road trip from Savoy genuinely exciting. Popular cross-state runs include Indiana Dunes National Park (about 3 hours northeast), the Missouri Ozarks (about 5 hours southwest), Mammoth Cave in Kentucky (about 5.5 hours south), and Great Smoky Mountains National Park (about 8 to 9 hours southeast). Canada travel may be allowed depending on the host and their insurance, so message them directly before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage does not extend there. A 7-day loop from Savoy to Indiana Dunes and back through Starved Rock is a classic Midwest first-timer trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Savoy RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item after the rental itself, but it is manageable in Central Illinois. Expect roughly 8 to 10 MPG for a Class C motorhome, 12 to 15 MPG for a truck towing a travel trailer, and 18 to 22 MPG for a Class B campervan. Gas prices around Savoy and Champaign typically run a bit below the Chicago metro average. For a 300-mile weekend loop in a Class C, plan on roughly $120 to $170 in fuel depending on current pump prices. Fill up at the Pilot or Love's just off I-57 before heading out, then top off in smaller towns where prices are often even lower.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Savoy?
For the best sites at Illinois state park campgrounds like Kickapoo State Recreation Area and Moraine View State Park, aim to book 3 to 6 months ahead through the Illinois DNR reservation system, especially for summer weekends and holidays. Private parks like Camp-Land RV Park in Mahomet usually have more last-minute availability, often 2 to 4 weeks out. County campgrounds at Lake of the Woods and Middle Fork book through the Champaign County Forest Preserve District and typically open reservations several months in advance. If you strike out on a Saturday night, try Thursday or Sunday arrivals, midweek availability is excellent at nearly every campground near Savoy.
camp.exploremoreil.com/What are driving conditions like around Savoy, IL?
Driving an RV around Savoy is about as easy as it gets in the Midwest. The land is famously flat, roads are straight, and you will rarely encounter the steep grades or tight switchbacks that intimidate new drivers. I-57, I-74, and I-72 all meet near Champaign, giving you smooth interstate access in every direction. Watch for spring thunderstorms (April through June) that can bring brief but intense crosswinds across open farmland, and winter ice storms from December through February if you travel in shoulder season. University of Illinois game days in the fall can congest Neil Street and Kirby Avenue, so plan pickups and drop-offs outside those windows. Avoid low-clearance railroad underpasses in downtown Champaign by sticking to Marketview Drive or Curtis Road.
gettingaroundillinois.com/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Savoy?
Most campgrounds near Savoy offer solid amenities for a comfortable stay. Kickapoo State Recreation Area has electric hookups, modern restrooms, showers, and a dump station. Camp-Land RV Park in Mahomet offers full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, and a pool. Lake of the Woods County Park has electric sites and potable water fill stations, with a dump station available seasonally. For fresh water and dump stops between trips, several Pilot and Love's truck stops along I-57 work in a pinch. Bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 30-amp to 50-amp adapter, you will be ready for virtually any site within an hour of Savoy.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.kickapoo.htmlWhat features and amenities come inside a typical Savoy RV rental?
Most RVs on RVezy in Savoy come fully equipped and trip-ready. Expect comfortable sleeping for 4 to 8 people, a working kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a private bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with both air conditioning and furnace heat, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many rigs also include a flat-screen TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and an onboard generator for off-grid power. Wi-Fi is sometimes included, and cell signal on major carriers is strong across Champaign County so a hotspot works well. Filter listings by sleeps count and amenities to match your group, and message the host to confirm whether linens, towels, and a starter propane tank are included.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Savoy,%20IllinoisWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for a Savoy RV rental?
Hosts in Savoy offer a strong mix of add-ons to customize your trip. Common extras include kitchen and linen kits ($30 to $75), bike racks, camp chairs and tables, generators with bonus hours, portable grills, Starlink Wi-Fi, and child car-seat anchors. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Savoy, Champaign, or Urbana, often within 10 minutes of I-57, and many hosts offer RV delivery Savoy travelers love straight to your campground. Mileage policies vary by listing, with typical free allowances of 100 to 150 miles per day and overage fees around $0.35 per mile. Bundle delivery, dump-station service, and a linen kit upfront, you will often save versus adding them a la carte after booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Savoy,%20IllinoisHow do payments and security deposits work when I rent an RV in Savoy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy's platform with a credit or debit card at the time of booking, never directly to the host, so your money is protected. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) is placed as a hold on your card a few days before pickup and released after a clean return, separate from the booking payment. To avoid any deposit issues, do a thorough walkaround with your host at both pickup and drop-off, take date-stamped photos and videos, and return the RV with fuel and waste tanks as agreed. Keep all receipts from your family RV trip Savoy adventure (gas, propane, dump fees) in case any reimbursements come up.
